Jupiter and its four planet-size moons, called the Galilean satellites as photographed in early March, 1979 by the Voyager 1 spacecraft. Though the collage of images is not to scale, the satellites are in their relative positions. Reddish Io (upper left) is nearest Jupiter; then Europa (center); Ganymede and Callisto (lower right). Nine other much smaller satellites circle Jupiter, one inside Io's orbit and the others millions of miles from the planet. Not visible in the picture are Jupiter's faint ring of particles, which were discovered by the Voyager 1 mission. Photo used with permission from NASA.
