Hunted to near extinction, the black rhinoceros was once commonly found in the savannahs of sub-Saharan Africa. Rhinos have poor vision and are much more dependent on their keen sense of smell. Due largely to the demand for rhino horn, used for medicinal purposes in some Asian countries, the black rhino's survival is threatened by poachers.
