Following my Heart

My Mother and Step Dad always taught me that animals are a part of this world to, and that because we take their home we should not treat them as pests when they wander.  They need a place to call home to.

I have to laugh when I remember growing up as during the summer we would leave the door open and sometimes wild animals would just wanter into the house,  my mom would not shoo them away she would let them come in and have a bit to eat.  She also fed racoons in her back yards, and birds.

I was that child, the one who would have the stray animals follow her home, I even brought home my share of wild injured animals I found.  We always took them to a vet who knew us and they would always help the animals so we could take it to critter care and make sure it was released.

I remember one day in particular my little brother called me on my cell phone and he was upset.  There was an injured Coyote that had found its way into our yard and was laying down behind the compost.  My brother was not upset because it was in the yard, he was upset because he had called animal control places to help the coyote and they had all said the same thing,  they would only come and euthanize it.  Critter Care would only look after it if we could get it to them.

I came home and went outside to take a look.  It was injured but not beyond help.  We called the vet and they said if we could bring it in they would treat it.

We waited for my step dad (The animal whisperer) to get home.  He and I went in to the back yard and he casually walked over to the Coyote, Picked it up and wrapped it in the blanket.  Cuddled in the blanket the Coyote relaxed and we got into the car and drove to the vet.  The coyote lay still and was calm the whole way to the car.

Upon arriving at the Vet, when my step dad handed off the Coyote, it squirmed and was not happy but the Vet assistants took it into the back room and began treatment.  The next day we picked up the coyote and took it to critter care where it was treated them released into the wild with another pack of Coyotes.

Sometimes, you just have to take matters into your own hands and do the right thing,  it is such a rewarding process when you do.  I will never forget that day.
