Call Congress, vote no on Deficit Bill August 01, 2011 4:07 PM

Call Congress, vote no on Deficit Bill These actions on Disabled Greens News and discussion: Call Congress, vote no on Deficit Bill: This petition on Call Congress, vote no on Deficit Bill: Dinos suggest, "nobody wants to see what's in sausage-making, they just want it done", we know what's in their "deal", they’re grinding up the future’s of all lower-middle-class to poor; we can stand, say no to the devolutionary direction the S.S. tea party is steering their tripartisanship in- we won‘t watch our nation crashed into fascist rocks, our futures dashed upon them, for the uber-greedy! Call your Congress person and ask them to vote no on the deficit bill. Sample talking points, letter: Dear Congress Person, Hi. Oppose the creation of a uber-Congress in the deficit bill. The constitution makes no mention of such a body, and I understand this is how members of Congress hope to insulate themselves now, from making unpopular votes to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits, in the future. On behalf of the elderly and all citizens who will face serious setbacks if these cuts are enacted, I want you to know that I consider a vote for this bill a vote to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits; and I will not be supporting you in the next election if you vote for this ‘uber-Congress to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits’ bill, the, supposed, deficit bill. Actions to defend elderly, handicapped, kids, women, et al :) June 28, 2011 1:31 AM

Actions to defend elderly, handicapped, kids, women, et al :) These actions on Disabled Greens News and discussion: Actions to defend elderly, handicapped, kids, women, et al: This petition on Act, defend nonrich: Sample talking points, letter: We can't allow dems to devolve back into dinos, democrats in name only, loyal republican pets, or allow Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security to have their funding cut, even by the scalpel-in-chief’s “thinning them“ to meet needs of political expediency; nor their coverage decreased- the cat food commission was wrong! Another example, the rem dictated, and dem leaning towards, “raising the retirement age in S.S.“, would be stealing from the elderly who were contracted to pay into it all their lives and retire at 65 years old; as well, middle-class to poor people’s life expectancy isn’t going up, and hasn’t been, only the upper-middle-class to rich’s is- in the future, with this coming bad economic decade, the same will be the case. Dems can’t destroy elderly, and future elderly, in order to give more extreme tax cuts to the extremely rich, and richest corps.. Society’s standing behind its elderly isn’t an "entitlement", which the rems and dems have been calling Medicare, Social Security, etc., for months, we give them, it’s a gift we’re returning; which should be returned in full- briefly, it’s a civil right. How have we gotten to the point where we must stand up to rems even if it means they may try and close down the federal gov’t by obstructing the raising of the debt ceiling; by the dems embracing the devolutionary direction of the corporate structure‘s convolution, as the rems do- manifesting political conning of the populace with delusional paradigms and constructs like, “we must avoid economic loses by conspiring with the rems gutting the weak”, all based on the delusional construct of duality, by which the dems may try and “get away with it”, conspiring with the rich and rems while making believe they had to. How are the delusional constructs, like ‘materialism, sides‘, etc., dispelled, for they don’t exist, simply, dualities’ supposedly enabling, division, its goal divide and conquer, only works on the divided, life is indivisible; as one’s potential is illimitable- Ghandi said, “we must be the changes we wish to see in the world“, through, “Abhaya, fearlessness“. How, addressing, not addressing injustices has costs, former is individual, the later is global, as well, if you don’t stand up for yourself, exercise your responsibility, you lose power, also, those real deficits (consequence of delusional gains), in lost power taken from us, or abdicated willingly to the Gov‘t, etc., individually, communally, globally, add up; manifesting autocratic power, which corrupts until it’s absolute power- that corrupts absolutely. Yet, one can’t abdicate their responsibility, therefore, one suffers the consequences of what those false, or misled leaders do, and don’t. That’s why “Abhaya”, is the only solutioning, betwixt one and reality; which, if continually concentrated, evolves one, all- if not you, then who, now, when, here, where, this, what? Don’t let dems cave at all. reality Dear Mr. President- Do Not Yield: Will You Join the Call for Shared Sacrifice? Read Bernie Sander's letter to the president -- and add your name!: What are your budget priorities? Take a poll: Back our champions today: As we recently announced, Progressive Future is now Fair Share Alliance. And, while our name has changed our fight to defend Medicare and education funding in the current budget battle goes on. As you read this President Obama has stepped in to lead negotiations and everything is at stake. Republicans like Sen. Mitch McConnell want to cut Medicare and slash other critical programs. And, they won’t even discuss making millionaires and big corporations pay their fair share. In fact House Majority Leader Eric Cantor recently backed out of talks led by Vice President Biden over this point. President Obama is working to craft a budget deal with Democratic and Republican leaders before July 4th. We need Democratic leaders Sen. Harry Reid (NV) and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (CA) to continue to stand strong against crippling cuts to Medicare and education funding, and press to raise needed funds by taxing millionaires and closing tax loopholes for oil companies and other big corporations. So, now is our chance to make a difference by showing our champions that they have the public support to hold their ground. Click here to send a message to Sen. Reid and Rep. Pelosi urging them to keep standing strong. Thanks for standing with us to make sure the rich and powerful pay their fair share, and the rest of us get a fair shot. Green Week and Earth Day, celebrate with actions :) April 19, 2011 6:09 AM

These actions on Disabled Greens News and discussion: Green Week and Earth Day, celebrate with actions: This petition on Green Week, Earth Day, Act: Raise your voice for safe chemicals!: April 18, 2011 Senator: Be our hero, co-sponsor the Safe Chemicals Act of 2011 Today we have exciting news to share; Congress is poised to take a meaningful step to protect you and your family from toxic chemicals. We need your help to make sure your Senators know that fixing the toxic chemicals law is important to American families! We know you're tired of having to worry about which products in your home are safe and which ones may contain toxic chemicals like lead, formaldehyde or dangerous plastic additives. So are we. We believe Americans shouldn't need a Ph.D. in chemistry to make safe purchases at the checkout counter. The just introduced Safe Chemicals Act of 2011 would require chemical makers to prove their chemicals are safe before they are allowed in our homes, schools, and workplaces. Click here to take action! Just as we have laws against people breaking into our homes and threatening our safety, we can have laws against chemical intruders that enter our bodies. Without our knowledge or consent, these toxic intruders put us and our children at risk. Science is linking toxic chemical exposures to all kinds of serious diseases and disorders, including childhood leukemia and brain cancers, breast and testicular cancer, neurological disorders like autism and Alzheimer's, and fertility problems. We need you to tell your Senator to co-sponsor this important piece of legislation. By signing up as a co-sponsor, your Senator can show their commitment to putting common sense limits on toxic chemicals. Will you take a minute to ask them to co-sponsor the Safe Chemicals Act? If you prefer to make a two-minute call to your Senator, please call the Capitol switchboard at: (202) 224-3121. Thanks for your continued support. get out the: vote, rems, filibuster, fix; now! October 28, 2010 6:30 AM

get out the: vote, rems, filibuster, fix; now! Greetings, Actually, ‘the fix is in’ in Congress, the filibuster is just the show behind which dempublicans ask how far when remocrats tell them to bend over; we have to get the vote out and get the fix out of Congress- by getting rid of the filibuster, etc.. I’ve said it in the past, as well, dempublicans are the glove, the puppets, remocrats are the hand, the puppet masters; a dem is a rem whose still haggling over price, when they get it they become rems; if we wanted you to make sausage we wouldn’t have voted you into Congress; they almost sunk this country and the global economy with King George and his Dick Cheney’s insistence on “bipartisanship”, etc., we don’t need to finish the job, we need to get the rems out of office, so they can’t do much more damage; etc.. Yet, we must give the dems the credit that’s due them, and, even though they did practice some politics as usual, they’ve done a lot; and will do much more- if we get the vote out, get the rems out of office, and then get the filibuster out, as well, for starters. The non-rems deserve another shot, let’s get the vote out, for: YOU CAN Talk the talk, walk the walk, and even Be the be, but, if you don't vote the vote, You'll never be livin' in a democracy! DIRECT Fax: Obama, Renounce Trigger For Public Health Care November 02, 2009 4:18 AM

DIRECT Fax: Obama, Renounce Trigger For Public Health Care This Action, on, the url :) fax Obama, no trigger :) "Send A Fax To President Obama To Make Sure The Trigger Is Off The Table :) Dear Friends and Activists, Just how serious do you think WE are about real policy change? ... To show you, we just made a commitment for a quarter of a MILLION fax minutes, and all we are asking you do to is use them up to make real health care change happen. Thanks to a burst of citizen activism over the weekend, the momentum is now swinging in our direction for a strong public health care option. But even though Harry Reid today finally promised to bring forward a partial public option in the Senate, there is no assurance the trigger ruse, intended to make sure none of this ever really happens, won't be revived. In short, we need to speak out now more than ever. Indeed, there were reports over the weekend that President Obama himself was pushing for the trigger scheme behind the scenes. And not even a relatively progressive senator like Sherrod Brown was willing to declare the trigger a deal-breaker. And that is why we created a brand new dedicated fax server to send your fax direct to President Obama at the White House on this, along with messages to all your regular members of Congress. Fax President Obama To Renounce The Trigger :) Now that the stonewall against good public health care policy is starting to crack, now is NOT the time to lay back and take it for granted. Rather now is the most important time ever to really pour it on. Let's flood the White House with more faxes than they've seen in their lives. And when you go through the first 250,000 fax minutes we now control, we'll get more. And because of the extra expense of sending so many faxes like this, and for maximum impact in that format, we are doing something else we have never done before. In this case there is a pre-drafted petition text we've prepared, calling on President Obama to demonstrate the leadership to renounce the trigger gimmick once and for all, and pressing again for passage of true Medicare for All. You can add your own personal comments if you like as well. So please go to the page below. Read the petition text. Yes, it's a strong statement, but it is also suitably respectful. And then with one click at no cost to yourself you can send a personal fax to the White House, and the same message to all your members of Congress too. Fax President Obama To Renounce The Trigger :) The progressive activist community has never had such a robust fax sending capability before. Some of you may have come across right wing sites offering to do a "fax blast" for a charge to you of 25 or 50 dollars PER MESSAGE. We're not charging anything for this. But if you can make a contribution of any amount to help support this work, please pick a wonderful activist gift from the return page after you submit the fax action page. There you will find the "Single Payer Health Care" caps we are using to demonstrate our ongoing, long term commitment to Medicare for All. Pick up the dramatic peace play on audio CD, featuring an extraordinary performance by Ed Asner. There is no donation whatsoever required for that one. Just submit the form and we'll send you one. And here is a link direct to the gift page. All Activist Gifts: And we have a new "350 ppm" cap to support the worldwide movement to bring carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere back down to a safe and sustainable level. We still have the "Convict Dick & W" caps and we promise we'll keep them in stock until the last statute of limitations runs out. Pick up a pocket constitutions commemorative of Dennis Kucinich's valiant presidential primary run while they last, or the DVD of the Bush/Cheney impeachment play produced last summer as a full stage production. It's time to swing for the fences. It's time to set our leaders straight once and for all, that public policy must serve the PUBLIC, not just self-serving corporations out to bribe the system. When they tried to take single payer off the table, they were counting on us not jumping up and howling. And when they tried to tell us that some kind of weak impersonation of a public option was the best they could do they were holding their breath that we wouldn't howl about that. But when we heard this weekend that President Obama himself was favoring and himself pushing for a trigger scheme, designed to make sure no real change of any substance would happen, for a WHOLE lot of people that was the last straw. We're howling now and we're going to keep on howling, louder and louder. And any elected official who thinks they can just keep ignoring the voice of the people will find out very different in their next primary, if not in the general election. And here is the one click Facebook page for this action, if you are already active over there. Renounce A Trigger Action :) And the Twitter reply to send, to send this message to all your members of Congress (and President Obama) that way, is @cxs #p1016 Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible. If you would like to get alerts like these, you can do so at :) " Good Day to you, and thanx for all you do and don't, All. Some sample talking points, etc.. :) No trigger, exactly, because the reality of what happens with triggers, or should I say doesn't happen with triggers, they don't get pulled. [PsychRights] Conference on Stopping Kids Psychiatric Abuse October 13, 2009 11:25 AM

Action, on, the url :) Kids Psychiatric Abuse :) Conference on Stopping the Psychiatric Abuse of Children Huffington Post, September 27, 2009 Dr. Peter Breggin Millions of our children are being labeled with false and stigmatizing psychiatric diagnoses. Then their brains are being blunted and disabled by psychiatric drugs. Want to find a way to do something about the plight of our children at the hands of drug companies and misguided mental health professionals? Want to learn more about what our children really need from us? In less than two weeks, you can attend the annual meeting of the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology ( at the Renaissance Syracuse Hotel. The two-day conference takes place on Friday and Saturday, October 9-10, 2009 in Syracuse, New York. It features international experts on the adverse of effects of psychiatric drugs and better ways of helping children and families. The public is welcome. For the sake of our children, please attend. This year's conference comes at a tragic turning point in the psychiatric abuse of children. In the past, the main threat has come from the widespread use of stimulant drugs like Ritalin, Dexedrine, Adderall, Focalin, and Concerta for children labeled with ADHD. These drugs work by crushing spontaneous behavior. Frequently this leads to depression, as well as insomnia, anxiety and psychosis. The stimulants suppress the growth of children, cause abnormalities in their brains, induce sudden cardiac death, and predispose children to cocaine abuse in young adulthood. As bad as this is, the situation of our children has recently become even more desperate. In the past year, the FDA has unleashed a crisis of epidemic proportions by approving lobotomizing antipsychotic drugs for the control of behavior in children. Diabetes. Pancreatitis. Pathological obesity. The abnormal growth of breast tissue and even lactation in young boys and girls. Heart disease. Permanently disfiguring tics and other abnormal movements (tardive dyskinesia). Agonizing muscle spasms that also defy treatment and last indefinitely (tardive dystonia). These are a few of the drastic disorders caused by antipsychotic drugs such as Zyprexa, Risperdal, Abilify, Seroquel, Geodon, and Invega. The antipsychotic drugs work by flattening the emotions and causing docility, so that the children no longer make trouble, at least for a while. With their frontal lobe function suppressed, the kids become more robotic in their behavior, and their mental and emotional growth is stunted. Often these drugs will turn them into lifelong mental patients whose enslaved brains will continue to deteriorate under toxic assault. Great speakers and workshop presenters will cover these and many other subjects about psychiatry and about how to help children and families in distress with caring and effective psychological, education, and social approaches. Stephen A. Sheller is one of the lead attorneys in two of the largest billion-dollar settlements ever made as a result of civil and criminal actions brought by the federal government against drug companies Pfizer and Eli Lilly. Both legal actions involved psychiatric drugs. I will be honored to introduce attorney Sheller at the conference. As the Founder Emeritus of ICSPP (I've passed the mantle onto younger professionals), I will be making two presentations, one on how to inspire the psychiatric reform movement and another on better approaches to helping children and families. Attorney James Gottstein from Alaska is the world's most active civil rights attorney on behalf of psychiatrically abused children and adults. Graham Dukes, a physician and a lawyer, is a leading expert on international drug regulation. Critiques of ADHD and better approaches to children and families will be presented by many experts in psychiatry, pediatrics, psychology, and education. Registration can be made on-line ( or at the meeting at the Syracuse Renaissance Hotel, Friday and Saturday, October 9-10, 2009. Tickets are available for one or both days. For hotel reservations, call 315-479-7000. If you care about our children, this is the place for you to be. It's always a great and inspiring conference. Even if you don't know anyone else at the conference, you will feel at home. You will meet many new friends with similar concerns. Our children need our protection and support in these dire times. Peter R. Breggin, M.D. is a psychiatrist in private practice in Ithaca, New York. The observations made in this column are scientifically documented in his medical book, Brain-Disabling Treatments in Psychiatry, Second Edition (2008) as well as his popular book, Medication Madness: The Role of Psychiatric Drugs in Cases of Violence, Crime and Suicide (2008). Dr. Breggin's website, loaded with scientific information and interesting radio and TV reports, is On Dr. Breggin's website you can purchase a bonus edition of ICSPP's new book, The Conscience of Psychiatry: The Reform Work of Peter R. ADAPT Acts: Release: talk about Community 1st Choice Option; etc.. September 26, 2009 10:04 AM

