anonymous THE UNDERGROUND CHURCH! January 25, 2009 11:46 AM

The underground church is many things to many people. I will explore some eventful happenings and some definitions here and tell you to the best of my knowledge what is going on.
The first definition is a church that meets under the ground such in a facility built underground or in caves or unusual meeting places below the surface of the earth.
In the days of the Roman empire and even since than, [groups of Christians who had to go underground because of dangerous situations have hidden underground in order to survive and worship Jesus the way that they wanted to.]
One group went deep under the earth in man made tunnels and elaborately constructed rooms and homes, to escape persecution from the Roman empire, where above ground thousands of Christians were arrested, burned and crucified for worshiping their Lord. and Savior, Jesus!
This has happened in various countries and in various time periods throughout the centuries.

The second definition is a secret organization or church who is above ground but does not worship out in the open. They may worship in secret churches, or in their homes or elsewhere, but they must worship in secret because they live in an area where extremists will attack and harm them and destroy their churches or their government does not allow the Christian religion to exist. These worshipers dearly would love to go to a Church as everyone in the US does and worship openly and freely but it is too dangerous for these followers of Jesus to worship openly. These Christians worship in secret in over 50 countries. I don't think people realize how much persecution is going on across the earth, but it really is happening in many countries!  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

The third definition of underground is  loosely organized or even unorganized  groups across the United States, Canada and Western Europe of followers of Jesus, Christians, people who have turned their lives over to Jesus but for one reason or another do not worship in a church.
This probably always has gone on but for the last few decades it seems that this is happening more and more.
There are many reasons for this happening. These people might not be isolated but still do not worship in a church.
These groups may include, the homeless, street people who may or may not have a home, people who may feel uncomfortable in a church, immigrants [both legal and illegal], villagers who live too far away from a church but still have brothers and sisters close enough to worship in their homes, and those who are unhappy with their present day churches. They also may be young people who create coffee house and worship in the out of doors
Their worship is not necessarily secret, but perhaps they are part of a revival which happens every other decade or so, and perhaps they are reaching those who ordinarily would not go to church. In this electronic day and age there is also the internet, us, although I am not saying that we are an underground church, because in truth we are not a church, but we do fellowship with each other. But mostly I am talking about those who meet and have actual worship services.

So you now know or at least have an idea, of what an underground church is. Another facet of underground churches is the traveling church or ministers who travel from place to place and to start revivals, and while you don't see this as often as you use to some ministers still put up a very large tent and hold services out of doors for any one to attend. Whether they are actually underground is another question all together, however, now in this day and age, that may be the case.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

YES,in many cases they are a necessity. You can not stop the Holy Spirit from doing the job God intended to be done. Many people have tried but they have not succeeded in doing this.
In countries where there is heavy persecution, underground churches provide a safe place for Christians to worship.
Even in our country underground churches are important, because they bring many souls to know Jesus, who otherwise would never learn about Jesus. Let's face it- some people will never step foot in a church, but they might listen to a biker who still uses his Harley for a place to preach, a street person might listen to a long haired Jesus person in a coffee house, and a homeless person might listen to someone who also has been homeless. The Holy Spirit does not waste any opportunity to bring salvation to another soul.

Another thing we must remember is that Jesus cares about our souls more than our politics. And if there is one person who can not or will not go to church, than Jesus will seek to reach that person any way that can be done.

That is not to say that going to church is wrong. Going to church is very good for we are not to forsake the fellowship, but I just want everyone to realize that there are many ways that people can be reached for Jesus.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]
