|The "layers" in this pastel painting of the Utah
desert refer to both the colorful sedimentary rock and the layers of pigment I
applied to the paper. It was fun to scrawl a brilliant underpainting
across the surface and let it peek through in places, as I thought
of the way erosion lets the geologic history emerge. This
vacation took us to some amazing National Parks, including Capitol Reef, Arches,
Zion, and Mesa Verde.|
