| Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) share over 98 percent of their DNA with humans - in fact, they're more closely related to humans than they are to Gorillas. In the wild, chimps can still be found in the most densly forested and uninhabited regions of central and western Africa. However, habitat destruction and poaching are gravely threatening remaining populations. Researchers believe that only 150,000 to 200,000 chimps survive in the wild. Although they sleep in make-shift nests in trees, Chimpanzees spend roughly 60% of their time on the ground. Chimps live in loosely organized communities that vary in size depending on food availability. Chimpanzees are omnivores, eating fruits, small mammals and insects. |
