15 Rebuttals Trump Supporters Need to Hear

As I watch what I consider to be a disastrous White House administration in action, I’m always drawn to look at what Donald Trump’s supporters have to say about his job performance. Though I disagree strongly with the president on many issues, I genuinely hope to encounter some rational arguments on the other side so I can better understand where they’re coming from.

Today, I checked out an article in the Guardian where reporters asked nine people who attended Trump’s rally in Phoenix to explain their support for the president “in their own words.” Unfortunately, their reasons were full of contradictions.

Uniformly, the interviewees are in favor of a border wall, think Trump is not racist and handled his Charlottesville remarks appropriately and think that any criticism Trump faces is the liberal media’s fault. Below are some of the more egregious quotations from the interviews along with how I’d love to respond to them:

1. Nobody knows what he is going to do, like the North Koreans, which is a good thing. Weve been predictable for too long. – Brad Pontious

I doubt that many Americans share the sentiment that life is a lot better now that we’re uncertain whether or not we’re about to enter a nuclear war with a reckless dictator, but I suppose if that uncertainty makes America more fun for Brad, he picked the right candidate to back.

2. Weve all been in the position of working in a company where we wish we could speak our mind without worrying about the consequences. He can speak his mind without worrying about scaring somebody or worrying about offending somebody. – Jered Pettis

In what world does a man whose main role is maintaining diplomacy not have to worry about the consequences of offending other people? If Jered knows enough to hold his tongue while working a less important job, surely we can expect some similar judiciousness from the president.

3. He should have done more to condemn white supremacists, but I dont think I would have done any better. – Shanna Gallo

If she isn’t sure she could resist the urge to put white nationalists on even ground with those who oppose hate, then she might share some racist impulses, too.  Also, it’s okay to want the president to be better at his job than you yourself would be – it is a pretty important job after all.

4. [I] didnt want someone being investigated by the FBI sitting our presidents seat. Hes doing pretty good so far. – Jillian Henry

Jillian was referring to Hillary Clinton, but by all accounts, Trump isn’t doing so well at avoiding being investigated by the FBI. For a year, the agency has been looking into the Trump campaign’s ties to the Kremlin.

5. People want a president who is not politically correct, who will say it like it is and will not do it because he wants to get elected. – Sylvia Allen

If being politically incorrect is something the people want, how was that not Trump’s strategy for getting elected?

6. He tries as hard as he can. He never stops working. – Patricia Morgan

Trump literally just concluded a 17-day vacation. His own aides have confessed to the press that he spends way too much time watching television.

7. If I recall correctly, one side has a permit to be there legally while the other tore a statue down illegally. – Jered Pettis

It turns out that Jered does not recall the situation in Charlottesville correctly. Counter-protesters did obtain permits to demonstrate in the space. Furthermore, the Robert E. Lee statue was not taken down, it’s still standing in the same spot to this day. That said, it is a lot easier to defend white nationalists when you’ve only retained false information.

8. When you have half the country calling everyone racist, when everyone in the Democratic Party is racist, I dont know what you expect. – John Oldman

In a single sentence, John faults people on the left for wildly labeling conservatives as racists while also calling all Democrats racists. The lack of self-awareness is almost impressive!

9. Given the situation hes dealing with, anybody is better than Clinton or Obama. If you dont like the way Trump is acting, you always have the option to leave the country. – John Oldman (again)

For a man who so adamantly wants a border wall erected, you’d think John would appreciate that most countries don’t just allow people to immigrate in so easily. A lot of Americans don’t have the option to just leave because there’s a lengthy, highly selective process involved. Additionally, John didn’t seem to mind that he complained about Obama for eight years and still stayed in the country.

10. The Democrats are going to continue to protest and, in the process, theyre going to tear this nation apart. The protesters against Trump are haters. I fought for free speech all my life and they dont believe in free speech. – John Oldman (yet again)

Try to make sense of this assertion with me: Protesters, who are exercising their right to free speech, don’t believe in free speech. Meanwhile, John, who supposedly loves free speech, thinks that people who practice free speech are destroying the country. Hmm…

11. I have never met an honest journalist in my life. – John Oldman (one last time)

In that case, it’s interesting that he’s allowing a journalist to represent his perspective in this piece. Here’s hoping that he’s right about dishonest media and that his confounding words have been wildly misquoted.

12. If you said the glass was half full, theyd call you a Nazi and say its half empty. – Bob Neilssen

Earlier in the interview, Bob blamed the violence in Charlottesville on liberals while complimenting the KKK for obtaining a permit. People are probably calling Bob a Nazi based on his own words and actions, not just to be contrarian.

13. [Trump]s got a point about the media. Its hard as a consumer to find an outlet that tells you the basic facts. They should be giving us the facts so a human being with a little bit of brains can make up their own minds. – Brad Pontious

Brad must not be familiar with the research that shows why conservatives are content to toss out the facts. Most Trump voters don’t seek impartial news sources to start, instead overwhelmingly preferring the likes of Fox News that won’t challenge their preexisting beliefs.

14. I voted for [Trump] because of diversity. He actually practices diversity unlike liberals, who dont practice diversity. Obama had this whole country thinking about skin color. – Isaac Powell

I’m not convinced that Isaac knows what diversity means.

15. Do you think Id be that stupid to vote for an actual racist to be in office? – Isaac Powell

Wellllllll…
