"war is over"

John believed he could change the world with those three words. This group is for all those who still believe in that dream and have the spirit to work to make it come true.

This group is for dreamers, schemers, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters, street corner activists, guitar stranglers, cowboys, bikers, professors, and everyone who is tired of the pain, suffering and destruction that war visits on our planet.

We're going to talk about ways to make John's vision a reality, share ideas, news and information, sign petitions, post links to groups and websites, rabblerouse, and work for change.

Everyone is welcome in this group regardless of race , nationality, or political persuasion, and everyone is welcome to post on any topic they feel moved to share with us.

ARTIST: John Lennon
TITLE: Happy Christmas (War Is Over)
Lyrics and Chords

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

/ D - / Em - / A7 - / D - / G - / Am - / D - / G - /

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

/ C - / Dm - / Am C / G A7 /

And so this is Christmas      War is over
For weak and for strong       If you want it
For rich and the poor ones    War is over
The road is so long           Now
And so happy Christmas        War is over
For black and for white       If you want it
For yellow and red ones       War is over
Let's stop all the fight      Now

And so this is Christmas      War is over
And what have we done         If you want it
Another year over             War is over
And a new one just begun      Now
And so happy Christmas        War is over
I hope you have fun           If you want it
The near and the dear one     War is over
The old and the young         Now

War is over if you want it
War is over now
Happy Christmas (War Is Over) : John Lennon

I Hope It's A Good One
John Lennon recorded and released Happy Christmas (War Is Over) in 1972.

1972 was the year of Apollo 17, the last of the Apollo missions and the last time a man, Commander Gene Cernan, walked on the moon.

In 1972, President Richard Nixon made an unprecedented eight-day visit to Communist China and met with Mao Zedong. Months later, the Watergate scandal would begin as five men were arrested for attempting to bug the Democratic National Committee.

M*A*S*H premiered on CBS and Atari introduced the arcade version of Pong, the first video game.

With So This Is Christmas (War Is Over), Lennon, the eternal peacenik, was trying again to sing pacifism into humanity.

1972 was the year that eleven Israeli athletes were killed by an Arab terrorist group at the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.

Vietnam War was in full swing in 1972. It was the year of the "Christmas Bombing" of North Vietnam. The "Christmas Bombing" was a massive bombing campain which Nixon had hoped would put an end to the then 7 year long Vietnam War. The war, however, would continue until South Vietnam surrendered to North Vietnam in 1975.

Watching the Wheels   John Lennon

People say I'm crazy doing what I'm doing,
Well they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin,
When I say that I'm o.k. they look at me kind of strange,
Surely your not happy now you no longer play the game,

People say I'm lazy dreaming my life away,
Well they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me,
When I tell that I'm doing Fine watching shadows on the wall,
Don't you miss the big time boy you're no longer on the ball?

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round,
I really love to watch them roll,
No longer riding on the merry-go-round,
I just had to let it go,

People asking questions lost in confusion,
Well I tell them there's no problem,
Only solutions,
Well they shake their heads and they look at me as if I've lost my mind,
I tell them there's no hurry...
I'm just sitting here doing time,

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round,
I really love to watch them roll,
No longer riding on the merry-go-round,
I just had to let it go.

He saw the world and He knew whatneeded to be said.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or HUNGER
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as ONE

I recall a bunch of exhausted candidates trudging back into the barracks of the TX National Guard OCS Academy after a grueling PT session featuring a six mile run with the usual "Kill, Kill, Kill" marching cadence songs.  One guy lamented "Give peace a chance."  Another ripped into him for quoting John Lennon, " ...a guy who admitted doing 500 LSD trips so you know his brain was peanut butter."  I started to argue his reasoning and was about to cite my own astral travel numbers, but thought that perhaps OCS was not the forum for such confessions?

I must say that long before hindsight, I knew that getting kicked out of OCS for refusing to get a haircut that I did not need in order to comply with the regs was the right decision.  I wonder if any of my classmates later had reason to reflect upon my standing up against the abuse of authority?  Getting out of the NG in 1985 when it became clear to me that the mission was changing from one of backing up NATO to preparing for GOP oil wars was an even better decision.

My thanks

Wow! A Whole group dedicated to the legacy of John Lennon. His spirit still moves people to believe in peace, to proclaim the peace and to be the peace. Our love and tolerance will shine brightly in this dark world and give hope of a greater future. Thank you.

As I am also in the generation that heard John's songs in the 60's, I as well miss the songs of George Harrison. They are both playing sweet songs for God. Peace

I was born in the wrong year and thus missed John's music. I only wish I could have met him.
The world doesn't see people very often who are like him, someone who genuinly cares about Peace in the world.
I only hope he is in a better place.
His music changed my life and inspired me to start working to change the world.
I miss him.

I am so glad to see that after so many years you still cannot silence John's message. A beautiful mind and a beautiful man. It is such a simple philosophy but that is what makes it brilliant - in order to achieve peace, it's not what you do, it's what you cease to do! I am from Ireland so i understand how tentative a process it can be but as we have discovered in recent years, it is far from imposssible.

John Is Not Dead

There are so many touching tributes to John in this thread.  It just seems to me that the spirit of John Lennon is alive and very well. His music and films are filled with life, laughter, and wit:

the music of the Beatles  will never die, I was born in England in the 1950's and growing up with the Beatles music,  if they released a record on a Monday I would have it on the Tuesday or Wednesday.,