ADAPT Acts: Release: talk about Community 1st Choice Option; etc.. This Action, on, the url :) healthcare for autistic :) Media release you can use to talk about the Community First Choice Option :) Here is a media release you and your groups can use to talk about the Community Choice First Option. Feel free to edit and personalize the release, but if you use Senator Schumer's quote, please don't change it. You can and should attribute the other quotes to people from your organization (or change them), because media people are looking for local stories. Be sure to change or add your contact information at the top of the release. It is critical we get the word out to the media. We worked very hard to get this into the healthcare reform bill so we need to make sure it stays in. Media folks should be interested in this because healthcare reform is a hot topic AND previously healthcare reform had not addressed the institutional bias. So this is NEW! Don't worry about whether you know a great deal about the Community First Choice Option. I found the best way to understand it this: The Community Choice Act started with a a five year optional period. This option IS that optional period without the mandate at the end of five years. Whether you feel that you can talk about the policy or not, CALL YOUR MEDIA. You know a great deal about the institutional bias and it's effect on real people. That's stuff the media would be interested in because you make this story personal when you talk about people stuck in nursing facilities and other institutions who want to get out. Again, thanks for all of your hard work! Let's get the word out so we can assure we get to keep this victory! FREE OUR PEOPLE! On behalf of the amazing ADAPT Community, Bruce ************************ For Immediate Release: September 23, 2009 Contact: Mike Oxford (785) 224-3865 Marsha Katz (406) 544-9504 Bob Kafka (512) 431-4085 Disability Rights Advocates praise Senator Baucus and other key Senators for addressing the institutional bias in Senate healthcare reform legislation Washington, DC - ADAPT, a national grassroots disability rights organization, praised Senator Baucus of Montana for including the Community First Choice Option in his healthcare reform legislation. If enacted, the Community First Choice Option would be an optional program that gives states an enhanced federal Medicaid match for providing attendant services and supports as an alternative to placement in a nursing facility or other institution. The Community First Choice Option was proposed as an amendment by Senator Charles Schumer of New York and was included in the Chairman's Mark which automatically incorporates the language in the legislation. "The elderly and disabled should not have to choose between staying in their home and receiving the care they need," said Schumer. "I am gratified that the Finance Committee agreed to include a provision that will take steps towards providing home care for those in need, and I will continue fighting until no one has to choose between their health and their home." ADAPT groups from across the country praised the announcement. "This is an incredible step forward toward eliminating the institutional bias," said Marsha Katz of Montana ADAPT which is based in Missola, Montana. "The aging and disability communities owe a debt of gratitude to Senator Baucus and Senator Schumer for addressing this critical issue as a part of healthcare reform." Advocates also recognized Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa for his efforts to give seniors and people with disabilities an alternative to placement in an institution or nursing facility. Harkin has been the lead sponsor for the Community Choice Act (S683/HR1670). This legislation would eliminate the institutional bias and served as the basis for the state option proposal. "For years, Senator Harkin has been a champion on this issue," said Mike Oxford from the ADAPT group in Topeka, Kansas. "During the last few months, we have watched in awe as he put in countless hours to advocate for our cause." Advocates also praised other initiatives in the Chairman's Mark that addressed long term services and supports by broadening the eligibility requirements for the Money Follows the Person Demonstration Program and addressing problems with spousal impoverishment in community-based services. Health care reform in trouble :) June 26, 2009 11:56 PM

Health care reform in trouble :) Please, Health care reform in trouble, do whatever you can, advocate, et al :) This Action, on, the url :) Healthcare trouble :) Health care reform is in trouble in the Senate :) Conservatives in Congress, including some Democrats, are trying to kill Obama's public health insurance option not by opposing it outright, but by pushing weak half-measures and calling them "public plans."1 The latest is a proposal for small, regional "co-ops" that would have no chance of competing against insurance companies to bring costs down.2 If we act immediately, we have a good shot at defeating ploys like the "co-op." The key is to make it clear that we support a strong public health insurance option and lay out exactly what that means. Click below and we'll fax a flier in your name (for free!) to Sens. Conrad and Dorgan that sets the bar for a strong public health insurance option. Faxes come directly into the office, so staffers are guaranteed to see them. And if enough of us send faxes, staffers will pass the flier on to their senator. It's up to us to remind our senators that an overwhelming majority of Americans—83%—supports a public health insurance option,3 and that weak half-measures like the "co-op" plan are no substitute for real reform. The flier says: "A strong public health insurance option must be part of health care reform this year," and outlines key criteria that a plan must be based upon: Available to all of us: A strong public health insurance option should be available to anyone who chooses to participate. If you like your current plan, you can keep it; if you want to participate in the public health insurance plan, you can choose that. A national plan with real bargaining clout: In order to truly control costs and compete with private health insurance plans, a strong public health insurance option must be available nationwide. Ready on day one: Every day we wait on real reform, health care costs continue to rise. A strong public health insurance option with a broad network of providers right out of the gate is key to building a competitive program that will help control costs. A truly public plan: To ensure it's held to the highest standards of accountability, a public health insurance option must be truly publicly run—accountable and transparent to Congress and to voters. If thousands of us send faxes to Senate offices this week, we can make sure that message is heard loud and clear. Can you fax Sens. Conrad and Dorgan today? Click below and we'll send one for you: Thanks for all that you do. –Patrick S., Kat, Justin, Wes, and the rest of the team Sources: 1. "A Public Health Plan," The New York Times, June 21, 2009. 2. These actions, on, the url :) medicaid fraud :) [PsychRights] Massive Medicaid Fraud Exposed: PsychRights Calls on Members of Congress for Assistance :) NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Jim Gottstein 907-274-7686 Massive Medicaid Fraud Exposed: PsychRights Calls on Members of Congress for Assistance In letters to Senators Charles Grassley and Herb Kohl, and Representatives Henry Waxman, Bart Stupak, John Dingell & Barney Frank, the Law Project for Psychiatric Rights (PsychRights) has exposed massive Medicaid Fraud. While working on PsychRights v. Alaska, its lawsuit to prohibit the State of Alaska from the largely ineffective and always harmful psychiatric drugging of children and youth, PsychRights "discovered that it is illegal for the vast bulk of these prescriptions to be reimbursed by Medicaid." Extrapolating from Alaska Medicaid Claims, PsychRights calculates over $2 Billion in fraudulent claims are being paid nationally every year for drug treatments Congress has explicitly prohibited, and it is probably well over $4.5 Billion, based on the total amount paid by Medicaid. Stating the carnage caused by the practice will be "recognized as the largest iatrogenic (doctor caused) public health disaster in history," PsychRights analogized the situation, "to our current economic debacle caused by unrestrained Wall Street greed," but noted, it is much worse, " because children's and youth's future, health, and even lives, have been sacrificed and continue to be sacrificed on the altar of corporate profits." Also, "because most current child psychiatrists no longer know how to help children and youth without resort to the drugs" PsychRights suggests "the savings be used to fund approaches that have been proven to be safe and effective." Supreme Court Vacancy Provides President Opportunity to Nominate Strong Voice for Reproductive Rights May 1, 2009 NEW YORK - Today, news reports surfaced that Supreme Court Justice David Souter plans to retire at the end of the term in June. The Center for Reproductive Rights urges President Obama and Congress to ensure that candidates named to replace him will affirm recognized constitutional rights, including women’s right to choose an abortion. According to Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, “Justice Souter has been a consistent supporter of abortion rights. His departure provides a critical opportunity for the President to nominate someone who has a strong understanding of and voice on the realities of women’s lives and to deliver on his stated commitment to nominate justices with ‘empathy,’ who understand the real life experiences of people.” The last Supreme Court decision on abortion, Gonzales v. Carhart, was 5 to 4 and diluted the protections previously afforded to women’s reproductive health. “Any new Justice appointed to the Court should also understand that reproductive rights are fundamental rights based on the understanding of the importance of reproductive health and reproductive self-determination to women’s lives,” said Northup. “These principles are at the core of a woman’s fundamental well-being and place in the world.” Continued Northup, “Since Justice David Souter joined the bench in 1990, there’s been a substantial shift in the acceptance and protection of reproductive rights worldwide. More countries, courts, and human rights bodies around the world have recognized that reproductive rights are human rights. Even countries that have historically neglected women’s reproductive health and freedom have affirmed that women’s health is vital to their societies’ health and committed to justice. “With the Court’s last 5–4 decision, the protection for women’s constitutional right to abortion is precarious. Childhood is not a disease January 11, 2009 10:41 PM

Childhood is not a disease Letters to the editor: The Patriot Ledger How many more Rebecca Rileys? To diagnose a 2-year-old as bipolar by adult standards is crazy By Jacob Azerrad Jan 10, 2009 QUINCY — In a 2007 “60 Minutes” episode, Katie Couric focused on the short life of 4-year-old Rebecca Riley of Hull. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 3, she was dead one year later from an overdose of a psychotropic drug cocktail. At one point, Couric asks Rebecca’s mother, who has been charged with her daughter’s murder, if she thinks her child’s behavior might have been normal. That in fact, maybe little Rebecca was just exhibiting Terrible Two’s behavior. Couric might well ask mental health professionals: Whatever happened to the Terrible Two’s? We use a medical model developed by Freud, not a behavioral model, to measure behavior. Freud believed that if a behavior works, it’s healthy, and if it doesn’t, it’s sick. So if a 3-year-old is drawing inside the lines of the coloring book, parents don’t have a thing to worry about, but if he or she is drawing on the wallpaper, the stage is set for a clinical diagnosis. And there’s a pill to fix it. There are pills for yelling, biting, throwing, kicking, cursing, punching, name-calling and lying. There are pills for whispering in class, for when grandma dies and for bad habits. There are pills for daydreaming. There’s a big difference between using medicines to treat genuine mental illness and designing new drugs to medicate perfectly healthy children. Today, as the mental health industry systematically pathologizes more and more childhood behavior, we see a raft of drugs aimed at “curing” them. But the medical model of behavior overshot its target. Now it’s treating learned responses as though they were diseases, and almost all human behavior is based on learned responses. Studies in the 1970s and ’80s concluded bipolar disorder was rare in children, but between 1994 to 2003, there was an astounding 40-fold increase diagnosing bipolar disorder in children. Children as young as Rebecca are now given powerful drugs not approved for children. In Massachusetts alone, from 1988 to 2003, the prescription of stimulants, antidepressants and anti-psychotics given to children rose more than 300 percent, and the number of teenage users is even greater. From 1993 through the first three months of last year, 1,207 children who were given Risperdal suffered serious problems, including 31 who died. Among the deaths was a 9-year-old who suffered a fatal stroke 12 days after starting therapy with Risperdal. A key issue is the misuse of psychiatric diagnostic labels to explain bad behavior in children. This has resulted in the drugging of young children to a degree unprecedented in our history. To diagnose a 2-year-old as bipolar by adult standards is crazy. The behavior of a 2-year-old is filled with curiosity about everything and anything. The young child has extraordinary ability in terms of emotions and cognitions. They can be very upset very quickly, very angry, very depressed, because their emotions are so fluid, so available. When a guy in the Terrible 50s tries to diagnose the Terrible Two’s on an adult level, that is craziness and dangerous. By prescribing strong medicines instead of teaching children new choices using proven behavioral methods, we short-circuit a child’s learning process and, even worse, lay the tracks for a lifetime habit of responding to challenge and disappointment with avoidance, denial and chemical dependency. Growing up is not a condition. Childhood is not a disease. Children act up and defy authority and they need adults to teach them how to manage difficult feelings and handle disappointment appropriately. There are ways for parents to do this that are quite effective and don’t involve drugs, but they do involve parents being teachers. Our preschool children are far too young to defend themselves. It’s up to parents to “say no to drugs” and teach their children that life is meant to be learned and experienced – it’s not just a pill to be swallowed. Soldiers Dropping from Psych Drugs- Families November 15, 2008 1:12 AM

Soldiers Dropping from Psych Drugs - Families Want Publicity - You can help! Help the families of these soliders. Send the below article to everyone you know. And also send it to your local legisltors and veteran's groups. "I believe there are many more soldiers and Marines who have died in their sleep just like the four in West Virginia," said Mr. White, a retired high school principal. "I think what we have found is just the tip of the iceberg, but we need more national publicity to help us find others who have lost loved ones and are looking for answers." Washington Times EXCLUSIVE: After death of son, dad takes cases to Capitol Hill HURRICANE, W.Va. Andrea Billups and Audrey Hudson Thursday, November 13, 2008 A West Virginia man whose son survived the battlefields of Iraq only to die in his sleep at home is crusading to find other military families whose loved ones also have died after taking drugs prescribed for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Stan White's son Andrew, who was found dead in bed at the family's Cross Lanes, W.Va., home on Feb. 12, 2007, is one among a cluster of young veterans in the state who have died in their sleep with little explanation. Now Mr. White wants the federal government to monitor the drugs it prescribes to some 375,000 soldiers who have been diagnosed with mental trauma. Shirley White of Cross Lanes, Andrew's mother, says she and her husband want an investigation into the medications prescribed to their son and other veterans who died. So far, he has identified nine veterans across the country - including four in West Virginia - who have died in their sleep after taking antidepressant and antipsychotic medications. Mr. White has met with members of Congress and asked for Capitol Hill hearings to investigate the deaths. His research prompted a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) investigation into Andrew's and one other death, which were found to have been caused by "combined drug intoxication." But the investigation could not determine whether the prescribed medications were at fault. The father is taking up the crusade amid increased criticism of VA medical treatment of veterans suffering PTSD upon their return from Iraq or Afghanistan, including media and government reports that several VA centers failed to adequately care for patients and inform them of potentially dangerous drug side effects. Finding out why his son died and keeping others from suffering a similar fate has become a personal cause for Mr. White. "Our goal was to find out if the medications are safe," said Mr. White, who, with his wife, continues to grieve the loss of his son. "If they are, that needs to be publicized. But if they are not, that also needs to be publicized as well. "I believe there are many more soldiers and Marines who have died in their sleep just like the four in West Virginia," said Mr. White, a retired high school principal. "I think what we have found is just the tip of the iceberg, but we need more national publicity to help us find others who have lost loved ones and are looking for answers." The VA's Office of Inspector General conducted a review of the quality of care received by Marine Cpl. Andrew White and another veteran whose name was not made public but whom The Washington Times was able to identify as Army National Guard Sgt. Eric Layne, an Iraq war veteran. According to the Aug. 14 findings, the two combat veterans were taking three prescribed psychiatric medications: • Paroxetine - an antidepressant that can produce panic attacks, sleeping problems and suicidal thoughts. • Clonazepam - an anticonvulsive that should not be used with alcohol or other drugs, including narcotics or barbiturates. • Quetiapine - an antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia but, combined with clonazepam, can increase sedative effects. "The medical examiner found that these patients died from combined drug intoxication involving prescribed and nonprescribed medications," the report said. "In the presence of PTSD, other mental health conditions, and uncertain use of medications by patients, we are unable to draw conclusions about the relationship between medication regimens and these deaths." The report said Cpl. White "died as a result of combined drug intoxication," including a nonprescribed medication that the IG declined to identify. "No contributory natural diseases or physical injuries were identified," the report said. Sgt. Layne died as a result of the VA-prescribed drugs and two unidentified nonprescribed medications, "under circumstances significant for fatal over-use of prescribed paroxetine" along with "apparent misuse of nonprescribed medications of uncertain intentionality." The VA conducted an agencywide analysis of all cases of death among veterans who were taking a combination of the same drugs and "found no high mortality rate in veterans in the referenced group compared to those taking other similar psychotropic combinations or veterans taking the single agents," said VA spokeswoman Alison Aikele, who did not specify the death rate. Nevertheless, a California neurologist who contacted Mr. White after reading about his efforts to investigate the veterans' deaths in a local newspaper article, expressed alarm over seemingly healthy young veterans suddenly dying in their sleep. "The drugs and the occurrence there in the four vets in West Virginia really jumps out at you," said Dr. Fred Baughman of El Cajon, Calif. "They are seemingly OK, and then they go to bed and they die in their sleep. "The constant drugs that all four of them are on are the Paxil [paroxetine] and Seroquel [quetiapine]," said Dr. Baughman, who has long had his own concerns about PTSD drug prescriptions in the military. Miss Aikele said it is not unusual for veterans suffering PTSD to be prescribed several psychotropic drugs for various symptoms,....  [ send green star]
Half of Nursing Home Residents Wrongly Drugged September 27, 2008 10:41 AM

