Best known for their haunting cry, loons are goose-sized water birds. The striking breeding plumage found on both the males and females consists of a black and white necklace and prominent white spots on the back. Expert divers, loons can remain under water for as long as two or three minutes. Their main food source is fish but they will also eat shellfish, frogs and aquatic insects. Young loons are often seen riding on the backs of their parents.
