Update: Almonds No Longer Raw; all to be pasteurized April 10, 2007 6:32 AM

MANDATORY ALMOND PASTEURIZATION
All Almonds will be Pasteurized starting in 2007.

And the pasteurized almonds will be labelled as raw!!
A big lie and fraud!! You are about to be denied your freedom to choose!

Starting in the fall of 2007, truly raw almonds will not be available in the USA or Canada. See link below for the pasteurization plan.
http://www.almondboard.com/Programs/content.cfm?ItemNumber=890&snItemNumber=450>

The FDA, USDA and the California Almond Board have developed a
marketing order which mandates that all almonds must be pasteurized. This came about because of "two outbreaks of salmonella associated with conventional farms several years ago". Industry has now overreacted in grand fashion. To date, we are aware of no outbreaks associated with raw organic almonds.

This has everything to do with lack of biodiversity and the sterile farming methods used on conventional farms. On these farms few weeds or grasses grow on the floors and little sunlight reaches the floors. To the contrary, Organic farms support and encourage biodiversity with green floors in the orchards and this discourages
pathogen growth. Unfortunately, organic almonds are shelled and bagged on the same production facilities as conventional and are being subjected to the same rules.

There is an even bigger issue. The FDA has decided not to tell the consumer the truth about this processing step. The almonds you will buy in Whole Foods this fall may still say "raw almonds" but they will have been subjected to "high heat and a five log kill step"...that they are calling "pasteurization". This lie is being permitted by the marketing order!!

The FDA in association with the USDA and the Almond Board is in fact denying you the information required to make informed choices when you buy food. You will not be able to identify a pasteurized almond from a truly raw, whole, enzyme rich, unprocessed almond.

The almond board claims that the almonds will still sprout (still some life in them ) and that the flavor does not change. But no research has been performed to see what kind of opportunistic bacteria will take over when the almond has been sterilized. It is not a whole natural food anymore. It will now be a processed food.
Millions of dollars are being invested to install expensive pasteurization machines in all almond plants in order to follow this "sterile foods are better foods" edict.

Below are the people to contact. Please fax, call or email them with the following demands that can be copied and pasted for your convenience.

Subject: Pasteurization of Almonds

1. As an advocate of consumer rights and of raw, whole, enzyme rich and
unprocessed foods, I strongly object to the order that mandates the pasteurization of almonds.

2. I further object to the labelling of pasteurized almonds as raw.

3. I demand a second consumer choice of truly raw almonds that are labelled as such.

4. The proposed marketing order denies consumers the freedom to identify and choose whole and unprocessed foods and is entirely unacceptable.

Good article:

Food Scam! The California Almond Board to Falsely Label Pasteurized Almonds as "Raw"

A quote from it:

"Raw foods are widely understood by virtually the entire food community to mean food items kept below 108 degrees (F), beyond which the living enzymes in foods are destroyed.

Pasteurization, in contrast, exposes foods to temperatures of up to 158 degrees for durations up to 30 minutes. (Faster "flash" pasteurization can involve much higher temperatures for shorter durations: 280 degrees (F) for two seconds, for example.) We do not know the precise temperature that will be used for pasteurizing almonds, but it will without question be a temperature higher than 108 degrees (F), which means the almonds can no longer be considered raw by any reasonable person familiar with the definition of raw."

Or, even worse April 13, 2007 11:38 AM

...they may be planning on "cold pasteurization"... which is irradiation. I don't know that, I haven't read that in the information, but if they want to call them "Raw" they could, legally (though not morally), use irradiation, as the almonds would not be heated.

I can't really think of anything much worse.

It has been impressed upon me no less than 3 or 4 times in last  couple weeks thru health talks at Fountain of Youth Seminars that one of the most healthy foods for balancing and nutrition etc are as must be RAW ALMONDS and nuts.  This is horrible, that combined with the other FDA ruling trying to pass by 4/30 by making it illegal for alternative health foods, supplements and treatments.  Its getting really bad out there must stay on an extremely vigil watch at all times. Thanks you all who contribute to this.