Half of Nursing Home Residents Wrongly Drugged What's a black-box warning? So named because of the black border that surrounds it on the drug label, it's the FDA-required disclosure that a drug can have serious or life-threatening side effects. Antipsychotic drugs Abilify, Geodon, Risperdal, Seroquel and Zyprexa have black box warnings which you can see here: " I would pay careful attention to antipsychotic medications. ... these drugs are being used extensively off-label in nursing homes to sedate elderly patients..."St. Petersburg Times, November 18, 2007 Dr. David Graham, FDA drug safety expert, testifying at a congressional hearing[Off label - the use of a drug for which there is no FDA approval.] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Letters to the editor: dtletters@... The Daily Telegraph Half of nursing home residents wrongly druggedLondon, EnglandBy Kate Devlin - Medical Correspondent Sep 9, 2008 Experts who looked at 22 nursing homes found 51 per cent of residents were being inappropriately given drugs, including anti-psychotics, antidepressants and painkillers. More than 420,000 people live in care and nursing homes in Britain, of which around 405,000 are elderly. Previous estimates have suggested that 100,000 residents, suffering from dementia, were being drugged unnecessarily every year. However, if the results of this study are replicated across the country, it suggests that around 200,000 patients are being given inappropriate medication in homes. Some elderly folks simply prefer to keep busy, scoff at antipsychotic drugs and shoo away shrinks Paul Burstow, the Liberal Democrat MP, said: "This adds to the growing evidence that inappropriate medicating in care homes is much more routine in practice than we would like to believe. "And when it comes to the prescribing of anti-psychotics, these drugs are actually killing people. The Government must come up with concrete proposals to crack down on this problem." Mr Burstow has previously called for GPs who overprescribe to patients in homes to face prosecution. The use of anti-psychotics has become increasingly controversial in recent years after they were linked to strokes. A report released last year suggested that the drugs could be responsible for more than 23,000 deaths in care homes every year. Lizzie McLennan, from Help the Aged, said that "too many" elderly people were being drugged in care homes. She called for GPs to be forced to make regular visits to care homes for which they prescribe and for routine reviews of residents' medication. The nursing homes study shows that when pharmacists reviewed the medication residents had been prescribed 171 out of 334 were receiving drugs that they did not need. The findings, by researchers at Queen's University in Belfast and Brown University in Rhode Island, were presented at the British Pharmaceutical Conference in Manchester. Another study also presented at the conference shows that staff at nursing homes believed that the culture in a home could lead to over prescribing and patients receiving powerful drugs they did not need "to make life easier". The Government has ordered a review into inappropriate prescribing in care homes, which is due to report later in the autumn. Critics say that problems can arise because some GPs visit care homes only rarely and rely on issuing repeat prescriptions from one year to the next, and because of the commercial relationship that can exist between GPs and homes. Anti-psychotic drugs are not licensed to treat dementia but are commonly prescribed to control agitation, sleep disturbance and aggression in sufferers in care homes, previous studies have shown. PsychRights Acts: Sues AK to Stop Massive Psych Drug kids; etc.. September 07, 2008 6:31 AM

PsychRights Acts: Sues AK to Stop Massive Psych Drug kids; etc.. PsychRights Sues State of Alaska to Stop Its Massive, HarmfulPsychiatric Drugging of Alaskan Children NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 2, 2008 CONTACT: Jim Gottstein 907-274-7686 PsychRights Sues State of Alaska to Stop Its Massive, Harmful Psychiatric Drugging of Alaskan Children Today the Law Project for Psychiatric Rights (PsychRights) announced that due to the State of Alaska's unwillingness, or inability, to enter into substantive talks, it has filed its lawsuit against the State of Alaska and officials responsible for the excessive, ineffective, and extremely harmful psychiatric drugging of Alaskan children and youth. The lawsuit seeks an injunction stopping the practice of Alaska authorizing or paying for psychotropic drugs to be given children without safeguards being in place to make sure proper decision making occurs. Jim Gottstein, the president of PsychRights and the attorney bringing the lawsuit, said, "The corrupt influence of the pharmaceutical industry in illegally promoting much of this psychiatric drugging of children has been well established, yet the State of Alaska continues to inflict great harm on the children it has taken away from their families by giving them these drugs." It is ludicrous that the State sued a drug company for fraud in hiding the harm caused by one of these drugs and still gives that same drug and other toxic drugs like it, to children. Dr. Karen Effrem, pediatrician and board member of the Alliance for Human Research Protection (AHRP) and the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology (ICSPP), said, "These dangerous and ineffective drugs are tragically overused to merely control behavior of children who are distraught about being taken away from their families. Missing one's family or reacting to trauma are wrongly labeled as biological brain disorders that need treatment with powerful medications. Drugs will not put their families back together or help them overcome their trauma and grief. These brain and body damaging pharmaceuticals compound the abuse and trauma. To paraphrase a popular motivational saying, what these kids truly need are 'hugs, not drugs; hope not dope,' (even legal dope)" Governor Palin is one of the defendants because, as governor, she is ultimately responsible for the protection of the children of Alaska, but Mr. Gottstein noted, "I doubt anyone on Governor Palin's staff has even let her know about the problem of the State harming Alaskan children through excessive psychiatric drugging despite my trying to bring it to her attention ever since she came into office." "I know Governor Palin has been focused on the very pressing issue of freeing Alaska, and the nation for that matter, from Big Oil's stranglehold on the trillions of cubic feet of North Slope natural gas the nation needs from reaching the people that need it," Mr. Gottstein continued, "but Alaska's children also deserve her attention. We know that Governor Palin is very compassionate about the needs of children with problems and it is hard to imagine she would turn her back on them if she knew about it." If, as Governor Palin told the nation on Friday, Alaska has enough money to build the Bridge to Nowhere if it wants to (which it does), it certainly has the money to provide the vital services for these vulnerable children sought by PsychRights in the lawsuit. These best practices have been proven far more effective and are far less harmful than drugging kids and were assembled by the Critical ThinkRx Program, under the auspices of and funded by a grant from the Attorneys General Consumer and Prescriber Grant Program of which the Alaska Attorney General is member. Mr. Gottstein concluded by saying, "It is outrageous that the Commissioner of the Department of Health and Services wanted to talk with PsychRights about what might be done to avoid the lawsuit, but wasn't allowed to do so by the Attorney General's Office." For those who would like more information, in addition to the Complaint, there is a set of Questions and Answers about the lawsuit and Mr. Gottstein is scheduled to speak October 10th on "Critical ThinkRx and PsychRights' Lawsuit Against the State of Alaska's Psychiatric Drugging of Children" at the ICSPP conference being held October 10-12, in Tampa Florida. FDA Faulted / Human Drug Experimentation- Unapproved Uses, Drugs August 04, 2008 2:37 PM

FDA Faulted for Human Drug Experimentation - Unapproved Uses of Drugs Off-label: the use of drugs to treat conditions other than the ones the drugs were FDA approved for Example: Geodon is a powerful antipsychotic drug. Against its own Medicaid rules, Florida wasted nearly $6.5 million tax payer dollars from 2003-2007 for this drug on kids despite the fact this drug is not FDA approved for children at all. Short clip here: Here is a snapshot (2005) of what Florida Medicaid was allowed to pay regarding antipsychotic drugs on children: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press FDA faulted over unapproved uses of medications By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR July 27, 2008 WASHINGTON — When a state trooper pulls over a speeding motorist, the officer usually writes out a ticket on the spot. When federal regulators catch a drug company peddling prescription medications for an unapproved use, it takes them an average of seven months to issue a warning, according to a draft report by congressional investigators. It typically takes four more months for the company to fix the problem. During that time, a lot prescriptions can be written. The report from the Government Accountability Office delves into a gray area of medical practice and federal oversight: the use of medications to treat conditions other than the ones the drugs were approved for, a practice known as "off-label" prescribing. Although widely accepted, off-label prescribing can amount to an uncontrolled experiment. While some patients benefit, others get drugs that do not do them much good and end up wasting their money. Some people have been harmed by unexpected side effects. What makes the practice so difficult to get a handle on is a web of seemingly contradictory laws and regulations. Drug companies are forbidden to promote medications for uses that have not been validated by the Food and Drug Administration on evidence from clinical trials. Doctors, however, can use their own independent judgment in prescribing medicines. Also, under guidance proposed by the FDA this year, drug companies could distribute to doctors scientific articles that suggest new and unapproved uses for medications. The situation has raised concerns for Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, who fears that federal programs such as Medicare and Medicaid are paying billions for medications used for questionable purposes while bulking up the bottom line for pharmaceutical companies. Indeed, a 2006 study suggested that more than 20 percent of prescriptions written in the United States are for off-label use. The review that Grassley requested by the investigative arm of Congress found that the FDA is ill-equipped to catch even blatant marketing abuses by drug companies. The agency does not have any staff exclusively assigned to monitor whether companies are following the rule against marketing drugs for unapproved uses. The FDA "isn't keeping track of how drugs are marketed for off-label use, even though marketing for off-label use is illegal and it's the FDA's job to enforce that law," Grassley said in a statement. "As a result, drug makers aren't being held accountable for promoting unapproved use of medicine and patient safety is diminished." Instead, the job is handled by the office that oversees all drug advertising, including television commercials and magazine ads. That office has 44 full-time employees assigned to review ads. Last year, they had to dissect the fine print on some 68,000 advertisements. The office tries to set priorities, by focusing first on misrepresentations that could have a damaging impact on human health. But the report found that the FDA lacks a system for tracking all the material it receives. From 2003-2007, the office issued 42 notices of possible violations, which usually prompted the drug maker to drop its promotional claims. The cases included a drug approved for breast cancer and rectal cancer that also was being promoted for treatment of gastric, cervical, uterine, ovarian, renal, bladder, thyroid and liver cancers. An additional 11 cases involving off-label promotions wound up in the hands of the Justice Department during the same period. Last year, for example, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. agreed to pay the government more than $500 million to settle claims involving a series of alleged infractions, including promoting the drug Abilify — approved to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder — for treatment of dementia-related psychosis and for use in treating children. State of Confusion: Pol. Manipulation + Assault on Mind June 13, 2008 2:44 PM

State of Confusion: Political Manipulation and the Assault on the American Mind - New Book by Dr. Bryant Welch Dear Colleagues, From time to time, we at PsyBC like to provide you with information regarding special products and events that you may be interested in. Please take the time to read about this wonderful new book by Dr. Bryant Welch entitled State of Confusion: Political Manipulation and the Assault on the American Mind. More Info Book Description Finally, the answer to the many questions that have been preying on the minds of millions of Americans has arrived. Why are Americans so vulnerable to divisive political tactics? Why did Americans get dragged into such an unwise war in Iraq? Why do fundamentalist religious groups, Fox News, and right- wing radio still play such influential roles in America's political landscape? And why are long-accepted rational scientific ideas like evolution under siege? These questions hold America's future in the balance. Ultimately, they are questions about the American mind. Psychologist-attorney Dr. Bryant Welch has the answers. If America is going to change the mind-set that led us to war in Iraq and left us unable to confront our serious national problems, this book is vitally important. Drawing on his unique experience both as a clinical psychologist and a Washington, D.C., political figure with the American Psychological Association, Dr. Welch shows how the long-term effects of sophisticated new forms of political manipulation have not only led to our debacle in Iraq but are also currently undercutting America's ability to address its very serious problems. In the 1944 movie Gaslight, a husband drives his wife to the brink of insanity by playing games with her sense of reality. Just as in the movie, America's most recent political "gaslighters," such as George W. Bush, Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and many religious leaders, have generated and exploited confusion in the minds of countless Americans. Gaslighters prey on their victim's vulnerability to paranoia, sexual perplexity, and envy to undermine the mind's ability to function rationally. Welch examines why millions of Americans, in response to such assaults, subconsciously and dangerously create their own simplistic reality, even if it is completely different from the more complex reality of the world. Most important, State of Confusion explains how and why Americans must act now to fight back against this harmful manipulation before it's too late. Dr. Welch's exploration of the American mind is both fascinating and frightening, and State of Confusion is a must- read for everyone who cares about the future of this great country. Buy it Here Advance Praise for State of Confusion Robert Shrum, senior strategist of the Gore and Kerry presidential campaigns and author of No Excuses: Concessions of a Serial Campaigner "Bryant Welch makes a fascinating and compelling case that right-wing politics has subverted our democracy by infecting us with a form of national political neurosis. This book unmasks the politics of fear---the deeper chords touched by campaigns that appeal to the dark side." Laurence H. Tribe, Carl M. Loeb University Professor, Harvard Law School "Bryant Welch was born to write this vitally important and highly readable investigation of how a cadre of ethically challenged political operatives and their religious and journalistic allies have gradually distorted and disabled the minds of ordinary Americans-and have all but crippled the once- extraordinary mind of America. It is not too late for us to reclaim our identity, but we will succeed only if we take to heart the lessons so lucidly laid bare by the remarkable work of this insightful psychologist and experienced political activist." Dr. Harold I. Eist, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry, George Washington University, and former president of the American Psychiatric Association "State of Confusion is intense, clear, logical, and striking in its message. It will grab you emotionally and intellectually, the message cannot be missed, Bryant Welch sees through the smoke and mirrors and offers the only remedy that will place democracy firmly in the grip of the people from whom it is being stolen: the truth." Nancy McWilliams, Ph.D., president of the Division of Psychoanalysis, American Psychological Association, and professor, Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology "Dr. Welch is a master of making complex psychological concepts understandable and using them to explain the disturbing political climate of our time. This beautifully written, urgently relevant work should be on the bookshelf of everyone who cares about the survival of American democracy." Lewis P. Lipsitt, Ph.D., professor of psychology, emeritus, Brown University "[State of Confusion] is a unique and successful effort to understand the machinations of politicians and others who have significant influence on others. With professional credentials in both law and psychology, Dr. Bryant Welch is ideally suited to raise the issues - fascinating reading." Forcing Psychiatric Drugs Can Increase Violence Warns Task Force April 02, 2008 1:43 AM

