Fisherman off Mangsit beach on the island of Lombok. View is toward the volcano Gunung Agung (lit. "Most Important Mountain") on the island of Bali. The Balinese fear the mountain's violent eruptions yet depend on the ash to enrich the soils for rice farming. To promote rice production and placate the volcanoes the mostly Hindu population pays homage three times a day to island spirits - offering rice, flower petals and incense.

The islands of Lombok and Bali are only two of more than 13,000 islands that form the Indonesian archipelago. Today, despite its growing international popularity, much of Lombok remains as peaceful and pristine as it was hundreds of years ago. .
