|This illustration shows part of the beautiful "circle of life" that we celebrate on Earth Day -- and every day. Biological diversity is the variety of all the different and unique forms of life on the planet and how they interact in communities. Many scientists consider the loss of biological diversity as the leading environmental threat. A conservative estimate is that between 5 and 20 percent of some species of animals and plants will become extinct in the foreseeable future--jeopardizing valuable sources of food and medicine and basic ecosystem services such as natural cleansing of our air and water. So at Defenders of Wildlife, the need to "Save Something Wild" has taken on new urgency. In addition to leading efforts to protect the Endangered Species Act, Defenders has a number of other programs to protect both species and the ecosystems in which they interact.|
