The controversial image is of a region on Mars known as "Cydonia Mensae." The photograph was taken by the Viking 2 orbiter. When the image is rotated clockwise 90 degrees so that north is toward the upper left corner (as seen in this photo), it has a striking resemblance to a "face." At the time of this posting, we have no evidence that any Martian has sent an E-Card, so we suspect that this geologic structure is a fortuitous result of natural causes.
