DEAR FRIENDS,
Some of you may remember me telling you that there would be natural disasters, persecution, and pleas for help.
They are coming in a little late this summer but this is the second one I've received.
Sometimes they don't understand English well or what our proper titles are. They are sincere. I beg of you, do not harden your hearts. Even if you can not send money, make an effort to pray. Contact as many people as possible, organize prayer groups, and help groups, make a commitment with your prayer partner to pray on regular basis. There may be more that come in. Ask for donations and emergency supplies.
Contact your churches, study groups, or anyone else you can think of and pray, pray pray!
God Bless you!
Donna

An earthquake ravages villages in Pakistan.  Please pray for the people of Pakistan and especially for the Christians, our brothers and sisters!

KAN BANGLA, Pakistan (AFP) – The death toll from a powerful earthquake in southwest Pakistan could climb above 300, officials said Thursday, as rescuers struggled to deliver aid to desperate survivors.

Multiple aftershocks continued to rock impoverished Baluchistan province, creating fresh fears among survivors who prepared to spend a second night in the open in sub-zero temperatures as the cold winter set in.

Some traveled long distances on severely damaged roads to the provincial capital Quetta to plead for tents and emergency supplies as some villages still had not received help more than 36 hours after the quake.

Dear Donna Matthews,

On February 2, Rev. Wilson Issavi was arrested by Iranian state security agents in Isfahan, Iran, an incident that has recently hit mainstream Christian media.  However, ICC sources have confirmed that there were an additional eight other Christians arrested along with Rev. Issavi who are currently imprisoned and awaiting charges.  The names and whereabouts of the remaining eight Christians must remain undisclosed for security purposes.

Rev. Issavi was visiting a friend’s home in Shahin Shahr, Isfahan when state security raided the house unannounced.  Rev. Issavi, his hosts and others were apprehended by the security agents and immediately taken to prison.  Friends and family are deeply concerned as they are unable to contact Rev. Issavi.  The location and physical condition of the nine Christians is unknown.

The arrest of Rev. Issavi was a devastating blow to the Iranian Christian community.  Rev. Issavi is known among friends as a humble and devoted servant of the church.  He is considered a man of prayer who has lived a modest life to better assist those in need.

The arrests occurred after the Iranian government forced the closure of Rev. Issavi’s church, the Evangelical Church of Kermanshah, on January 2.  Before its closure, the Evangelical Church of Kermanshah was among the few remaining open churches in the country.

Iranian Christians are under constant threat of discrimination, imprisonment, torture, and even execution by the Iranian government which severely restricts religious freedom.

Please pray:

-          That Rev. Wilson Issavi and the eight other believers will be released from prison.

-          That the Holy Spirit will give them strength and comfort amidst any torture or mistreatment they may face.

-          That the Lord will give strength to their families.

Sincerely in Christ,

Pakistani Christian Beaten for Refusing to Convert to Islam

Riaz Masih’s Christian parents died when he was just a young boy. Although raised by a Muslim cleric, he never converted to Islam. His continual refusal to convert infuriated his four older Muslim brothers, and after ransacking his house on Feb 8, they beat him unconscious.

"They threatened…that I must convert right now or face death," Masih said. "They said killing an infidel is not a sin, instead it’s righteousness in the sight of Allah almighty." According to Compass News Masih said that Akram-Ullah, the Muslim cleric, and his brothers offered him 1 million rupees (US$11,790), a spacious residence and a woman of his choice to marry in order to lure him to Islam, but he declined.

Father we praise our brother Raiz for his courage to withstand the threats on his life and stay steadfast in his love for You. We ask that You cover him with Your divine protection against any future attacks and that his witness will bring honor and glory to You. We pray for softening of the hearts of Riaz’s brothers so that they too can call You Lord!

Is there a difference between "freedom of religion" and "freedom of worship"? Some advocates for international religious freedom are monitoring what they fear is a change in the language being used by Obama administration officials.  They are concerned that the broad emphasis on spreading "freedom of religion," which the President used when he spoke in Cairo last June, is being subtly replaced by the more limited concept of "freedom of worship."  Read more >>  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded tore apart houses, bridges and highways in central Chile on Saturday and sent a tsunami racing halfway around the world. Chileans near the epicenter were tossed about as if shaken by a giant, and the head of the emergency agency said authorities believed at least 300 people were dead.

Five Family Members Gunned Down in Mosul

Mosul, Iraq is a dangerous place for Christians to live. Some remain there because they do not have alternatives. Others choose to stay and serve the community. Such was the case of one Christian family living and serving in Mosul both out of necessity and commitment. But last week, attackers forced themselves into the house, gunning down all five family members and then throwing their bodies out onto the street as a message to Christians. Also in the past week 40 to 50 more families have fled Mosul. While it is difficult to quote exact numbers, it is estimated that just ten years ago, 100,000 Christians lived in Mosul. Now it is thought that only 150-300 Christian families remain.