"Forcing Psychiatric Drugs Can Increase Violence," Warns New Task Force on Mental Health Legal Advocacy & Activism For immediate release: NEWS RELEASE 4 March 2008 Media contacts: Krista Erickson - 541-345-9106 Daniel Hazen - 315-528-3385 "Forcing Psychiatric Drugs Can Increase Violence," Warns New Task Force on Mental Health Legal Advocacy & Activism Promising to fight what they call pervasive and harmful violations of mental health clients who are involuntarily drugged and electroshocked in the United States, The Law Project for Psychiatric Rights (PsychRights) and the MindFreedom Shield Campaign announced today a joint Task Force on Mental Health Legal Advocacy & Activism. The new partnership of law and nonviolent direct action has an initial focus in the states of California, Massachusetts and New York. PsychRights' President Jim Gottstein declared, "People's rights in forced drugging proceedings are ignored as a matter of course, resulting in great harm to them and decreased public safety." David Oaks, Director of MindFreedom International (MFI), noted, "Violence by a few individuals labeled 'mentally ill' has led to a backlash calling for a massive increase in forced psychiatric drugging." Mr. Gottstein added, "Contrary to public perception, forcing people to take psychiatric drugs can often increase violence, rather than decrease it. If people were warned that both taking and withdrawing from these drugs can at times contribute to committing terrible acts, they and their loved ones can be alert to the possibility and tragedies averted." Krista Erickson, MFI board member and Chair of the MFI Shield Campaign, said, "I'm excited about MFI and PsychRights expanding our partnership and focusing the combined power of legal advocacy and activism on specific cases." The MFI Shield Campaign supports the wishes of a member to be free of involuntary mental health intervention with an international "Solidarity Network" of advocates. The new Task Force plans to use both the court of law and the court of public opinion. Task Force organizers say the combination of PsychRights' expertise for strategic litigation and the "people power" of MindFreedom activists around the country will bring a synergy and geographic reach to their demands for people's legal and human rights. Daniel Hazen, Northeast Coordinator with PsychRights, added, "In the United States the 'mental health' industry is a labeling system that often dismisses self- determination, legal capacity and alternatives. 'Treatment' can be forced through the court systems. People ought to 'have their day in court' but this is often far from what actually occurs." MFI is an independent nonprofit coalition defending human rights and promoting humane alternatives in mental health. The Law Project for Psychiatric Rights is a public interest law firm devoted to the defense of people facing what they call the "horrors of unwarranted forced psychiatric drugging and other forced psychiatric procedures." Social and inter-cultural topics and psychological health January 24, 2008 8:54 AM

Many of you know that I am a supporter for North American Indians, especially Lakota (Sioux) for more than 10 years. The main focus is on linguistic preservation, suicide prevention and introduction of charitable projects of Native Americans and First Peoples. My name is Evelin Cervenkova and I am the founder of the Lakota Oyate Information homepage in East-Germany. I am the first who introduces the Lakota language on German homepages: You can find these German Lakota language homepages at: These Lakota language homepages are recommended by the director of the Lakota Student Alliance and the Lakota Elder Leonard Little Finger (the great-great grandson of Chief Big Foot). HP of Leonard Little Finger: I am the only one who writes on German homepages about suicide prevention: This German hompeage concerns “Spiritual Warrior Vision - Experiential Psychotherapy“: I have also an English homepage about suicide prevention of Native Americans Also I am a member of the network for psychological health and self- help groups in Saxony. German information you can find at: My Native American link list offers many current information about North American Indians in English at: Since 1st October 2007 I am working in the House Steinstrasse Association(English: stone street) in Leipzig as project manager for social-cultural matters and I am responsible for the public relations (press releases). The House Steinstrasse is a charitable association for education, culture and contacts. German information at: http: // In the projects are promoted positive social abilities of children and young people. The house Steinstrasse is open for several generations and you can visit there the roof theatre, roof cinema, the cafe Yellow and courses for adults. Some weeks ago I helped to prepare the exhibition "Afroball", a violence prevention project for children and young people. From the 4th to the 8th of November this exhibition was to seen in Leipzig. The project manager is a certificate psychologist and spent his childhood in Angola. I had invited the manager of UNICEF in Leipzig, I had informed hoards, schools, kindergartens, lecturers of the institute of Afrikanistic and Leipzig television. You can find German information about Mateus Fernandes and his violence and addiction prevention project at: On 28th and 29th November I took part in Hamburg in the meeting of the members of the Association of German Educational Organizations. English information at: The meeting was about political education for youth, adults and immigrants. In the future the education should be strengthened against right-wing extremism. In addition, it is offered to work off the German division and GDR history. The association is disappointed that are not interested East Germans in it. On Thursday morning (29th November) should be spoken about the educational situation in the individual federal states of Germany. From a few East Germans who were present I was the only one from Saxony. I reported about the action "Five for Leipzig". German information at: kampagne.html Sociocultural institutions like the House Steinstrasse in Leipzig receive only 1.8% of the cultural budget, although about one million people visit our institutions. Also about one million people visit opera, theatre, the concert house etc. These cultural institutions receive 98% from the cultural budget, although just so many people use our sociocultural buildings. Therefore, we demand 5% of the cultural budget. - - - - - At the moment I am preparing the 13-th children youth art exhibition. The presentation and exhibition opening takes place on the 12th January 2008 in the Cafe of the Leipzig art museum. Welcome + thanx for your sharing :) October 08, 2007 4:29 AM

Dear Alice, et al, Gutten hagen. Cool, thanx for replying! I hope you and yours are well and will continue to be. Glad to hear it, and I hope it works out for all. Thought and feeling :) Envisioning the Beauty way, on the red road, as well, I'm listening to Orleans :) Reach, Waking and Dreaming, and their wondrous anti-nuke song; bellisimo! Et tu? Flying with the light and life. Pour vous :) An ancient/future Zen monk relayed that he dreamed he was a butterfly, and when he awakened he wondered if he was a butterfly dreaming he was a human being. Yes, and yet, as Dune relates, "the sleeper must awaken"; though, also, must the dreamer :) When, "on the road to find out", as Cat Stevens sings, our visions do arise to, the "beacon in the sky meant to catch our eye", as Happy Rhodes evokes! So, too, we keep in mind that, you've paid for the extinction the corporate structure is dictating take place by collaborating in their plans, with your tax dollars at minimum, and by thinking you're abdicating your responsibility when you continually abdicate your power to politicians, although you can't. It's not too late to take back the day, by turning 360 degrees around, back to the evolution, dispelling the convolutions devolutionary direction; and getting back to the future, we'll only have if you do! By the by, still, "la machine", the corporate structure, and their ever increasing and increasingly interlocking systems of premeditated mass-destruction-murdering programs are all just linx in the chains on humanity, attempting to stop us from breaking free, we can break the chain of murder, the chain of death; by abolishing the over use of fossil fuels and being most alive! That's also why I think allowing evolution as a common language, as it's the thread that links every, in the fabric of life, is a good place to start. For, the corporate structure has made a trap of this world, yet, all life is in it, so "we..." can't underestimate our responsibility; that generations past have heaped on our heads and shoulders by not acting on theirs, then. Dylan Thomas' poem's line comes to mind :) "...and death (murder) shall have no dominion...", as others might say, "we, the people..." can make it so! Will you? By the by, "In Germany they [the Nazis] came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up. - Pastor Martin Niemoeller, 1946", so the story goes, though, you might know that they actually came first for the mentally ill, elderly, handicapped, diffabled, foreigners, poor (Gypsies, Roma, et al); homeless, like the republicans are doing now. Defend yourself by defending them, one for all, all for one! Remember the lessons of WWII, if you're not taking bullets, you're making them, etc.; I'm bleeding every moment, are you? Leonard has edited and contributed to books which include: The History of Shock Treatment, Influencing Minds, and Random House Webster's Quotationary. The above is what Leonard submitted, but it doesn't begin to properly credit him. Leonard is a giant in the movement and a personal hero of mine. So, in looking around for more to say about him, I found the following in Toxic Psychiatry, by Dr. Peter Breggin (1994): Leonard Frank also has debated shock doctors at their meetings and has written The History of Shock Treatment (1978) as well as the recently published comprehensive critique of ECT, Electroshock: Death, Brain Damage, Memory Loss, and Brainwashing. He was a founder of the national patients rights movement and remains a heartening example to hundreds of survivors. Shock advocates frequently suggest that the eloquence of survivors like Leonard Frank is evidence that shock is not permanently damaging. I have known Leonard, and several other eloquent survivors, for almost twenty years, and I can vouch for the struggles they have undergone to recover as much as possible from the damage. These individuals are living proof of the capacity of the human being to triumph over brain damage and dysfunction. It seems cruel and self-serving for shock promoters to deny both their suffering and their heroic efforts to live life to the fullest despite their iatrogenic [caused by the doctor] handicaps. In his book The History of Shock Treatment (1978) shock survivor Leonard Frank made probably the first public disclosure of the work of D. Ewen Cameron of Canada, who assaulted patients with massive drug doses, bizarre forms of conditioning and what he called depatterning treatment. . . . Cameron was one of the most revered and rewarded psychiatrists on the international scene. . . Around the time of Frank's disclosures about Cameron's treatments, Cameron's work suddenly became a major scandal. Journey Toward Freedom: Rights and Empowerment Can Truong Can Truong is a psychiatric survivor who experienced coerced treatment who, through participating in the consumer movement, is able to be in recovery and become whole again as a person. First diagnoed with depression and bipolar disorder in college, he was forced to leave school in 1993. Over a 12-year period, Can was hospitalzied six times, tried more than 20 different medications, entered several clinical drug trials, and underwent 15 electroconvulsive shock treatments. Through it also, Can became a mental health recovery advocate -- one of the few Asian Americans in the country to do so. In 2005, he represented the U.S. recovery movement at the World Federation for Mental Health Congress in Cairo, Egypt. Currently, he is a recovery, wellness and empowerment educator, advocate, trainer, speaker and consultant. He is the founder and director of the Center for Education Empowerment where he does advocacy, training and consultation to individuals and organizations on recovery: to live, to learn and to work. to work.  [ send green star]

There are so many of you doing this now that we feel it's time to communicate even further some of the amazing things we've been able to accomplish, as well as give you a sense of where Icarus on a national housekeeping level is heading in the year ahead as we create space for more of us to voice our needs, desires and access to alternatives in our mind/body/communities and beyond. We're excited for all these successes, and hope you'll share in our enthusiasm, visioning and growth as we launch into 2007.2006 has been a year of vibrant growth and fruition. Icarus members across the country ?" and even from around the globe ?" are spreading the seeds of collective vision and nurturing local connections of caring and support. We continue to weave a vital community for people alienated from traditional care, helping isolated people avoid hospitalization, deal with suicidal feelings, and find expression for art, poetry, music and dreams. Just a sample of a few emails we've received recently:"I am a 20 year old female who has been called crazy my whole life; I am diagnosed with bipolar and ever since I was 5 years old I saw things and went places that people don't think exist. I want to live my life without people calling me crazy.""I have a new found confidence that all that I had suspected to be true in my isolated location in Africa appears to be true. Thanks again, just visiting the website had been exceptionally illuminating""I am so glad to have discovered like-minded people trying to find a sane and healthy way to exist in this world, where it is so very hard to be an open, aware, sensitive creature...."Over the past year, with a limited budget and small staff, we've nourished our community network, completed key long-term projects, strengthened our organizational structure, fulfilled the requirements of our Ittleson Foundation grant, developed our volunteer base, and laid a solid bedrock for the future. Our hard work has earned us the dedication of numerous volunteers and the autonomous partnership of Fountain House, the founding mental health clubhouse, where we have been offered technical assistance and the gift of a beautiful office space in midtown Manhattan. To give you a snapshot of our progress, we'd like to share some of the highlights from this year: In early 2006 we initiated our internship program at New York University, and held a highly successful benefit concert with Jolie Holland and Bonfire Madigan at the Knitting Factory in NYC. Soon thereafter we completed and released our collaborative publication, Friends Make the Best Medicine; A Guide to Creating Mental Health Support Networks in Our Communities, combining the release with the standing-room only opening of our second Art Show, entitled Pieces of Mind; A Celebration of Dangerous Gifts. The show, which was covered in the NY Non-Profit Press and received a full-page spread in the NY Daily News, featured over 30 Icarus affiliated artists from across the country. In October, a team of incredibly dedicated staff and volunteers (including one from Mexico!) launched a new, open-source version of our website (currently attracting over 500 unique visitors a day) to provide us with new interactive tools and greater transparency in finances and organizing. We spoke at mental health conferences, panels, skillshares, and festivals ranging from Michigan (Students Cooperation Institute), Alaska (Governors' Council on Disability), D.C. (Conference on Organized Resistance), Baltimore (Association of Rights Protection and Advocacy), Attleboro, MA (Northeast Herbalist Convergence), West Wheelock, VT (Vermont Activist Skillshare), New Orleans (Katrina relief), and NYU (radical mental health skillshare with 150 students). We also gave interviews on WBAI & KALX radio and in the NY Daily News and New York Times. We also moved into our newly donated office at Fountain House to distribute outreach materials and the 5th printing of our reader Navigating the Space, as well as hiring a new part time office and volunteer coordinator. As we look to 2007, we are beginning significant new projects: a curricula of popular education materials to facilitate Icarus Project workshops and raise mental health awareness; a nation-wide speaking tour and Icarus gathering for the Fall of 2007; micro-grants to seed local group activities and a national FM radio show syndicated on the Pacifica network. We will not be able to meet all of our goals without your continued financial support. ACTION: Please call Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist at 202-224-3344 and ask him to put the Child Medication Safety Act (HR 1790) on the unanimous consent calendar (the list of non-controversial bills) and pass it this week. Please call your two US Senators <> and ask them to support this bill and urge the same with Senator Frist. This bill is supported by groups on all points on the political spectrum, from the NAACP to Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum. With all of the new research on the dangers of the Ritalin class of drugs and given that there is ongoing funding for mental health screening of all ages of children, the basic protections for K-12 students in this bill that have already passed in the special education law should be passed without a moment's hesitation. Ask these elected officials whose interests they will support - those of parents and children, including minority children, or those of the psychopharmaceutical and education cartel? This is being sent to my big e-mail list that I only use a few times a year and it will even go to some people who don't live in the United States, but I urge everyone who does to contact their Senators urging them to vote yes on the Child Medication Safety Act (HR 1790). This is really important. If you want off this list, let me know. ALLIANCE FOR HUMAN RESEARCH PROTECTION (AHRP) Promoting Openness, Full Disclosure, and Accountability FYI / ACTION Urge your Senators to VOTE YES for the Child Medication Safety Act (HR 1790)!!! This bill will protect children from the mental health industry under the influence of, with financial ties to, the prescription drug industry. Help STOP mental screening of healthy children whose vulnerability is being exploited by those who have financial interests in increasing the use of psychotropic drugs. Schools have a financial incentive to label children as having a "mental disability" --they get extra federal funding. Children who are labeled as ADHD are being forced to swallow toxic mind-altering drugs, such as Adderall, whose label now carry Black Box warnings. "AMPHETAMINES HAVE A HIGH POTENTIAL FOR ABUSE. ADMINISTRATION OF AMPHETAMINES FOR PROLONGED PERIODS OF TIME MAY LEAD TO DRUG DEPENDENCE." "MISUSE OF AMPHETAMINE MAY CAUSE SUDDEN DEATH AND SERIOUS CARDIOVASCULAR ADVERSE EVENTS." See:,021303s013lbl.pdf : But those label warnings are NOT seen by parents. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that children prescribed psychostimulants--such as, Ritalin, Concerta and Adderall--suffered serious adverse events that landed them in hospital emergency rooms! FDA drug safety specialists have acknowledged that stimulants trigger hallucinations in children See: Review of Postmarketing Safety Data. MEMORANDUM RE: Psychiatric Adverse Events Associated with Drug Treatment of ADHD, March 3, 2006. Worse yet, children are being subjected to harmful psychotropic drug cocktails that have NEVER been TESTED for safety or efficacy in either adults or children. Contact: Vera Hassner Sharav 212-595-8974 URGE THE SENATE TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM FORCED DRUGGING! The lame duck Congress has decided not to deal with the federal budget bills including the mental health screening issues <> . They plan instead to do a "continuing resolution" which will fund these programs at their current levels until February when the Democrats will then have to deal with the budget. Since they do not have to pass the individual spending bills, they can work on other things. Of the bills they could pass in their last week, one that should be a "no-brainer" is the Child Medication Safety Act (HR 1790). The bill was passed <> for the second Congress in a row by the US House by the overwhelming majority of 407-12 <> in November of 2005. Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) introduced this common sense bill in September of 2006 right before the election. This legislation protects families from being coerced into administering psychotropic medications that are on the controlled substances list to their children in order to attend school. These are the Ritalin class of drugs used to treat ADHD, the most common psychiatric label given to children. It is identical to the legislation that passed in 2004 to protect students in special education from this same kind of forced drugging. The bill that would have protected all K-12 students died in the last session of Congress due to a blockade by Senator Edward Kennedy < _ bill/> (D-MA) at the behest of pharmaceutical and psychiatric groups. This bill is supported by a broad spectrum of groups. The NAACP < > (p.22) promoted this bill as part of its legislative priorities list for the Congress about to end. A variety of consumer, professional and grassroots political groups < - Liberty Coaltition.doc> all support this bill. Pediatrician Dr. Karen Effrem has presented testimony <> to Congress on this bill. She found that the medical literature demonstrates that these medications are overused, ineffective, and have dangerous, if not fatal, side effects. Most importantly, she reported that the "disorders" these drugs are supposed to treat are admitted by experts to have no scientific basis -- that there are many other reasons for behavior and learning disorders that do not require medication. Children have died <> from the dangers of these drugs forced on them by the schools. Since that testimony was presented, study after study has appeared continuing to show the dangers and lack of effectiveness of these medications. For instance, all in 2006: The Oregon Drug Effectiveness Review Project < Final Report Update 1.pdf> , analyzed 2287 pieces of research -- virtually every investigation ever done on ADHD drugs up to 2006 - to reach its conclusions: it found no evidence to support the claims about these drugs' safety, effectiveness, or the legitimacy of the ADHD diagnosis. The FDA strengthened its warnings <> on these drugs, finally acknowledging that these drugs cause dependency and addiction, hallucinations, psychosis, and heart problems, including sudden death. Special Discount for ICSPP Conference on Mental Health and the Law September 30, 2006 8:39 AM

