Black Cross, 1980. Los Trampas, New Mexico.
This aging and crumbling church in the small Indian town of Los Trampas, New Mexico had been the subject of many photographers over the years. The actual 4x5 negative of this image was cropped considerably in order to achieve this composition. I felt that the image looked almost "theatrical" in itís organization of elements, and wanted to stress the intensity of the shadowed cross against the adobe textured wall behind it. A special mask was used to deepen the black of the cross in order to maximize the effect. Substantial burning as well as other manipulations are required to produce a successful print. Although I am rarely completely happy with my images, this is probably one of my favorites.
