Sunrise, Angel Arch. 1985. Canyonlands National Park, Utah.
We spent the evening in a back country camp near the end of a 15 mile jeep road in Utah’s Canyonlands National Park the night before I shot this photograph. This negative was actually a re-shoot of a 1975 negative of the same subject which was severely flawed. About a half hour after sunrise, at the end of a twisting and narrow 4WD spur road, a short hike leads to the base of Angel Arch. I waited till the shadow at the base of the arch formed a sharp edge, creating a sort of "theatrical" base. This sharp shadowed edge lasted only about a minute, barely giving me time to make one or two exposures on 4x5 film.