This is going out to everyone on my Law Project for Psychiatric Rights (PsychRights) e-mail list and you are on it because I believe you are interested in PsychRights' work. If not, please let me know and I will remove you. The reason I am writing is because I have talked Dominick Riccio, the Executive Director of the International Center for Psychiatry and Psychology (ICSPP), into giving psychiatric survivors who can't afford to pay the full $300 or $325 registration fee for this year's conference on Mental Health and the Law a special $150 rate. So, if you are a psychiatric survivor and the reduction in the registration fee makes the difference between being able to attend and not being able to attend, just put that on the registration form and send it in. As you can see by the below description, this conference is going to be excellent (even if I do say so myself as co-chair of the conference and a speaker) and I encourage all of you others who haven't yet done so to register too (at the full price) and come if you possibly can. I unreservedly warrant it will be well worth it. We are trying to arrange an additional attraction, which I can't really reveal yet, and it my not come together, but I think many of you who don't come will regret it, whether or not the additional attraction is pulled off. The below conference information and registration form is also available on the Internet at ============================================= MENTAL HEALTH AND THE LAW Ninth Annual Conference of the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology, Inc. Participants include mental health professionals, academics, and researchers from the educational, academic and legal communities, the medical and social sciences, and members of the public. It is no exaggeration to state that most attendees find the annual conferences the most stimulating, useful, intellectually challenging, and friendly meetings they ever attend. The Ninth Annual Conference will be held in Washington, D.C. (Bethesda) and promises to be the best ever. Graduate students receive a 50% discount on registration fees. Law students receive a 50% discount on registration fees. Course Purpose. This year's ICSPP Conference is focused on the real-life intersection between mental health and the law. There will also be a two-session program on risk management and privacy for psychotherapists/counselors who work without drugging patients/clients: avoiding HIPPA. Learning Objectives. The participant will be able to: 1. More effectively assist people diagnosed with serious mental illness from being subjected to involuntary psychiatric procedures. 2 Reduce the risks associated with operating a non-coercive, non-forced drugging mental health program. 3 Incorporate the latest scientific findings regarding psychiatric treatments into their daily practices. Title: Pathological Compliance: The Therapeutic Action Master Clinician: Frank Summers Description: Today's clinician is frequently confronted with patients who do not feel they are the center of their own lives. They are driven to accommodate to other people at the cost of their own interests, desires, and passions. Often called "compliant masochists," such people tend to present with depression, sometimes with anxiety, and inevitably with a sense that their lives are not under their control and they are not achieving their goals. These patients see no connection between their self subjugation and their symptoms. This interactive case study will take you through the treatment of a prototypical patient of this type. Fwd: [global] Free book about Thomas Szasz December 15, 2005 6:15 AM

Fwd: [global] Free book about Thomas Szasz For your information: You probably all know who psychiatrist Thomas Szasz ( is. He became famous in 1961 for his book "The Myth of Mental Illness." The debate about what mental illness is has pretty much died out in the professional community, as nearly all psychiatrists and even psychologists today accept the paradigm of broken brain chemistry. However, heated discussions on the matter still sometimes rage forth in the community of users and survivors of psychiatry, whose opinions on the matter are much more diversif. Jan Pols is a Dutch psychiatrist who published a book (his thesis) about the writings and ideas of Thomas Szasz in 1984. His attitude towards Szasz is ambiguous. On the one hand he greatly admires him, on the other hand he rejects some of Szasz?Ts key arguments. In Pols?Ts view, compulsory hospitalization and treatment are unjustified precisely because mental illness *is* real illness, and thus subject to the same ethical standards as somatic illness. He ends his book with a suggestion for eliminating compulsory hospitalization in the Netherlands. When Pols's book appeared, his colleagues received it with a great deal of hostility, even though this was at the tail end of the ?oantipsychiatry? era. It was a book destined to be quickly forgotten, particularly as on a world scale, not many people read Dutch. But now he has collaborated with translating it into English, and you can read it too, for free, here: . Both people who agree with Szasz and people who don't will find things to identify with in this book. Again, this message is for your information only. No endorsement is implied. "There are several other pageson serving Katrina survivors with disabilities but I was struck inparticular by the lack of information on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity --my own disability -- which can be hard to accommodate.""We know from September 11th that when rescue workers and residents areexposed to toxins during and following a disaster, that even the healthyones can be disabled for life," added Ms. Norwitz. "Far too many September11th survivors still have asthma or pain or neurological impairmentsbecause of the chemicals in the air and dust, and many had to stopworking. How many Katrina survivors will suffer the same fate?"Greens and numerous scientists have detailed the toxicity of the NewOrleans environment in the wake of Katrina. But what about people with less obvious or hidden disabilities? Are they too embarrassed to ask for special help? Are they afraid ofdiscrimination, such as someone with AIDS might be subjected to? Are theyjust getting by and don't want to be any trouble?" asked Ms. Norwitz."Mental and or emotional disabilities are hidden disabilities. It is oftendifficult for people to speak out honestly and ask for what they need,"noted Judith Grant, Disability Caucus member from California."For AIDS patients, relocation to the wrong area could mean a deathsentence, if patients must contend with poor AIDS services, medicationinterruption, a need for new HIV cocktails, or struggles with strainresistance," said David M. Native Americans - Suicide prevention and depression September 08, 2005 12:40 PM

My name is Evelin Cervenkova. I am the founder of the Lakota Oyate Foundation in Germany. Already for 19 years I am interested in psychology, healing and cause of neurosis and depression. In the association of psychiatry experienced people I am working to improve health care for psychological ill people.Depression, a psychological disease, appears very often in high industrialized countries. In Germany every third or fourth person does suffer from depression sometime in his life. Here in Germany is suicide on the second place of cause of death at teenagers. At young adults is suicide on the third place of cause of death.Incidence of suicide among Native American young people, ages 15-24, is nearly three times that of the U.S. national rate (Indian and Alaskan Native rate is 37.5 per 100,000 vs. 13.2 per 100,000 U. S. all races according to the Indian Health Service Trends 1989-91).We are very concerned, knowing that Montana State prison is a facility where the Suicide Rate is one of the highest in the nation. In addition to this, there have been documented cases of severe mistreatment, abuse and neglect of mentally-ill prisoners. What are the reasons for existence of depression? The sum of negative experiences of life causes depression. Such negative life experience begins often in the childhood. A child, who does often hear, that it is stupid, lazy and unwelcome, cannotdevelop no self-confidence and becomes depressed. Authoritarian educated children have never learned to think and act independent Such children have an inclination to be depressed. Children, who are often left alone can be depressed. Victims of sexual abuse feel "soiled" and feel they are not worthy, or feelthey are at fault (guilt), even though they are the victims. Sexual abuse by parents or family members (incest) is very tragic. Sexual abuse by "authority"figures, i.e., teachers, doctors, and priests (elders and healers) isparticularly damaging. Constantly strain on nerves in the daily life are the most reasons for existence of depression. Very often are women affected by depression. Women have to educate childrenand go to work ore the are unemployed. Further reasons for depression are loneliness and social disadvantage. Longtime unemployed persons and their children are especially socialdisadvantaged. The number of unemployed people does increase particularly inEastern-Germany. There is the unemployment rate between 19 and 26 %. Onreservation of Native Americans in the USA should be the unemployment rat till93 %. Some suicidologists believe that the extremely high suicide rate among Natives is due to the suppression of their religion and culture by the Federal Governments. This suppression is still seen in the prison administrations;Canadian prisons have only recently allowed Native sweat lodge ceremonies;most American prisons routinely deny permission. How you can find out, if a person is depressed? The person suffers from insomnia. The person is unable to concentrate. The person has loss of weight. The person is hyperactive or has no energy. The person does cry. the person feels worthless. The person appears sad. The person thinks about it to commit suicide. When depression comes into existence in connection with social problems and social disadvantages, so we should talk to politicians about it.The Native Americans themselves are interested to take action against the high suicide rate of their people.Reservation communities are usually dependent upon the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to provide support in terms of crisis. IHS does not offer any services that are focused on suicide prevention or intervention. The BIA does not offer these services either. The suicide prevention of Native Americans needs financial support. Perhaps you know Native Americans who are interested on working on suicide prevention projects? I would like to introduce such suicide prevention projects of Native Americans in German spoken states the it can be supported. "being "real" about racism"; and my reply (M.H.) End of post January 18, 2005 7:10 AM

struggles for freedom and humanity areinterwoven with all life's, and this is real or it isn't in anyone's lifeand actions; so, every movements members are usually aimed in similar, ifonly parallel directions, at least. Also, the consumer/survivor movementhas taken on a totalitarian LEADERSHIP MODEL, AND i DON'T KNOW IF this isdue to their desires for more rapid and 'cleansing' change, or their seeingit work so well for other, and all, totalitarians, across the board(including republicans)? That I find alarming, as that is a very similar model to the patriarchal, hierarchal, greed based medical model, spearheaded by psychiatry(predominantly through their decades long agenda of replacing psychologicalinterventions based on talking with behaviorisms interventions, based on'fixes' of any and all kinds, disempowerment, etc.). This is throughout themovement, evident in almost every way, for e.g., the destroying of those whojust use words they don't agree with; like 'mental health', and abuse ofthose who work, or have worked in the various related fields, etc..As well, the predominance of what the supposed "sides" have worked out sofar, one you noted, "rubric of "cultural competence."", is an example of oneof those areas of agreement being realized by all involved. This while yourassertion that not enough is being done in any and all these areas is anaccurate assessment. Two things come to mind, first, Andre Lourde wrote :)"you can't dismantle the man's house with the man's (ion) tools". Whichallows us to discern that all the various denominations of the world'sactually largest religion, greed: supposed religions, sciences, arts, atheisms, etc., not being separated from the state can only determine thestate's ultimate corruption by them; and in all likelihood, a combination ofthem collaborating, differing ends to differing means, yet, similar in actand actualization. Also, since "absolute power corrupts absolutely", thedevolution of all life, leading to the ultimate extinction of humanity andlarge mammals, etc.; if it's not stopped and humanity turned 360 degreesaround, back to the evolution, life, and a possible future for it.Second, that only possibility for humanity and large mammals existence willdepend on a unifying movement, if not it, similar to the processes ofevolution itself, with lessons learned kept in the fore', like evolution canbe a needed common language, one for all, all for one, et al. Not 'lamachine's' projections that "everything will be alright, if you just ignorereality and realize total conspiring in making it up instead; and only theneverything will supposedly just work out, like on Star Trek". At the coreof humanities struggle to be alival, before they determine the supposed'necessity for only survival' until it actually can't, is evolutionaryindividuation through self-actuation of all growth, insight, compassion, empowerment, etc.; same as it ever was. Yes, building a movement takesstruggle, yet, we aren't files, we don't need organizing, we do need to getwhat a child wants, and give what a child gives, naturally, et al; beinghumane, unlike meansing to an ending like a machine; sort to speak. "being "real" about racism"; and my reply (M.H.) Rest of post January 18, 2005 7:07 AM

