Day of Prayer in Washington

The fasting of Ramadan has ended and the festivities of Id-al-Fitr (the Feast of Fast Breaking) are over, but our prayers continue for the light of the gospel to bring truth and hope to the Muslim people of the world.

On Friday, September 25th, the Muslim community has called for a Muslim Day of Prayer on our own Capitol Hill in Washington DC.  The Muslim people are not our enemy; there is a spiritual battle being waged.  It is especially crucial that we continue in earnest prayer and ask that you join in unity this Friday as we commit the day to fast and pray.

Father, we see the bondage of Islam and long for the Muslim people to know the light of Your truth, of Your gospel.  We pray that as Your Word has gone out through dreams and visions and through the speaking of Your Word, that eyes would be opened and hearts receive Your truth. Quicken our own hearts, Lord, as Your church to stand firmly united in Your truth.

Praying with you,

The Prayer Force Team

n recent weeks the news has been dominated by protests in Bahrain and Yemen, the war in Libya and the triple disasters in Japan. But, unnoticed by the rest of the world, another African nation is on the brink of civil war. In the aftermath of last November's election Ivory Coast is split along religious lines and Christians are being targeted in the violence. Dear Donna,

A unanimous vote by the U.N. Human Rights Council has changed the language traditionally used by the group when speaking about religion. The new nonbinding resolution replaces condemnation of religious "defamation" to wording that supports an individual's right to freedom of belief.

Previous resolutions backed largely by Muslim countries sought to criminalize any criticism of religion that believers found offensive.

According to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, the new resolution "properly focuses on protecting individuals from discrimination or violence, instead of protecting religions from criticism."

The WCICC has taken an active role in the United Nations since 1996. Over the years, many people have voiced concern about the United Nations and our relationship with the UN.

This decision by the Human Rights Council is extremely pro-religion and favors Christianity in its simplest interpretation. The United Nations is standing for the rights of Christians to practice according to the Bible and their personal beliefs in direct opposition to Muslim lobbying seeking eradication of Christianity by national governments.

SENATE CONFIRMATION HEARING FOR INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AMBASSADORThe U.S. Senate held a confirmation hearing on Tuesday for Dr. Suzan D. Johnson Cook, President Obama’s nominee for the Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom. Dr. Cook was originally nominated last June, after Open Doors and other groups had urged the Obama Administration to demonstrate its commitment to religious freedom by prioritizing the nomination of a qualified Ambassador to support religious freedom around the world. Over 10,000 Open Doors supporters signed a petition asking President Obama to make a qualified nomination. After unsuccessfully nominating Dr. Cook last year, President Obama re-nominated her, and it remains to be seen whether the Senate will confirm her.   [ send green star]  [ accepted]

DEFAMATION OF RELIGIONS UPDATE: Many of you helped speak out against the dangerous defamation of religions resolution at the UN for the past two years. And we have good news.  For the first time in 12 years, the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) did not reintroduce the resolution. This is a huge victory and we want to thank you for your prayers and actions which helped defeat it!!! This year, the OIC submitted a new resolution, which was formulated with input from the U.S. government, that has eliminated nearly all our concerns with the previous resolutions on defamation of religions. Full story>>

SAID MUSA RELEASED FROM PRISON: Said Musa, who was imprisoned on charges of apostasy on May 31, 2010 in Afghanistan, was released from prison last month. The convert to Christianity faced a possible death sentence, the prescribed punishment for leaving the Muslim faith under Sharia law. Musa endured much pressure to recant his faith while in prison, but refused to do so, even when offered release. Intense diplomatic efforts by the international community finally paid off when the Afghan government freed Musa after his nine-month imprisonment. However, Shoib Assadullah, another Afghani Christian convert from Islam, is still in prison and, according to a letter from him, is still in danger of being killed for apostasy.  Full story>>  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Iraqi Christians Leaving Iraq: The number of Christians in Iraq has dropped sharply in just the past five months. Since the massacre that killed almost 60 Christians at Our Lady of Salvation Church in Baghdad on Oct. 31, 2010, an estimated 45,000 to 95,000 Christians have left the country, leaving approximately 250,000 to 300,000 Christians in Iraq. Several events have lately caused many Iraqi Christians to seek refuge outside their home country. It appears as though radical Islamists are carrying out a program of “religicide,” as Open Doors USA President Dr. Carl Moeller terms it. For the first time since 1999, the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) did not reintroduce their resolution to prohibit the defamation of religions in the General Assembly. This is a small victory for NGOs who have been lobbying against the resolution for years, including Open Doors USA Advocacy Director Lindsay Vessey, but advocates for religious freedom know that their work is not done. The article concludes by noting, “Christians continue to suffer. But thankfully the U.N. no longer is providing legitimacy to national blasphemy laws and that is a victory.” Read the whole article>>

More than a year has already passed since Christian human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng was last seen. On April 20, 2010, he disappeared once again into Chinese police custody. The Chinese government adamantly refuses to release any information about Gao, to disclose where he is being held, or even to say what his condition is. It even refuses to confirm to Gao's family members whether he is still alive.

