Easter Island, or Rapa Nui as it is known locally, is one of the most remote places on Earth. All the statues, or moas, were mysteriously toppled. They once stood on stone platforms known as ahus. Recently, many have been returned to stand upon their pedestals. The moa in the picture is the solitary statue Ahu Ko Te Riku wearing the typical red topknot; its white alabaster eyes staring out over the barren, rocky landscape. As the giant sentinel keeps watch over his ancestral home, tourists gaze with wonder and ask who and why. Unrelenting, the statue guards the secrets of Easter Island with stoic dignity. - Julie Neukomm.