hijacked the left, "have it like that" MORE, THE MORE THE REPUBLICANS "haveit like that"; for, they've determined they're supposedly the onlylegitimate opposition and supposedly are 'diametrically opposed' to therepublican conspiracy, being a totalitarian one. This, leftover from thecold war symbiosis that those supposed opposites determined, and dividedmost of the world up between themselves with, collusion of conspiraciessimilarities, and devolution toward mirror images of their opposites, is theforce by which humanities extinction is being determined; and the antithesisof the evolution. That's one reason why you see most of the Middle East being 'anti-west' inthe public eye, which is sociologically programmed into the populaces mindsand actions, while the gov'ts and ruling classes actually support therepublicans over the democrats in the U.S., etc.. That can't only beexplained by the fact that the republicans are far better collaboratingmasters in the U.S.'s, nay the world's, slavery under fossil andnon-renewable fuels. There's also the fact that the republicans want to bemore totalitarian in their determining a supposed Christian theocracy hereand elsewhere, like some Islamic countries have seemingly succeeded in doing(and concur with the republicans doing), etc.; even though the democrats inthis country are more accepting of, and open to participation by, theIslamic countries, culturally, here, etc..A point being that what one would hope would be an "evolving" relationshipbetween obviously related movements isn't 'all that', nor, will it ever be.Another reason, as I was just told by a newspaper editor of which I didbusiness with for years, and had to stop recently because they said this,"beggars can't be choosers"; the editor was referring to me as a disabledperson, though 6 of one, half dozen of another, it's similar stigma when itcomes to consumer/survivors, sadly. In other words, we, as part of the"unworthy to live" category of 'olde', as the stigma from the CA eugenicsprograms adopted by the Hitler programs genocide of, disabled, handicapped, elderly, mentally challenged, disenfranchised, etc., populations, are stillbeing relegated to the "you get what you get" societal status we uneasilyhave a gripe on; and this is especially so for the consumer/survivors.Yet, that stigma is being propagated more by the republican conspiracy, fore.g., our 'inability to prosper' in unnatural capitalist determinedenvironments, and, ergo, be a stronger economic and political force, just asmuch as the progress we have made, are still reasoning used for therepublicans devolutionary "mental health initiatives". Like their trying todestroy exponentially more children through "total population mental healthscreening" programs. In effect, population control through drug andpsychiatric interventions of various and varying kinds. Now, do we hear the clarion cry from the totalitarian 'leaders' of the leftagainst this, not as much as you would think; because they 'think' thatprograms like that will effectively aid and abet their hidden agenda plansas well as the republicans (both based on forms of greed and power definedas destruction and murder), at least through only aiding the republicansones, and thereby, determining the need for their 'left' 'opposition', evermore. We can't forget, though, that famous saying that left out the disabled, handicapped, elderly, mentally challenged, disenfranchised, etc., form it,and made itself a tool of propaganda by doing so; instead of the truism thatit purports to be. That being :) "First they came for the communists, andI did nothing, for, I wasn't one, then the trade unionists,...", and on andon, totally ignoring the fact that Hitler first committed genocide against"the unworthy to live" categories of people, which I surmise the communists, nor many others of that day, didn't say much about, if anything; as thefascist projection that the less abled are "weak, sinful, burdens, condemnedby God, broken, who are or may propagate more of similar ones to themselves, only weakening all of society in the process, and should be segregatedand/or destroyed (what republicans like to call thinning the herd)", wasalive and well in that day, as it is making a comeback today.Of course, some might point out that this is more due to the trillionsnecessitated by the republican conspiracies determining the supposednecessity of "unending war" draining the tax coffers, yet, I would suggestthat it is equally both, necessary to devolve the worlds populaces intoaccepting and unbecoming into survivalists; until the global militarycontrol of all societies is establish seemingly by necessity, ushering inthe extinction of almost all of humanity, with naught but a whimper from it.Yes, it's a hard road, yet, humanity faces an even harder one in itsstruggle to even just exist; so, we take heart, no? Then, there is thefacts of the history and development of the consumer/survivor movement, itself; many of its beginnings and driving forces being theocratic, fromevangelical Christian to Satan worshippers, etc., cult driven and supported, also dominated by forces of all those groups, etc.. As well, it takes 2 totango, to what degree is this movement struggling for the progress that therest of the middle to left progressive movements are in all the areas thatthey are? Of course, anyone's struggl  [ send green star]
"being "real" about racism"; and my reply (M.H.) January 18, 2005 7:03 AM

"being "real" about racismHiIn the "client/survivor" movement, one of our key agendas isthe 'freedom train'. That means, we are not generally considereda part of the "freedom coalition" that is anti-racist, anti-sexist,pro GLBT, pro physical disability. We have a "2nd class status"and do not "ride the train" on the same basis as others. I keepwriting about "psychology coalition" as a political purpose, because that arrangement simply has got to change. The fashionable way that anti-racism is sold in mental health isunder the rubric of "cultural competence." Which is helpful inmaking multicultural issues accessible to professionals in themental health area. But where does it leave our folks? Stillmarginalized, I'd say, still looking to see how we can get a "seaton the train."I've been getting involved in a different framework, viz. workingwith the "police shootings" multicultural political movement inSan Jose, CA. The Coalition for Justice and Accountability (CJA)was founded in response to the shooting of Bich Cau Tran July '03.She was found holding up an Asian vegetable peeler ("daobao") andbehaving in a way that Vietnamese Americans regard as "normalVietnamese behavior"; she was shot dead by the police immediatelyupon entry, due to subjectively based police procedures (he _felt_"threatened").My colleagues and I have found that "we are all equal in the faceof being shot by the police for subjective reasons." Rather than"forced treatment" constituting a social barrier between us & theCJA, instead they have come to realize that the behavior of thepsychiatrists at EPS (Valley Medical Center Emergency PsychiatricServices) can be *part of the problem*. Which provides a valuabledialogical opening and offers us some kind of an insight into"ticket acquisition behavior" for the 'freedom train'. Hopefullythrough this outreach, we can make some contribution to thestruggle against the politics of "globalization."Andrew Phelps"What good would it do to present a shadowy image of myselfby means of a definition when you can see me with your owneyes, standing here before you face to face?"Erasmus, _Encomium moriae_, 1509"Regards: being "real" about racismDear Andrew, et al,Ola! Good Day. Hopefully, a happier and newer New Year to all, and to allan aight 'ight. Very cool responses, posts, thanx! I hope you and yoursare well and will continue to be. Your suggestion that the various"movements", if you'll allow, aren't coordinating to the benefit ofhumanity, the consumer/survivor movement, individual's growth, and eventhemselves is well offered and agreed on. Yet, since you're trying torelegate the conversation to a contextual perspective relating to why thepost-civil rights movements of the 'left' aren't giving a seat "at the frontof the bus" to the consumer/survivor one, there could be gapes wherediscernment would seem to be lacking. I'd prefer to address the wholeenchilada. The fall of the Berlin wall and the collapse of totalitarianisms viability,or at least in the 'communist' mold, marked a beginning of extremerealignments in every aspect of all humanities life. For purposes ofbrevity I will narrow my analysis to what directly relates to your subjectmatter. Yet, that same 'spearhead', if you'll allow, for the post-civilrights movements of the 'left', didn't FALL IN THE U.S.; although, it didbecome somewhat less strident. It's desire to do almost the same thing thatthe republican conspiracy was and is doing, by almost the same means, makesit a detriment to the actual progress of humanity, at least in some keyways; though, it did determine their effectiveness in doing so within theconfines and constructs of a republic system. So, dividing and conquering,a key republican tool, is also used by totalitarians; who have determinedtheir leadership roles in almost every one of those modern day movements, especially in the anti: racism, sexism, sexualitism, economic exploitationand war movements of which you referred. If you're not them, your an'enemy' or an 'opponent' at least, to be destroyed or struggled with atleast; as the republicans do, though, with alterations in means and ends, especially according to them. So, what do you find in totalitarian countries as relates to the treatmentof that group we call consumer/survivor's of mental health. Worse thanhere, and it is used as a tool to deny liberty and destroy societal, economic, social standing, and ones potential in all those areas, even morethan here. So, how much wonder can there be that the 'leadership', whichhas forced itself on the 'left', will not fully embrace a movement that isalso opposed to it 'totalitarian objectives' (at least to degrees), as it isopposed to 'republican objectives'; as relates to the fields of mentalhealth, and all involved in them? The two biggest forces on the planet, republican (which includes democratsand the Middle East, etc.) and totalitarian (which includes socialists, etc.) are in the processes of dividing up everything before the actualextinction of humanity devolves into full-swing, and military rule is theonly rule that exists. So, only for example, those totalitarians that have  [ send green star]
Documents: Prozac use reports more likely to list suicide January 05, 2005 12:12 PM

Angela M. 12:06 PM CNN Tuesday, January 4, 2005 Documents: Prozac use reports more likely to list suicide (CNN) -- Internal documents from Eli Lilly and Co. appear to indicate that the drug maker had data more than 15 years ago showing that adverse-effect reports for Prozac were far more likely to list suicide attempts and violence than reports for other antidepressants. One memo suggests a strategy for talking to doctors about unfavorable clinical trial data showing an increased risk of nervousness, anxiety, agitation, insomnia and sedation among patients. Lilly officials said Tuesday numbers in the documents made public Monday represented not clinical trials but "adverse effects" reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The company acknowledged the documents belong to Lilly. The data were reviewed extensively at the time, said Dr. Charles Beasley of Lilly, but "we did not believe this data, for a number of reasons, were terribly useful or informative in terms of suggesting anything about a causal link between the drug and the adverse effects being reported." The documents were provided to CNN by the office of Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-New York, who has called for tightening FDA regulations on drug safety. "The case demonstrates the need for Congress to mandate the complete disclosure of all clinical studies for FDA-approved drugs so that patients and their doctors, not the drug companies, decide whether the benefits of taking a certain medicine outweigh the risks," he said. One of the documents cites what a Lilly official told CNN were 14,198 adverse-effect reports in which 3.7 percent were suicide attempts by people on fluoxetine -- the generic name for Prozac. That rate was far higher than those cited for any of four other commonly used antidepressants. The document also states that 2.3 percent of those adverse-effect reports concerned psychotic depression while on the drug, more than double the next-highest rate of patients using any of the other antidepressants. In addition, the document said that 1.6 percent were reported incidents of hostility -- more than double the rate reported on any of the other commonly used antidepressants. And, the document says, 0.8 percent of adverse-effect reports concerned patients causing an intentional injury -- eight times the rate associated with any of the other antidepressants. Lilly officials said Prozac had only recently been approved in the United States at the time those data were compiled and as a result the drug was under close scrutiny by physicians, receiving more adverse effect reports than the older antidepressants. Such reports would be expected to decrease the longer any drug remains on the market, Beasley said. Among the documents is a memo in which the author says the drug may produce nervousness, anxiety, agitation or insomnia in 19 percent of patients, and sedation in 13 percent of patients. Beasley did not dispute the contents and said he likely authored the memo, titled "Activation and sedation in fluoxetine clinical trials." The memo said, "Several suggestions may be helpful in presenting this information to physicians," including emphasizing that more patients on another class of antidepressants stopped taking their drugs than did those on Prozac. The existence of the documents obtained by CNN and other documents was reported last week by the British Medical Journal. Its editors said the documents had been reported missing from a 10-year-old murder case, and that they had sent them to the FDA for review. The journal said the documents disappeared in 1994, during the case of Joseph Wesbecker, a printing press operator who had killed eight people at his Louisville, Kentucky, workplace five years before, while taking fluoxetine. He then shot and killed himself. Each of the four pages of the documents obtained by CNN is stamped "Confidential" and "Fentress," the name of one of Wesbecker's victims. That stamp, said Lilly spokesman Morry Smulevitz, likely was used because the documents were provided to plaintiffs' attorneys in the trial. He said the documents did not disappear, but have always been available. In a civil suit against Eli Lilly, victims' relatives contended the company had long known about the side effects of fluoxetine, including its alleged role in increasing a user's propensity to violence. Lilly initially won the case, but it was later forced to admit that it had made a secret settlement with the plaintiffs during the trial, which meant that the verdict was invalid, the journal said. The FDA has recently warned that antidepressants can cause side effects such as agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, and aggressiveness. In a statement posted on Lilly's Web site, the company said, "To our knowledge, there has never been any allegation of missing documents from the Wesbecker trial or any other trial involving Lilly. Further, it has always been Lilly's objective to publicly disclose data about both the safety and efficacy of fluoxetine. "Lilly has made several requests to the BMJ to obtain copies of the supposed 'missing' documents; we still await these documents. We are surprised and concerned that a leading medical journal would not find it important to share these documents with us so that we could respond to the public in a meaningful way." Based on its history of having provided regulatory authorities with study results, the statement said, "Lilly believes that there is no new scientific information to review on this topic." About 54 million people worldwide have taken Prozac, Smulevitz said. ============================================= is a free service of the National Vaccine Information Center and is supported through membership donations. [PeacePsych] Alerts: Psychologists and torture, etc.. December 20, 2004 6:59 AM

[PeacePsych] Alerts: Psychologists and torture, etc..Subject: Re: [PeacePsych] 2005 National Multicultural Conference & SummitFrom: Dan Jordan <>News reports state that psychologists are participating in the tortureof prisoners at Guantanamo. I see this as both a serious ethics issueas well as reflecting badly on the profession. Is anyone else concernedabout this? What would it take to get an investigation by APA? Who arethe psychologists? Are they licensed? If they refer to themselves assuch but are not psychologists, then at least a cease and desist orderwould be useful.Or, do we all just sit by and read these things and go on with ourlives as if it did not matter?PeaceDan Jordan, PhDSubject: Psychologists and tortureFrom: Dan Jordan <>First off, I just joined this list, and wonder if anyone else is on it. I am a licensed social psychologist, but resigned from APA due to itspromotion of racism. (I'd be glad to forward the material related to myresignation.) I was also involved with D48 in the early days, set updesigned and edited the division's newsletter and then bulletin for acouple of years. My immediate concern is a set of news articles that psychologists areworking in Guantanamo to assist in the torture of prisoners there. Thatis a clear violation of the APA (and I would assume professionallicensing status), and would like to see if the news articles can beverified. If so, is it possible to identify the psychologists, andbring appropriate ethics charges against them?I make this inquiry for the obvious humanitarian reasons. I also makeit because of how such behavior and the resulting news stories reflectsso badly on the profession. Just think, members of the community, psychologists are people who can help torture other people. Not exactlya great image.Even if the individual psychologists cannot be identified I think itbehooves us to make a stir about this, go public, let the world knowthat the profession opposes such behavior, and that we will work tostop it. If we are silent on this issue, then we are implicit in it. Ifwe are silent, we make it evident that we support torture.PeaceDan JordanSubject: Fw: [DIV48] 2005 National Multicultural Conference & SummitDear Everyone,Some of you have been asking about what the progam is for the NationalMulticultural Conference and Summit to be held in Hollywood, Californiaon January 27th and 28th. NIMHANS a premier institution also has a huge campus and family assistance ward. The doctors at NIMHANS, India have extensive experience in treating the mentally ill but being a public hospital and the patient/doctor ratio being adverse to patients you have to wait. re: group October 01, 2004 4:41 AM

i just saw this group in my email this morning and think its great there are groups like this one for people like us who suffer on a daily basis with mental health issues. 8 years ago i was diagnosed with bi-polar/ severe anxiety/ and OCD. in the past 4 weeks i was diagnosed with ADHD, somthing i never thought about because it runs in our family and it never occured to me to bring it up to my dr. ( i think i just forgot) anyway i see how the symptoms are so similar and its hard to to make a correct diagnosis. since i have been taking the medication strattera along with zoloft and klonipin i see the differences between the OCD and the hyperactivity. i'm not saying i was ever misdiagnosed but because i neglected to inform my dr ADHD runs in my family the symptoms are very similar and the dr. first thought all i suffered from was the bi-polar (btw, i am bi-polar2) i never know from day to day how i will feel when i wake up and even with the medications ( i have been on a thousand it seems) i can go from one mood change that can last from 1 hour to several days. i have tried thearpy and it doesnt work. ( i'm not much of a talker) i have lost jobs, friends, relationships etc because of my illness but i try to stay positive and read as much info as i can about these conditions. WEBmd is a good source for information. i have a very understanding dr. as well as a compassionate and caring partner which helps tremendously. there is another group on mental health in care2 i need to check out but i just wanted to post my opinion on these issues and if there are any petions to sign, people who just want to chat ( i'm no health proffesional) you can email me and i will respond as quickly as possible. thank you  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