Father, our heart breaks that Your people are under attack in Mosul. Comfort and strengthen them. Send Your Spirit to rain down on this region in power that in the midst of this persecution Your church will not only survive, but increase mightily.

Muslim Demonstrators in West Java Demand Closure of Legal Church

Galilea Protestant Church in Indonesia has been worshipping legally for the past eighteen years. Rev. Tetelepta reported to Compass Direct News that in 1992 permission from neighbors and the local government was obtained to operate legally. Now however, hundreds of protestors have demanded the closure of this 600 member church shouting, “Churches are not allowed!” and “We faithful Muslims reject the presence of churches!” Muslim groups claim this protest is evidence that the church does not have support of their neighbors, but Rev. Tetelepta told Compass News that likely 95 percent of the protestors came from other areas. They will continue to worship despite the demonstration and are working with the police.

Father, we praise you that Your church has grown in influence where there are now 600 Christians worshipping at Galilea Protestant Church. As the powers of darkness stand in opposition to Your work, strengthen these believers and give them favor with local authorities that Your church may stand as a beacon of truth.

Praying with you,

The Prayer Force Team

Dear Donna

“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen.” 1 Cor. 4:16-18

Muslim Mob Kills Wife and Children of Christian in Pakistan

On June 21, Jamshed Masih left his house for work while his wife and four children were still singing hymns before breakfast. Later that morning, a neighbor, Ali Murtaza, witnessed Masih’s 11-year-old son buying detergent for his mother at a local shop. The shopkeeper asked him if he was a Christian; the child responded that he was. “The shopkeeper refused to give him the packet of detergent and spoke harshly to him, ‘I don’t sell to any non-Muslim, you are not welcome here, don’t you dare ever come to my shop again,’” Murtaza said. Soon after, a mob of local residents came to the family’s door, led by the Muslim religious leader, Maulana Mahfooz Khan. The mob confronted Masih’s wife, Razia, and accused the boy of blaspheming Muhammad, the prophet of Islam. When she protested, they brutally murdered her and her children.

The family had recently moved to the area due to a work transfer for Masih. The Muslims there had notified the religious leader, Khan, saying, “We cannot allow these non-Muslims to live here, they will be a bad influence on our children.” Local authorities are now too afraid of the Muslim leader to file charges, according to Compass News. Masih has filed a complaint with the chief minister of Punjab Province, begging him for justice. “We condemn this brutal murder of innocent children in the name of Islam,” local pastor Saleem Mall said. “This has to stop now. We appeal to the government to let us live in peace.”

Father, we are devastated to hear of Masih’s loss and the persecution he faces. Please give him strength as he mourns his loved ones, and let him experience Your comfort and love in the midst of such pain. We pray for justice, freedom, and peace in Pakistan, and for protection over the Christians who remain opposed in Muslim dominant areas.

Dear Donna Matthews,

ICC has learned that a Moroccan Christian named Jamaa Ait Bakrim has been imprisoned for his faith. Jamaa has been serving five years in the largest prison in Morocco for trumped up charges. Until now his case has largely been hidden from outside media.

In order to advocate for Jamaa and other Christian prisoners, ICC is launching a prisoner focus page where we can post more details and pictures. See the new site at: www.persecution.org/prisonerfocus/

Jamaa became a Christian in the 1990's while travelling through Europe. When he returned to Morocco he was ostracized and later imprisoned for refusing to stop talking about his faith. He served over a year in prison.

In 2005 he was again tried and found guilty of "proseytization." The judge condemned Jamaa to 15 years in prison, stating, “the fact that Jamaa denies accusations of proselytization is inconsistent with the confession during which he proclaimed he was a son of Christ and he wanted Moroccans to become Christians…”

Jamaa is currently serving out this sentence, and is located in Prison Centrale of Kenitra, Morocco.

Please pray:

-          That Jamaa is released. His existence has been hidden from the outside world and we must hold him up and pray for his courage.

-         That the hearts of Moroccan leaders change toward Christians, and they stop the persecution that has led to the recent expulsion of 100 Christian foreigners.

-         For the Moroccan church to withstand the increasing pressure from the government and stand out as an example of endurance and grace.

On May 24, Said Musa was arrested by government authorities in Afghanistan following a television broadcast that showed Christian baptisms and worship, according to The Voice of the Martyrs contacts. Musa has openly professed his faith, and he was interrogated about his conversion to Christianity on national television in June. Musa's wife has visited him in prison.
