Horseshoe Canyon, 1985. Canyonlands National Park, Utah.
A long hike from the car through Horseshoe Canyon rewarded me with two photographs that I am quite happy with. I noticed how the majestic, ruggedly textured cliff dwarfed the delicately lit cottonwood tree at itís base, creating an ironic comparison of textures. I developed this negative less-than normal in order to reduce the over-all contrast of the scene, while giving the shadowed cliff ample exposure. To me, this is an image of multiple contrasts: Size, scale, texture, and luminance. Thanks to my assistant, who helped carry my gear, the hike was well worth it!
