Members of a Meerkat (Suricata suricata) colony stand tall while scanning the plains for predators. At the slightest threat of danger a Sentry will bark out a warning to protect family members eating, playing or resting nearby. Meerkats are social animals, with up to 20 individuals living in an underground maze of tunnels and dens. Despite their small size, Meerkats are extremely agile and can kill venomous snakes such as cobra several times their weight. Meerkats are omnivorous, eating insects, lizards, small rodents and even scorpions.
