High! October 23, 2007 1:36 PM

Wow, that's quite a question, Alex! Being that I've been a user for 29 years this month, there have been several reasons. I began smoking in October 1978, 2 months before my 17th birthday. I had been pestering my older brother to let me try some, because I was curious. A number of my friends were using it, and I was curious as to what all the uproar was about. When I tried it, it was love at first toke. Much like Alex has said, I was attracted by the Spirituality of Cannabis. The world I entered when I got high was a world I'd never known existed. I wanted to live in that world all day and every day. Cannabis Spirituality became my lifestyle, so it's natural I also became a Hippie. I was blessed to be able to party with my Uncle and his friends, who were all 10 to 15 years older than I was, and these guys had been in San Francisco, in The Haight, in 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969. These guys who taught me to be a Hippie, with all the philosophy attendant to the title, were the founders, the trailblazars and pioneers of The Hippie Movement. They were the ORIGINAL Hippies. As a second generation product of that movement, I wear the name proudly. In the Summer of '06, I began to get very ill; difficulty breathing, extreme exhaustion and fatigue, moderate to severe pain in my muscles, bones, joints and nerves. This illness continued to get worse to the pojnt that I was forced to retire and abandon my career in October of '06. I was a restautant chef. I have Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (an extremely rare disease for men), a second variety known as Discoid Lupus, also advanced Emphysema, COPD and congestive heart failure. The Marijuana I've been smoking for almost 30 years is NOT to blame for my pulmonary illnesses: I've also been a 2-pack a day cigarette smoker since 1978. Tobacco is what trashed my lungs, okay? NOT the pot! As I mentioned, Lupus is extremely rare in men. It is an autoimmune disease that is basically the opposite of AIDS. Whereas AIDS will destroy the immune system, Lupus causes the immune system to lose the ability to determine "friend or foe". The disease causes the immune system to turn on the body, on the host. In most cases, the immune system will begin to destroy a specific organ or system of the body. There are 1.5 million Lupus patients in the U.S. Only 10% of patients are men. My late mother had Lupus, and only 10% of the children of Lupus patients will get the disease. I recently ran the numbers and determined the odds. There was a 99.95% chance I would NOT get Lupus. But, I don't complain, for many reasons, but that's another story for another group! Of course, I will be a Hippie and a Cannabis Spiritualist until I die. But, these days, Cannabis has become both medicine and pain reliever for me. As long as I am able to smoke a minimum of the equivalent of 2 joints each day, the worst of my symptoms remain in remission. Alex mentioned his use of Cannabis for his asthma. It also greatly relieves my Emphysema. The reason Cannabis can do this is because one of the components of the smoke is the purest form of Epinephrine to be found in nature, and is the same drug given (in synthetic form) to asthmatics and people in anaphylactic shock. Cannabis is God's Perfect Medicine, and is His gift to humanity, to keep us healthy and happy. Hey, Alex? "Purple Romulan"?.....makes me wanna try it, just based on the name! Do the Klingons grow any? Reminds me of a time in the early 80's when I heard of a variety I wanted to try, just because of the name. This 'Kine' was grown in the Manatuska Valley of Alaska, and was called "Manatuska Thunderf**k". Now, wouldn't YOU try something with a name like that? Thanks for the invite, Alex, my friend! Do you need a co-host? Let me know if you do. Blessed Be, everyone! Be cool, and FREE THE WEED! Why do you use cannabis? October 23, 2007 8:40 AM

As my first post to this new group, I'd like to pose the question: "Why do you use cannabis?"

My answer is threefold:

First and foremost, I use cannabis as an alternative to alcohol. I would rather feel relaxed and happy than uncontrolled and unihibited. There are times when I drink, but that is usually because the celebration I am attending has too many people that would frown on cannabis use.

Second, I use cannabis for the medicinal effects. Growing up in the polluted San Joaquin Valley resulted in asthma. I was hospitalized many times as a child due to severe asthma attacks. My asthma was mysteriously reduced to almost nothing after I started using cannabis in my early teens. I also have a family history of severe back problems. My father, grandfather, great uncle and his children all have had multiple back surgeries by their mid-thirties. I do have occasional flareups, but not really severe enough to warrant anything but taking some ibuprophin. Most recently, I had a motorcycle accident that resulted in 6 broken ribs and a broken collarbone. The oxycodone that the doctors gave me worked somewhat, but I was left dizzy and just plain weird feeling. I got a hold of some "Purple Romulan" and cut my oxycodone intake in half. This resulted in less pain and dizziness. These accounts are purely anecdotal, but are supported by research that I plan on posting when I have more time.

My final reason for using cannabis is spiritual. I am of the Heathen Faith, in which I commune with my ancestors, nature and the spirits that reside there, and the Gods of the northern pantheon. Cannabis lets me open my consciousness to my surroundings while letting me focus on the spirits or gods that I am communicating with. I can be totally relaxed and open, and yet still be in control of my thoughts and intentions.

These are my reasons for using cannabis. What are yours?
