The Blue and Gold Macaw (Ara ararauna) is a beautiful, loud and large (34 inches / .86 meters tall) member of the parrot family. Macaws are social birds, living in flocks of up to 20 individuals, and pairs mate for life. Their current range is restricted to the deep forests of Central and South America. Habitat destruction is threatening all Macaws, and the Blue and Gold is the only species not on the Endangered Species list. Macaws live up to 50 years in the wild and over 70 years in captivity.
