The court has rejected Shi’s case for the second time due to insufficient evidence. China - Update on Shi Weihan's Court Hearing

Praise God the court hearing was held for Chinese Christian, Shi Weihan, on April 9. Although the verdict has not been given, it is expected within the month. Shi was said to look in reasonable health at his hearing. Shi has been in prison since March 19, 2008 accused of printing and distributing Christian books and Bibles without government permission. The court has twice rejected the police case against him due to insufficient evidence but the police continued to hold him, seeking to find more evidence.

Heavenly Father, we pray for Shi and his family. We pray for peace, strength and courage as they endure this trial. We pray for Your hand of mercy to be upon the judge deciding his fate and that justice will prevail.

Thank you for joining in prayer for Shi Weihan, Christians in Orissa and the elections taking place in India. The election process begins on April 16 and continues until May 13, please continue to pray these next four weeks for the nation of India. “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16b) As you pray, may God’s presence fill you as you stand alongside our brothers and sisters who face persecution in India, China and other countries of the world.

Lord, we thank You for Your faithfulness; we thank You for the courage of Hamoud Saleh Al-Amri to boldly proclaim his faith and love for You.  We pray for his protection as he grows in his walk with you. We pray for his witness to those who still walk in darkness.  May the love he shares, the daily choices he makes… open the eyes and hearts of others in his community so they will want to follow his Savior; to follow You. "He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.” John 1:7       [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

Father we thank you for Your grace and Your faithful presence in times of trouble and in our weakness. We entrust Alimjan to You… please minister healing to his body, peace to his soul and spiritual strength to him and to his family. We pray for the doctors caring for him and for his persecutors. In the suffering of Alimjan may the sufferings of Jesus Christ be seen. Through this testimony may those who persecute our beloved brother see that they also persecute our Lord. May you keep your servant in peace and in the salvation of Your Son, Jesus Christ. “…Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”  (2 Corinthians 12:9-11)

As you pray this week for Alimjan Yimit, please take a moment to speak up on behalf of Alimjan. Also, from April 26 through May 2, we invite you to pray for all the events surrounding North Korea Freedom Week.

Thank you for standing shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters who face persecution in China, Saudi Arabia, North Korea and other countries. As you continue your prayers of intercession this week, may God’s presence be your guide. “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16b)

  Dear Donna,
If there's one thing our Lord asks of us, it's to pray without ceasing.
Recently, we have devoted much of our focus to the tragic situation in North Korea.  We've asked you to help advocate, to send your support and to spread awareness to family and friends.

But what truly grounds all of our efforts is a commitment to prayer.
To help inspire and inform your prayers for persecuted Christians we have created a free prayer guide covering North Korea and other countries on the World Watch List.

Where human efforts fail, prayer can break through the darkness.  Our God knows the hearts and minds of men, and can turn even the worst of oppressors to Christ.

Join us in praying for the body of Christ living under persecution.
Father in heaven, have mercy upon our brothers and sisters living under the burden of persecution.  Send the comfort of your Spirit and empower them to reach out to

More food, water desperately needed in Sri Lanka - LWR responds

Baltimore, May 18, 2009 - Lutheran World Relief (LWR) partners working on the ground in Sri Lanka only have three to four more days’ supply of food to feed thousands of people displaced by violence between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

“Our partners are struggling to provide food to the swelling numbers of internally displaced persons (IDPs),” says Joanne Fairley, LWR’s Regional Director for Asia and the Middle East.

Fighting escalated this past weekend in the last LTTE controlled territory, sending thousands more civilians fleeing south in search of sanctuary amidst the announcement from the Sri Lankan military that LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran was killed.

The news of Prabhakaran’s death, and the LTTE’s subsequent surrender, elicited celebrations in the streets of Sri Lanka, however, thousands of people, namely Tamils, remain displaced and in desperate need of food, water and sanitation.

In addition to the thousands who have made it to a camp, there are an estimated 40,000 en route to camps. To meet the needs of the increasing numbers of displaced the government has had to open more safe zone camps. Those in the newest camps are not yet receiving food aid and the camps with which LWR are working have estimated that, feeding people at the current level, their food supply will run out within three to four days.

The rise in the number of displaced has put a strain on the already limited resources of the camps. In one zone, community kitchens intended to feed 400 people are desperately trying to accommodate upwards of 3,500.

“The situation in these camps is quite desperate. There is simply not enough food for everyone and if we don’t respond swiftly, people will starve,” says Fairley.

In addition to widespread hunger, disease is a growing concern as many people arrived with only the clothing on their backs. While visiting a camp in Vavuniya, LWR staff encountered a woman caring for her sick infant grandson. During the visit the child became sick with diarrhea and the woman did not have adequate water to bathe the child and had only her clothes to use to clean him. The need for water, cloting and sanitary supplies is critical as overcrowding in the camps will likely lead to the rapid spread of disease.

Water access and storage are critical problems as there is currently not enough water for people to use to drink, bathe and cook. There is an urgent need for containers in which to collect water and for toilets.

Lutheran World Relief has already committed $50,000 in response to this crisis and is working with local organizations to distribute cooked food packets, provide supplementary food items for community kitchens, and provide water. An additional $500,000 is needed to mount a comprehensive relief effort, and LWR has issued an urgent appeal to its donors to contribute toward this effort.

“The news of the LTTE surrender is encouraging,” says Fairley. “However, the humanitarian aid community has to remain focused on the thousands of people who remain displaced and in need of food, water, and sanitation.”

Lutheran World Relief is accepting donations for the Sri Lanka crisis online at, via telephone at 800-LWR-LWR-2, or by mail at P.O. Box 17061 Baltimore, MD 21298-9832.

Lord, we ask that you clothe Your flock in a blanket of protection from any further harm or acts of violence.  “He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one” (2 Thessalonians 3:3).  We ask that You put a halt to the schemes of the enemy and foil all of the plans as in Psalm 35:1, “May those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay.  May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of Lord driving them away.”

Additional Prayers for India

  • Pray for the Church in India, pray that it would grow in numbers and influence throughout India.
  • Pray for the continuing relief efforts in Orissa. Ask the Lord to rebuild the shattered lives of His people.
  • Pray for the ‘lost’ in India. That they will hear the Gospel and receive eternal salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Father, help us to remember that we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, and give us the desire to do what we can to support Your people who are suffering for You around the globe.

Praying with you,

The Prayer Force Team