"Stigma - fighting stigma where I find it" August 15, 2004 3:55 AM

"Stigma - fighting stigma where I find it" "My tdoc says I just have to much experience with the medical profession. He says I know too much about it. I know a heart surgeon carries more esteem amongst doctor peers, then a foot doctor does, for instance. My internist went to far, and then totally to far. I was bipolar symptomatic in his office. I had motor mouth. He said not a word to me. He reported this to my pdoc. Fine, I am proud that he recognized this, and I don't mind him sharing his observation. But, by not telling me also - I felt invisable / non-human and worse, now I am extremely timid about saying anything in a doctors office. What if I have motor mouth and don't know it, like that one time? I think I have a valid point of view. Treat me like an intelligent adult. I am an intelligent adult. Last time I saw this guy, he darn near blamed my psychiatric hopsitalizations on me personally, rather then the fault of illness. If I didn't know I needed a different doctor before - I'd be blind to not know it now. So I made a appointment with a new doc, and waited my 6 weeks and went and saw him. Believe it or not - it was worse. Apparently this new doc shares weekend on call with the old doc. (small town) I didn't mention the old docs name - it was in my file from another doc. The new doc got busy covering his buddies butt. Personality conflict - ah, come on - I worked 20 years in the corporate world - what this means is you don't want to hear this - it must be my fault. I didn't take it on. It's not my fault. Well, I can't solve your emotional problems ... ouch, emotional problems ... isn't that the phrase of old ... from men to their whimpering women? I never asked him to. That's why I have a pdoc. I should have seen it coming on his entry form. Does anyone in your family have a history of stroke, diabetes, etc ... "nervous breakdown" --- what the heck is this? Other then an old out of date term? History of "insanity" - this is a legal term, not a medical term. Yes, I have enough experience to know when I am confronting negative bias against mental illness, and I am not blinded just because these guys are esteemed internists. I went fishing for what I need in a medical doctor. I need a medical doctor who does not make me uncomfortable that I have a severe mental illness. By chance of appointment date, I may be symptomatic in their office, and thus my behavior may seem strange. If this is a problem with that doctor, I want to know up front, before I find out in a medical pinch. I found out all right. I just told the guy "I don't think this will work" and left. He said fine. So I'm still looking. Maybe something lower down on the food chain. Maybe a nurse practioner would be a good idea? I need a medical doctor who is comfortable and can sort the wheat from the chaff. I have been in ER before, seeking migraine assistence as the root cause, that triggered severe mania. Yes, I was in there complaining migrine and severely manic. I need a doctor who can listen to me, and believe me when I say - it's the migraine that has to be treated. Yes, I know I am severely manic, but I believe if we can kick back that headache, it would go a long way in settling the mania. I don't need a doctor who thinks they know it all - particulary over that crazy person, who is not a person at all, and goes chasing phantoms in the dark. I don't know how it went with my neurologist. I told him I was symptomatic. I put my synopsis of our lastest trial in writing, so I didn't go talking his ear off about trivia. That all seemed okay. But then I misunderstood him and freaked out on him. That can't be pleasant for any of the professionals who are trying to help us. I did recognize this within 24 hours and faxed an apology into him. I felt so embarrassed. I wasn't always this way. Did this smooth things over? Does he still want to help me? Or is he like these others - get that nut out of my office. I don't want anyone with a mental illness in my practice. I don't know, and I need him. I am sure I am afraid to ask. I got to admit, particulary with one lawyer who was trying to defend me - man, I had to have been one unpleasant client. I was so whacked in the head, I really didn't know what was going on, and I was sure the lawyer was lying to me. Fortuneately for everyone, my husband jumped in there and ran interferance. I was plenty darn sick, at the time. I can understand the doctors position. I can be troublesome and not a docile patient at all. I just need that special someone, who can overlook this for the higher virtue of healing - and healing for all people, even people with severe mental illness. my 2 cents Linda-room42 "lindaroom42" "  [ send green star]
MedWatch and Pets Helping Mental Health August 10, 2004 11:53 AM

First issue - I noticed the discussion of Risperdal. If you're not aware, there's an FDA consumer site called MEDwatch, where you can send in complaints and subscribe for medication updates on certain drugs the FDA has put out recent warnings - Risperdal has been one of those drugs. I recently complained about the risk of Diabetes and Zyprexa there. Second issue - This is happy to news to me... A U.S. National - AP wire story ( Tue, Aug 10, 2004 ) announced a "Judge OKs Woman's Dog As Depression Aid". A women took her landlord to court who wanted to evict her for having a dog in a no pets allowed complex. She was able to convince the court the dog helped her depression. Scientific studies have shown again and again that animals can elevate the mood of people suffering from mental illness. I myself have 2 cats, and they help relieve a great deal of loneliness and isolation I feel at times as a person with a depression. I hope judgements such as this continue to occur, so people with mental illnesses do not have to worry when they move about if they can keep their beloved and much needed companions.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Re: [PeacePsych] What's Been Proven on Resiliency August 10, 2004 1:38 AM

"Sure, I'm responding to this e-mail months after it was sent, but my eyes have been hurting so much these past few months, that I really got behind on reading my e-mails. Yet today I saw a story that antidepressants are so widely prescribed in the UK that Prozac is showing up in the groundwater there, that I figured that I'd better get back to my efforts to get the causes of the rampant depression explored and have the results known. ** Prozac 'found in drinking water' ** An Environment Agency report says the antidepressant drug Prozac has been found in the UK's drinking water. There's one thing that really makes me wonder about this, though. I remember seeing the phrase "tending or befriending," in regards to why women are victim-blamed for "letting themselves in for it," when they're diagnosed as codependent. This is the reason given for why women respond to addicted or similarly dysfunctional parents by choosing spouses who cause the same grief, by "asking for trouble" of the sort they're used to. It seems that all those Florence Nightingales out there respond to such grief by feeling a need to caretake, which is certainly more respectable than is their "letting themselves in for it" masochistically, but they still seem to have "asked for" their own problems by acting like stereotypically self-giving women. My own first real experience with the problem-solving approach that I've gotten to think of as "victim correction as a panacea," involved the idea of codependency. Ever since I was a teenager anyone who didn't have a chronically manic personality, what science calls a "hyperthymic" personality, seemed half dead to me. Those with hyperthymic personalities tend to be like the celebrities who attract hordes of groupies, charismatic smart creative and soulful, but also having plenty of artistic-temperament-style behavior problems, such as boozing doping irascibility flamboyant eccentricities and irresponsibility. If you surrounded yourself with all of the celebrities who attract hordes of groupies, then you sure would tend to associate with people who have artistic-temperament-style behavior problems, so you could very easily seem to have a subconscious codependent attraction to artistic-temperament-style behavior problems. Yet the only groupies who are attracted to the boozing and doping, are those who want to share the booze and dope. Since that's basically what happened to me, I really got to see close-up how determined such logic is to blame the victims. This logic starts out with the psychology of The Serenity Prayer, which, in its totality as originally written by Reinhold Niebuhr, says, "God, grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace; Taking as Jesus did this sinful world as it is not as I would have it; Trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will; So that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next.-Amen." The psychology based on this could be best described by the title of Dr. Robert Jay Lifton's classic book on Maoist brainwashing, Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism, since the whole idea is that no matter what hardship and/or sinfulness one is up against, the goal is to transform his thinking into something stolid enough to deal with it emotionally and physically. According to that logic, victim correction should be a panacea because that's more pragmatic and forgiving, and less mollycoddle, than is even the most worldly moral responsibility, such as Situation Ethics. The premise that victims "let themselves in for it," whether it be because they respond to grief with a desire to nurture, or anything else, offers all the more hope that expecting the victims to solve their own problems self-reliantly and with plenty of self-motivation, isn't really victim-bashing, since the victims aren't really victims. This sort of victim-blaming is the topic of ane of the subchapters in Susan Faludi's feminist book Backlash. ~Sharen "Sharen Keim" PeacePsych is a moderated discussion list for those interested in peace psychology owned by the Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict, and Violence: Peace Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association ( and hosted by Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri LIST Moderator: Linda M. Janssen Lied About Risperdal Dangers August 07, 2004 8:55 AM

Janssen Lied About Risperdal Dangers Maker of Schizophrenia Medicine Clarifies Risks Associated Press Sunday, July 25, 2004; Page A12 TRENTON, N.J., July 24 -- The maker of a popular medicine for schizophrenia has notified doctors that it had minimized potentially fatal safety risks and had made misleading claims about the drug in promotional materials. Janssen Pharmaceutica Products LP sent a two-page letter to health care professionals to clarify the risks of Risperdal, Carol Goodrich, a spokeswoman for the Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, said on Saturday. The letter stems from a directive issued last year by the Food and Drug Administration, which told several makers of anti-psychotic drugs to update their product labels. Janssen complied in November 2003, but the FDA determined that the company's promotional materials still minimized the risk of strokes, diabetes and other potentially fatal complications. The agency also said Janssen made misleading claims that the medication was safer in treating mental illness than similar drugs. The Miami Herald reported on Saturday that several boys in Florida developed lactating breasts after taking Risperdal. The drug, which is prescribed to more than 10 million people worldwide, was cited in a federal lawsuit filed earlier this month by a doctor who contends that children have been harmed and even killed by the misuse of drugs that he blames on the aggressive marketing by drug manufacturers. "The FDA did not think we had [initially] provided enough information, so that is why further notification was done," Goodrich said. Risperdal is the leading drug used to combat schizophrenia and other types of psychotic disorders, bringing Janssen about $2.1 billion in annual sales. The drug was first marketed about eight years ago. 2004 The Washington Post Company  [ send green star]
More On Risperdal: 1 in 3 Foster Kids Drugged August 07, 2004 8:53 AM

MIAMI HERALD, Posted on Sat, Jul. 24, 2004 CHILD WELFARE, Maker of drug admits hiding its risks BY CAROL MARBIN MILLER The maker of a billion-dollar antipsychotic medication has acknowledged misleading doctors and other healthcare providers about the safety of its product, minimizing potentially deadly side effects. The drug, Risperdal, has been commonly prescribed to Florida children in state care, including to a handful of boys who developed lactating breasts after taking it. On Wednesday, drug maker Janssen Pharmaceutica wrote a two-page letter to doctors, warning them that the company, in promotional material, had ''minimized potentially fatal risks, and made misleading claims'' that the medication was more safe in treating mental illness than other drugs in the same category. Most physicians received the letter Friday. Risperdal is the leading drug used to combat schizophrenia and other types of psychotic disorders, earning Janssen about $2.1 billion in annual sales. The drug was first marketed about eight years ago, and is prescribed to more than 10 million people worldwide. The ''important correction of drug information'' came shortly after federal regulators had accused Janssen of ''disseminating'' advertising and marketing material that was ``false or misleading.'' A letter from Janssen to doctors, dated Nov. 10, 2003, claimed Risperdal did not increase the risk of diabetes among consumers compared with other similar drugs, called neuroleptics or antipsychotics. But an April 2004 letter from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to Janssen asserts quite the contrary. Research indicated ''an increased risk of hyperglycemia-related adverse effects and diabetes with Risperdal,'' the letter stated. A TROUBLED HISTORY In 2001, The Herald published a series of stories about the common use of Risperdal among children in state care. Child-welfare advocates said the drug routinely was being used by foster care providers as a ''chemical restraint'' on children whose unruly behavior was a frustration to caretakers. ''I had clients who were displaying severe side effects, and I tried to alert the Department of Children & Families both as to the local problem and the growing national concern about a range of psychotropic medications, Risperdal and other antipsychotics in particular,'' said Coral Springs attorney and children's advocate Andrea Moore. ''They listened, but they did not hear me,'' Moore added. Broward Circuit Judge John A. Frusciante, who must approve requests from doctors before they can prescribe mind-altering drugs to children whose cases he oversees, said Risperdal continues to be used frequently by doctors who treat children in state care. ''It is not uncommon,'' Frusciante said. ''This whole psychotropic drug issue is a problem for us,'' Frusciante said. ``It's a very scary area to be in, because we know medication can be a tremendous help for a number of children. But we also know that there are risks to the children who are taking these medications.'' Friday, DCF officials told The Herald they would review the new material and ask doctors who care for foster children to re-evaluate their medication options. ''We will make this information available to all our districts, program supervisors, community-based care agencies and partners,'' said DCF spokesman Bill Spann. ``In addition, we will provide this information to all the physicians who care for the children in foster care, and ask them to review the cases of any children who are on the drug. ''We will ask them to take the appropriate action,'' Spann said. ONE IN THREE TREATED The state Agency for Health Care Administration, which pays the drug bill for most children in state care, as well as needy children who are insured by Medicaid, could not say Friday how many Florida Medicaid recipients are being administered the drug. In 2001, after The Herald's series, DCF reviewed the records of most foster children. Records showed about about one in three foster children taking a powerful mood-altering drug. Many were taking untested combinations, or ''cocktails,'' of the drugs. Infants and toddlers were being given psychiatric drugs, according to a 2003 study by the Florida Statewide Advocacy Council. Antoinette R. Appel, a Plantation neuropsychologist, studied the records of about 50 South Florida foster children who had been prescribed Risperdal. She said many of the children developed severe side-effects, including obesity, lethargy, lack of concentration, hormonal disorders and the inappropriate development of secondary sexual characteristics, such as lactating breasts in boys or young girls. Carolyn Salisbury, associate director of the University of Miami's Children & Youth Law Clinic, has pleaded with child welfare authorities for about five years to curtail the widespread use of mood-altering drugs among foster kids, who often complain the drugs make them more ill. VICTORY IN COURT One of the clinic's most high-profile clients, identified in court papers as M.W., won a Florida Supreme Court ruling that child welfare authorities cannot lock up foster kids in psychiatric hospitals without a hearing. M.W. had developed lactating breasts after doctors forced him to take Risperdal, court records show. One of Salisbury's clients, a 15-year-old girl, begged her to prevent the child welfare agency from forcing her to take Risperdal, Salisbury said. The girl had become obese and suffered from dramatic mood swings, alternating between feeling agitated or very depressed. ''I always object to my foster child clients being placed on Risperdal . . .,'' Salisbury said. ``However, DCF continues to place children in their care on the drug, even though DCF knows full well the horrible side effects foster children continue to suffer on this drug.''  [ send green star]