We can only pray, that they wont sneakily do as Diane said and irradiate them without heat so that technically they can bypass the real definition for pasturization. AHeechhhhh!!!@!!! So Scary

I've signed the petition.... this does bother me... why do they always have to mess with nature?  Why ruin a good thing??

Edgar Cayce (a well-known seer/psychic)  said "3 almonds a day will keep cancer away."  and it sure as heck wasn't "pasterized" almonds he was referring to...  Only the Raw Almonds hold the benefit's that nature intended them to have...

I do thank all of you for bringing this to the attention of many, and hopefully they will not tamper with the natural almonds.

Browsing through a site for natural products (The Big Carrot), I found this:

This is the international mandatory food irradiation label

Food irradiation is the process of exposing foods to gamma rays for a variety of reasons, including: to kill or render insects incapable of reproducing, to destroy micro-organisms in food, to delay ripening of vegetables and fruits by modifying the biochemistry of the plant's cells, and to inhibit sprouting during storage.  Health Canada's website states that 'To date, the following products have been examined by Health Canada and have been approved for irradiation: potatoes, onions, wheat, flour, whole wheat flour, whole and ground spices, and dehydrated seasoning preparations. Currently, the technology is not used widely on food commodities in Canada. So far, the main use of irradiation in Canada has been on spices.'1

Though Health Canada says that Food irradiation is a safe process, other research has shown that irradiation destroys vitamin A, C, E, K, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, carotene and thiamine. (source: Hard To Swallow, by Sarjeant and Evans, Alive Books, 1999).  Various studies around the world have shown that animals fed irradiated foods have increased chances of tumours, cataracts, kidney damage, chromosome breakage, fewer offspring and higher mortality.  In addition, it appears as though aflatoxin, a carcinogenic substance produced by molds, occurs in greater quantities in irradiated foods. (source: Coalition to Stop Food Irradition Fact Sheet).  Other products being imported from the United States and elsewhere may be irradiated too.  As usual, the safest way to avoid these contentious experiments is to buy certified organic!

ALERT UPDATE:
RULE REQUIRING PASTEURIZATION OF RAW ALMONDS GOES INTO EFFECT
Despite massive opposition from almond producers, retailers and organic consumers, the USDA has implemented its ruling to require that raw almonds be pasteurized. The rule went into effect on September 1st, and since then, all retail outlets have been forced to remove truly raw almonds from store shelves. Consumers will be misled by this action as there will still be almonds on store shelves labeled as "raw", but they will actually be pasteurized. One of the FDA-recommended pasteurization methods requires the use of propylene oxide, which is classified as a "possible human carcinogen" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and is banned in Canada, Mexico, and the European Union. Since the decision about the rule was made, Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Johanns, has stepped down. He is temporarily replaced by Chuck Conner. This may provide a new opportunity for reversal. Please contact Conner today to ask that the rule be suspended for 6 months while the public comment period is re-opened:

OCA Readers Talk Back:
What's Up With Pasteurized 'Raw' Almonds?

An OCA Reader Writes: "A year ago, in Organic Bytes #120, you reported that the USDA now mandates that all almonds, even those labeled as "raw" must now be pasteurized. Has anything changed with that issue?"

OCA Responds: More than a dozen almond growers filed a lawsuit against the USDA this month, claiming the USDA's ruling has devastated their businesses. Foreign producers do not have to abide by this rule, so consumers of raw almonds are increasingly shifting their business away from domestic production. "This ruling is a financial disaster and has closed a major customer group that we have built up over the years," said Dan Hyman, an almond grower and owner of D&S Ranches in Selma, CA.

I just had some dark chocolate almonds from Planters.

Man, were they good.

They, however, were roasted.

But I do have grave concerns about efforts to reduce dangers by introducing other dangers, especially the adding of chemicals to do so. Particularly, if there is a reduction in nutritional value.

I have had Wolfgang Puck's uncured pepperoni pizza and it is divine, if not readily available.

There was another nice pizza that was available, yet, I now go with Kashi.

Nitrites make my mouth kind of numb.

I do understand there are natural formation of the nitrites, but wonder on adding extra amounts. I am trying to reduce meat consumption...

I am all for safety, yet question some of the methods arrived at to reach that.
