anonymous Welcome April 05, 2005 11:29 PM

Welcome, welcome, one and all! Thanks to Freediver for creating a group where people can spend time discussing all the angles of various boycotts before we add our signatures. Being as fully informed as possible about what we're being asked to boycott is essential to our ability to make choices based on the information we've gathered and provided, rather than simply signing out of blind faith. Because, let's face it, folks: There are some boycotts in place that just don't provide enough information or that aren't genuine. So, thanks again, Freediver, for creating a group for people to talk about what's on the boards first, before signing or supporting those causes. Sincerely, Wolf Singer  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]
 April 05, 2005 11:35 PM

No problem. There are still two spots open for hosts, if anyone is interested. I would prefer left wing people, preferably even a PETA member. I am doing this to make the group as welcoming as possible to the people who create and promote most of the boycotts on care2. I don't want this to be seen as a group for rubbishing the boycotts.  [ send green star]
 April 05, 2005 11:41 PM

Oh yeah - we also need a group photo. I'm thinking a protest photo or a 'banned' symbol (red circle with a diagonal dash through it). Any suggestions?  [ send green star]
anonymous Group photo April 05, 2005 11:54 PM

I like the idea of a "banned" symbol, myself. Only question is: What will the symbol be banning?  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]
 April 05, 2005 11:55 PM

How about a stack of notes? Dollar bills for you Americans  [ send green star]
anonymous Hehehe April 05, 2005 11:57 PM

Banning money, Freediver? LOL I don't know how well that would go over... (check your netmessages, Freediver...)  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]
 April 05, 2005 11:58 PM

you check yours I meant more like - don't hand over your money. Cause that's what it's all about. Cutting off the money.  [ send green star]
anonymous Ohhh, I see April 06, 2005 12:04 AM

Well, in that case, Freediver, you could have an image of paper money bearing a logo to the effect of "Don't hand over your money" on it, with the 'banned' symbol crossing through it... or something like that. What do you think?  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]
 April 06, 2005 12:06 AM

Or - a hand holding out a few notes with a banned symbol slapped accross it. It would be good if we could just copy one from somewhere to save us creating it, but we may have to to paintshop one up.  [ send green star]
anonymous OOOOO April 06, 2005 12:07 AM

YES! THAT'S PERFECT, FREEDIVER! Let's do that!  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]
anonymous In fact April 06, 2005 12:09 AM

If you won't mind waiting a few hours, I'll draw something up, and paste it into my Care2 album, if you want. I DO need to get some sleep, my dear; it's just after 1am here, right now, and I'm all pooped out!  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]
 April 06, 2005 12:11 AM

Righto, you go ahead and do it. There's no great rush.  [ send green star]
anonymous Okey dokey April 06, 2005 12:12 AM

On that 'note' then (pun intended LOL), I'm off to LaLa Land. I'll talk to you in a few! Nighty-night, Shadow. Nighty-night, Freediver.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]
 April 06, 2005 12:13 AM

The easiest way might be to find a cartoon style picture of a hand holding a few notes, then do the banned bit yourself - just make sure the hand bit looks big so people can make it out.  [ send green star]
anonymous Hi, all April 06, 2005 6:02 PM

Thanks for the invite, Freediver Looking forward to learning more about boycotts.

 April 06, 2005 6:16 PM

Hi hugger. Thanks for joining. That's all the host spots taken up - still waiting for the last one to join. If anyone missed out and really wants to help host you'll have to arrange that with one of the current hosts.

Now I'm going to start promoting the group a bit. I'd like to put an invitation on the other boycott groups, the PETA group and the town hall - since that is where I first raised the issue of discussing boycotts. Any volunteers?

anonymous Freediver, April 06, 2005 6:27 PM

Do we need to invite PETA - I disagree STRONGLY with most of their 'policies'?

 [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]
 April 06, 2005 6:29 PM

Yes. They are the ones doing most of the boycotts, so it might defeat the purpose of the group if we don't. I have made some posts on their group which I expected to be very controversial, but I was actually very impressed with how maturely they responded. I would also like them to change some of their policies. The only way to do that is to open up the channels of communication.  [ send green star]
anonymous Welcome Bernice April 06, 2005 6:32 PM

everyone to this new group.  I think we can achieve some real and positive goals here, and I look forward to working with all of you.

Freediver, since this is your group, you have the honor of opening up the group promotion.  Go ahead and advertise the group in the Town Hall.  I will go over there and create a Bulletin Board right now.

I want it to be a supportive environment and to encourage discussion around improving the effectiveness of boycotts, not just the appropriateness of individual boycotts.

I'm still having some problems with my computer, but I think I might be able to get us a great logo.  I know a couple of people who are terrific designers; one or both of them might be willing to design a logo for us...

I'll try to be here more, but I can only go as far as my comp. will take me; think I've got some nasties on my drive...

even a "PETA" member April 07, 2005 6:22 PM

I am a vegetarian/animal activist, and I do not always support the methods PETA uses to spread their message.  But, they do provide a lot of quality information about various issues.  Supporting a boycott sponsored by them is not the same as supporting all of their media tactics.  Support the projects that you agree with.  Write PETA and tell them why you are opposed to those you don't agree with.  What is important is that we save animals lives (and save them from cruel treatment) -  whether you are left winged or right winged -- or agree with PETA - is less important than the helping the animals.   [ send green star]  [ accepted]
 April 08, 2005 3:04 PM

I agree completely. I don't take everything that PETA says as the gospel. But the most outrageous practice that I saw in PETA Times magazine,Winter 2004 issue, was "mulesing". In the sheep indusry, they have bred a sheep that makes more wool because it as excess folds of skin(like a Sharpai dog) and therefore, produces more wool per sheep. The problem is that blowflies eat away at the rotting flesh towards the backside of the sheep because of all the fecal matter stuck withing the folds. So, GET THIS, They take these huge shears, and without any anesthesia, they cut the fleshy folds of the sheep's rump literally leaving huge holes in thier flesh! It's left to scab over and the flies go away. The sheep are never administered any pain medication! You don't want to see the pictures, they are horrible. But, PETA now encourages all to boycott Benetton clothing until it stops purchasing this type of wool.

I had never before even HEARD of anything like this! UGH!!

Hi, I just joined.  Thanks to Freediver for inviting me.  I felt right at home as soon as I saw that many of the group members & co-hosts were people I already knew and respected (ShadowBear, WolfSinger, Linda T (sister!!!!), Sheena, Terri, Navin and many more).  Just looking over some of the threads it appears to be an excellent group--now I won't have to start one myself!    In fact, I think I can un-join several other groups now that I have this one!  Anyway, good to see all you old friends, and meet all you new ones--looking forward to being a frequent participant!!!

Thanks, Freediver! April 11, 2005 4:08 PM

Thank you for the invitation, Freediver.  I'm on the left, have supported PETA for many years as a member in the UK, and have now just about managed to live up to their ideals with regards to veganism and being careful what you buy in case it's animal skin etc.  I think their methods are spot on.  There are so many things that would never have been achieved without them and they have been an inspiration to countless organisations.  They don't compromise.  That's what I love.  I also love and adore IFAW who are also uncompromising and now the HSUS and the Sea Shepherds.  What gutsy people! There are other organisations too that are too numerous to mention.    I've learned a lot from Care2.  And I've been more involved day in day out now because of Care2.  I'll boycott the companies that condone cruelty and the denial of human rights.  I'm learning more every day.  Thanks again.  I look forward to this. Best wishes to all.