"Suggestions for Mental Health Social Change" August 05, 2004 4:30 AM

"Dear Becky: The practice of apartheid, keeping mental health clients isolated unless they endorse drugs and forced treatment programs, must end if any real reform is to occur. Could you tell me where Kerry stands on issues of real importance, such as earmarking federal grant funds for client voluntary nonprofit startups, which we desperately need? Where does he stand on establishing employment advocacy programs to ameliorate the pathetic and shameful 85 percent unemployment rate among mental health clients who *want* to work but cannot be hired because of stigma? Where does he stand on supported work programs, including placement withstrong skills matching, retention counseling and mediation, social components for people facing the same obstacles and negotiating extensive networks of employers willing to give psychiatrically labeled persons opportunities to show what they can accomplish? Where does Sen. Kerry stand on expanding decent social services, including family counseling by psychologists and sociologists to help people caught in abusive homes and their families improve the dynamics and stop scapegoating the most vulnerable or least aggressive family members. Such dynamics are the root cause of much that is called 'mental illness,' and family counseling that blames nobody, and certainly doesn't blame the brain of the scapegoated victim, is vital to an authentically diverse and respectful mental health system. Families need help learning to support the weak and least aggressive among us instead of driving them crazy with unconscious (or conscious) bullying, intimidation and disdain for their differences or creative characteristics too often interpreted as symptoms of 'mental illlness.' People need choices, community and peer and family supports to recover their hope for a better future and inclusion in the nation's lifestream. These are the real needs. To reduce taxpayer costs for entitlement, the common sense solution is to help mental health clients 1) go to work and participate in mainstream social and political process and 2) help them determine their own lives by providing diverse voluntary programs with arrays of choices and approaches and 3) help them get out of the box by earmarking federal grants for client nonprofit voluntary advocacy/self-help startups in every major city. Most of us know that not every person can be salvaged or become completely self-determined, but we also know just throwing away an entire culture and community of persons who are harmlessly and often creatively different is robbing society of the diversity, originality and wisdom we desperately need in a time of sociopolitical crisis. This is an agenda that makes sense. Short of being actually brain damaged, I have never met a mental health client who could not speak for himself and herself, and many psychiatrically labeled persons are gifted. Their expertise, wisdom and talents are being wasted by systemic paternalism. Mental health clients are tired of being regarded as potential terrorists and portrayed as dangerous, unreliable and inherently criminal. Mixing those apples and oranges only increases stigma and reduces opportunities. NAMI has done more harm than good by claiming to be 'the nation's voice on mental illness.' It is time to give mental health clients space for their own voices, instead of basing policy on the propaganda of organizations receiving both drug and system money to forward Big Pharma and system agendas totally unrelated what to mental health clients need and want to become part of the nation's lifestream. While WRAP is a good plan in itself, making it the *only*plan would be as dangerous as the dreadful fascist tendency of NMHA/NAMI to make the medical model the *only plan.* Please, help us move far away from just *one plan* into the seeding and growing of many approaches fully embracing the diversity of the client culture, where democratic dialogues keep briskly evolving in stark contract to the 'monology of the one plan' being promoted under current circumstances. Please let me know if Sen. Kerry can support the measures I have outlined for you. I have a personal story of system hell, and although reliving it reinforces the iatrogenic trauma I have experienced, I am more than glad to write my story, if it will help others escape systemic brutality, neglect, abandonment, dehumanization and ignorance. I, personally, support every effort to take back America and then make it a place where the contibutions of all people wishing to be involved, however humble and outcast, are valued as little pieces of the big puzzles we need to solve at grassroots levels, not top down and imposed from on high from the DC think tanks or ideologues with 'one plan' for salvation. This country's strength has always been its diversity of opinion and complexity of culture, and the voices of mental health clients can enrich the dialogues. Society needs us...and doesn't even know it right now. Sincerely, Sue Poole 4706 Holbird St. North Charleston, SC 294054 843-744-2002 Check out, and ask yourself why DHHS is orchestrating legislation for a partisan 'model legislation' clearinghouse!"  [ send green star]

"eye-witnesses are not credible, and fingerprint identification is an art not a science. I believe criminals not so-called psychotics commit crimes and what we call psychosis needs like Dr. Romme says, "LIBERATED" Bental in Madness Explained on page 113 lists hundreds of so-called eminent persons who experienced psychosis including SCIENTISTS T. Brahe, Copernicus, Descartes, Faraday, Kepler, Newton, Pascal, Darwin, Jung, Godel who suffered so-called paranoid delusions and many more ( I would add John Nash and Richard Feynman who saw words as colors and who heard voices all his life and used them to make his discoveries and perhaps Einstein who used a creative imagination developed according to Howard Gardner early in life when others might have been forcing him to use his linguistic intelligence (forcing him to talk) What if these folks were identified as different then labeled and medicated? Bental lists THINKERS: Kant , JB Watson, Rousseau, William James, Swedenborg, Neitzsche and the list goes on. Bental further lists WRITERS; Lewis Carrol, Hawthorne, Pound, Swift, Strindberg, Balzac, Barrie, Blake, Boswell, Dickens, Plath, Woolf, Poe, Fitzgerald, Frost, Goethe, Shelly, Anne Sexton and a many, many more. ARTISTS: Pollack Goya, Kandinsky, Leonardo da Vinci, Van Gogh, Rothko, Michelangelo, Mogadiglini and scores more. Many COMPOSERS and so many others like Joan of Arc, Nijinski, Judy Garland - in fact if he had bothered with Popular Cultural he could have listed thousands of psychosis experimenters and if we believe that so-called psychedelic drugs mimic so-called psychosis he could have mentioned the 40 million Americans that told the Gallup pole that they have done that. Psychotic is not like gay it is like fag or %#&!*% or kyke or greaser. Please try not to use that P or S word or the MI label when writing for THEM or US. Father, Mother and Me, Sister and Auntie say All people like us are We, And everyone else is They, And They live over the sea, While We live over the way, But - would you believe it? - They look upon We As only a sort of They. "MADNESS EXPLAINED LOOK..." August 05, 2004 1:26 AM

"MADNESS EXPLAINED LOOK - thanks Thank you for your sensible answer to my concerns about psychiatric labels. I am still concerned even after your well thought out reply. Please Consisder: The homosexual psychiatrists and activists who rioted at the 1973 APA convention were not in fear of being labeled Gay by culture but "Mentally ill" under the DSM-2 Section 302 - Deviations. They fought hard and won and important victory (perhaps he only such victory) to no longer have a mental-illness label. So why should we allow these labels either? Jim you said, "...people do go psychotic and people know that people go psychotic and that trying to make the distinction between that and the mental illness label is not something that can be done in a 10-second sound bite." Here is a ten second sound byte. "When I was coming up, it was a dangerous world, and you knew exactly who they were. It was us vs. them, and it was clear who them was. Today, we are not so sure who they are, but we know they're here. " George Bush I have been labeled psychotic. I have the paperwork to prove it. This is different then me calling myself Mad. Madmen and Madwomen are cultural labels like Queer and Gay. I don't mind this - I don mind hearing another sufferer/surivivor called psychotic. I wish you wound not use the label psychotic with or without the sound-byte or as you wrote it "BITE" - because each time used it is another bite into the ability of Mad people to not be seen as having mental-illness and being OTHER rather than having perhaps a sensitivity we might call mental-gifts instead. Richard Bental in his recent work MADNESS EXPLAINED - Psychosis and Human Nature that covers this issue for over 600 pages relates a story he says he will "Never Forget". Dr. Marius Romme invited him to speak and afterward at dinner said, " I really like your work on hallucinations, Richard. But the trouble is you want to CURE hallucinations, whereas I want to LIBERATE them. I think they are like homosexuals in the 1950s - in need of liberation not cure. (p. 511) I understand your mention that "...people do go psychotic and people know people go psychotic..." was perhaps meant to highlight that the public are in fear of what they have been led to believe - but I also think that by using this language yourself you enter the realm of Whitaker saying publicly that there are some people that really are mentally ill - I believe we are all guilty of this prejudice because it is a seminal idea in language and culture. I believe it to be untrue. I think this idea of the "really" crazy or the so-called psychotic is similar to our idea that Eye Witnesses are credible, Lie Detectors actually work or that Fingerprint Identification is a Science that can positively identify someone. These are strong cultural myths we throw around but are not factual. So-called Lie Detectors have never worked" Continued :)  [ send green star]

I'm spending less time sleeping now I am in week 3 after my Chemo, but still get words muddled and Peter my husband doesn't fix it anymore, I think he has learnt I con't do anything about it. We (he) got some nice brick things for edging the garden at the front as we got rid of the lawn and changed everything due to the drought. He has finished the part facing the street and it looks grand I'm proud of our work (I was sitting in a comfy chair supervising) he now is so impressed we are going to do the same brick thingumybobs along the retaining wall to keep it looking super pretty. The bulbs are coming out and I have no idea what they are as I have already forgotten. Hope they look nice though. Love Christine  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

I concur with Will Hall's statement. I labored long and hard on the Commission to send out our vision that recovery is expected for everyone. Daniel B. "Responses to NAMI Support Groups / Brochure" July 28, 2004 2:11 AM

"Response to NAMI Support Groups / Brochure This is an email I sent to Mary Rives, Director of Western Mass NAMI. -- will Hi Mary, Recently I received a mass emailing asking me to forward an announcement about NAMI-WMA's new support groups. My statement in reply is below, as are some of the numerous emails of support I received. Yes, NAMI does good work, and at the same time, will you please change the deeply troubling content of your brochure? You need to start sending an accurate and recovery-oriented message. Sincerely, Will Hall Freedom Center Dear Cheryl, Thanks for the info. While I am a strongly committed to support groups, and we have organized a weekly group in Northampton for the past 3 years, I believe that recovery from 'mental illness' is possible and should be promoted. I'm afraid that forwarding this information to people as you request would go against the message of recovery. NAMI-Western Mass's public information brochure states (and this is a direct quote), "Currently mental illnesses cannot be prevented or cured." I cannot in good conscience spread such an unscientific and false message of hopelessness. While support groups are good, it is harmful to tell this to people. Believing such a message would stop my own recovery process from a schizophrenia diagnosis dead in its tracks. People need accurate information about the emotional suffering they are going through, and they need a message of hope that recovery is possible -- not a message that they have an uncurable mental illness and can never recover. Sincerely, Will Hall Freedom Center I recognize that the NAMI support group for people receiving services may, in fact, be helpful to people who attend. I am sure this is what Cheryl had in mind. Nevertheless I think it's great that Will noticed the wording in the NAMI brochure, which is upsetting to me because it is just point blank untrue. Cannot be prevented? I know that my trauma diagnoses could have easily been prevented if I lived in a healthier environment growing up. Moreover, I have heard of studies which found that growing up in an "positive" environment can lower the chances of developing depression. I know I am preaching to the already convinced but really, one must shut their eyes pretty tight to not see this basic truth. NAMI must change the wording in their brochure in order to reflect current knowledge, not to mention offer words of hope to people who need that very much. Nicki Glasser I fully agree with and support Will Hall. Bravo, Will! Dusty Miller" Continued in my next post :)  [ send green star]

"Linda - again reporting in - I am finally back to me" July 25, 2004 1:45 PM

"Linda - again reporting in - I am finally back to me Hi everyone. I tagged much of this onto Eleanor's post, but because so many of you have been so supportive, I just kind of wanted to come right out and say it. I am back to me. I was in a 2 month breakout mood episode, most of that time in denial of it, I guess - while still suspecting something was wrong. But it is now over. I am hum drum level old me. No more drama. Off Lithium, my migraines returned. I believe it was the returning migraines that set the bipolar in motion. I, of course, was extremely sensitive to all the "off lithium" warnings. And sure enough, what I got for a breakout mood episode was very different, then what I had become accustomed to. But I had these on lithium also, so why wouldn't they occur off lithium? No reason, just the enormous pressure to stay on lithium - so it was like I wasn't permitted to be symptomatic off lithium. This is just plain stupid. I am symptomatic both on and off lithium. Just more extreme off Lithium. I am relieved that is over. I did get into my share of trouble, dog gone it. I did get locked up briefly, and more sadly - I completely trashed one social circumstance I had been involved in. And that's not counting the one evening of rage, or my little run away trip. Though my pdoc has labeled me non-compliant, it seems not to matter to him - he is proceeding as always. I'll keep this new tdoc for a little bit - I know the bipolar will return one day, and I know now for sure, sypmtomatically it will be more extreme - and I need to work on this extreme bit some more. I was working on something interesting yesterday, everyone might find interesting. My suicidal depressions of late have been quite hopeless. While I have a worthlessness rebuttal, that has not been the problem. It has been this lack of hope. So I have been putting together a group of songs - I feel the message in them is hope. I plan on burning them to CD, when I get enough of them. Check this one out. Remember the old "Don't Worry Be Happy" song? Lifts my mood for sure. Yes, I am better. Back to myself. That was a long, tough 2 months. Thank you - all of you, for standing by me. I remain Lithium free, and remain believing that was one of the best decisions I ever made. Lithium just totally slugged me out - way too much. I feel better most of the time, anymore. Linda-room42"  [ send green star]
"WRAP - What do "I" do to make myself well" July 23, 2004 8:14 PM

"WRAP - What do "I" do to make myself well I got in a jam this morning. ER had me, and I had shut down. I thought, this is bad - "what do I have to do to make myself well"? I needed to get out of there and go get a smoke. The guards got me, and dumped me in the isolation room. Once locked up tight, I was asked if I wanted a cup of coffee? Again, my WRAP training kicked in - What do I have to do to make myself well? I needed a nap. I got my nap, and my mood switched on me - low to high. The shrink knows me. Last time I saw him was before I escaped the hospital and he handed me 90 day papers - 2 years ago. He offered me a promise and a threat. Promise, in writing, come to hospital if your not feeling safe. All I want is you to be safe, and he signed it. Threat - He could play power games, whether a 3 day hold (I was already on) or a 90 day hold, till you took your Lithium, but then once out, you can stop it again. Or I could just skip that and go get a court order. I didn't think this was a forced drugging state and told him so. His promise means nothing, his clout with his threat is greater. I found the involuntary outpatient commitment statutes: Man, and I was just doing the right thing - making sure my body was still functioning correctly some 12 hours after I had messed up. That was stupid on my part. This is a corner, that you can only die in. Except, I'm fine again - my mood switched. And I darn well better stay fine - there are no other choices. Discussion on Mental Health, et al :) July 23, 2004 7:27 PM

This Discussion Thread will be on all Mental Health issues, and all that relates, et al; all are welcome to post :) "I have a book reccomendation - for bipolars Cognitive - Behavioral Therapy for Bipolar Disorder by Monica Ramirez Basco and A. John Rush The book is for the therapists ... but hey, I can read too LOL I haven't read the book cover to cover, but I will say this - this book describes better then anywhere I have ever seen - the cogitive and seperately the behavioral changes our respective high and low moods put us through. It also describes psychosocial and interpersonal problems. As with WRAP - the idea is to catch the mood shift early in the problem - when there is some chance you can modify the outcome. The book recognizes that a mood gone to far, has gone to far. For instance, I had begun to notice a trend. Preceeding a low, my thinking is going in circles. I am pondering the unknowable, the non senseable - as if these things really had real world answers. I caught myself doing this a couple weeks ago. I knew it was a sign of inpending trouble. I didn't stop doing this LOL I just noticed it and as something I had done before. This book calls it out as a behavioral change - one of indecisiveness. The book speaks to rumination over advantages and disadvantages of each choice in a nonproductive way - that as an exercise, does not lead to a conclusion. Bingo - there are no conclusions to the mental spegghetti I get into. The book suggests the classic problem of making choices - using the advantages / disavantages table for each choice. Well, that won't help me out, I don't think - I am not dealing with either or indecisiveness. But maybe I could shelve pondering the ultimate meaning of the universe until a different time - a time where my brain is functioning better? This is a precurser to a low in me. Once in the low - I realize the futility of my circular questioning. Can I directly effect the low, by disallowing this type of thinking? I don't know - it's worth a shot. But if not that - I just turned up a marker that says things are going to get real bad soon. And I could launch into other actions to mitigate that inpending low. I like the book, so far.
