A computer enhanced image of the Great Red Spot (GRS) on Jupiter. The GRS is a large vortex or cyclone in Jupiter's upper atmosphere. The storm measures 14,000 km N/S by 40,000 km E/W with wind speeds of up to 360 km/hr. The red color may come from condensation of phosphorus at the cloud tops, or organic molecules synthesized by lighting discharges deep in Jupiter's atmosphere. The giant storm has existed since the first telescopes observed the planet in the early 1600s. Photo used with permission from NASA.