Gao's wife and two children, whom ChinaAid helped to resettle in the United States, have been devastated both emotionally and spiritually. They cry out every day to have a word from or about their lost loved one, their devoted father and caring husband.

Video - Gao's children miss their daddy

Note: This video is for private viewing only.
For the sake of Gao's family, we ask that you do not share it.

该视频仅供该邮件接受者私下观看,请勿传播。谢谢理解合作。

Following is an excerpt from a ChinaAid report posted on April 26, 2011, describing some of the horrific torture inflicted on Gao. [Warning - contains graphic details]

On April 19, 2011, officials from the Beijing headquarters of the Xinhua News Agency and the Propaganda Department of the Public Security Ministry’s Political Department confirmed that one phase of Mr. Ai Weiwei’s tax evasion case had come to an end.

A Public Security Ministry official with a conscience revealed that during the interrogation Ai Weiwei was subjected to torture in order to extract a confession. He said that the Ai case was being jointly handled by the Economic Investigation Corps and the Domestic Security Corps of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau.

Fu Zhenghua, the chief of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, instructed those handling the case to show Ai Weiwei the video of Gao Zhisheng being tortured, including shots of electric batons being inserted into Gao’s anus and his blood, semen, feces, and urine spurting out. Fu Zhenghua also issued an order saying: Whatever methods were used on Gao Zhisheng, use the same ones to make Ai Weiwei give in.

After several consecutive days of torture, Ai Weiwei was finally compelled to sign a statement of confession, admitting to tax evasion. (Read more: Tortured by Police, Artist Ai Weiwei Confesses After Seeing Video of Gao Zhisheng’s Torture

Though this campaign for Gao's freedom has been a long one, we must not lose heart -- for how else can Gao's wife and children continue to hold on to their hope? Please encourage more of your friends to sign the FreeGao petition. We are planning a new initiative once we have collected 200,000 signatures.

Dear Donna Matthews,

Around the world, the proverbial wheels are coming off the bus. The Western world sits under a crushing load of debt, Islamist power is rising everywhere, and the established geopolitical order is unraveling.

The revolution in Egypt has led to a breakdown of law and order that Islamists have used to their advantage. They have led several large attacks on Christians, and the future does not look bright.

Last month, the leading defender of Christians in Pakistan, Shahbaz Bhatti, was assassinated. Pakistani Islamists have killed many others and have targeted most of the Christian leaders in the country. They have said openly that they want to decapitate Christianity in terms of leadership. They have infiltrated every level of the government, and, frankly, the battle for Pakistan has been lost.

Our typical response to all this instability and uncertainty is fear and trepidation, but none of this was unanticipated by our Father. Prior to Egypt's recent instability, believers in a prayer movement there were hearing from the Lord that they were entering a three-year period of intense crushing from the evil one.

If you are tempted to fear, remember that there is a grand plan being worked out. As the Word tells us, "The Lord sat as King at the flood" (Psalm 29:10 NASB). That means that in the midst of the craziness of the world, the Lord reigns and is undisturbed (but not uncaring).

The persecuted know that our lives here are temporary and so their security is not connected with money, position, or power. They know that the Lord is our security and our source of life. As our metaphorical boat is tossed to and fro in the waves, hold onto the mast. That is, grasp hold of the Lord with all you have. Your connection with Him is the source of life, real life. He is the bread of life and the real food your soul craves (peace, contentment, and hope).

Please give generously to the persecuted. Thank you in advance for your generosity towards them.

Jeff King

While many in Nigeria were still celebrating the victory of Christian presidential candidate Goodluck Jonathan, Christians in northern Nigeria were grieving over the mass graves that would be the final resting place of their loved ones.

In the Muslim north, Muslim mobs reacted to the news of Goodluck's election on April 18th by launching massive simultaneous attacks against Christians in almost every northern state. The mobs massacred hundreds of Christians, torched more than 300 churches, and destroyed countless Christian homes.

Nigerian government authorities were in such a hurry to hide the extent of the massacre that they organized mass burials of the victims almost immediately after the attacks. As a result, the exact death toll remains unknown.

Kaduna State Hardest Hit

In Kaduna state, where Christians suffered the greatest losses, our sources estimate that at least 300 people were slaughtered in the towns of Zonkwa and Kafanchan, alone.

Today, close to a thousand families are displaced and living in camps set up by the government. More than 200 families lost their homes, and hundreds more have fled their homes in fear of continued attacks.

As she lay on the ground dying, Dune looked into her husband's tear-filled eyes and asked, "Is this the end between us?" Since the April elections, elevated tensions have resulted in violence between Christians and Muslims living in northern Nigeria.
