| The North American Green Frog (Rana clamitans melanota) is found throughout the eastern USA and southeastern Canada. Green frogs make a sound like plucking a banjo string during the April to August breeding season. These frogs lay 1000 to 4000 eggs in a gelatinous mass in small ponds and marshes. Young frogs, known as "tadpoles", hatch from the eggs within a week. Tadpoles are legless with a broad tail and look almost nothing like a frog. During the next year, the tadpoles grow legs and lose their tail, little by little looking like adult frogs. Although tadpoles have gills and adult frogs have lungs they both also breath through their moist skin. |
