5 Things the President Said He Would Do — But Hasn’t

If you need a clear sign that President Donald Trump’s base is becoming weary of waiting for him to actually “Make American Great Again,” Fox News brazenly announced it by adding a chyron under the president’s image with the words, “Trump: Eventually we will get something done.”

But the truth is, with six months in office now under his belt, the amount of promises kept by the new commander in chief remains decidedly underwhelming. Here are five commitments President Trump made during his campaign, none of which he has actually accomplished – thank goodness.

1. Obliterate NAFTA

On the campaign trail, the GOP nominee promised to decimate trade agreements like NAFTA — the North American Free Trade Agreement — claiming that, as a businessman, he could negotiate better deals.

Once he was in office, though, President Trump’s renegotiation of NAFTA didn’t change much of anything at all.

“[H]ere’s the surprising thing: There’s very little in the document that represents a radical break from the rules that have governed free trade between Canada, the US, and Mexico since NAFTA took effect in 1994,” explains Vox’s Zeesham Aleem. “Instead, it’s a document of compromise: It has a few controversial and Trumpian principles in it, but many of its propositions are standard fare for modern free trade agreements. In fact, a number of its most substantial reforms can actually be traced back to Obama-era negotiations over the Trans-Pacific Partnership — the behemoth free trade deal that Trump torpedoed on his first full working day in the White House. In other words, Trump has ended up embracing some of his free trade-loving predecessor’s values instead of repudiating them.”

2. Stop immigrants from taking “American jobs”

A big part of “making America great again” was Trump’s vow to increase jobs for hardworking Americans — as well as his attempt to stir up fear and anger against immigrants. But while xenophobia and racism may have gotten his voters to the polls, now that he’s in office, President Trump has continued to let in foreign workers by granting thousands more worker visas.

“The Department of Homeland Security on Monday announced a one-time increase of 15,000 additional visas for low-wage seasonal workers for the remainder of this fiscal year, a seeming about-face from President Trump’s “Hire American” rhetoric, following heavy lobbying from fisheries, hospitality and other industries that rely on temporary foreign workers,” the Washington Post reports. “The increase represents a 45 percent bump from the number of H-2B visas normally issued for the second half of the fiscal year, said senior Homeland Security officials in a call with reporters.”

One business benefiting from an imported workforce? Trump’s hotels and resorts, of course.

3. Repeal Obamacare

He’s been trying for months, but no matter how much pressure President Trump puts on the Senate, he still can’t wrangle 50 votes to repeal — much less replace — the Affordable Care Act. And now he’s even resorted to threatening his fellow GOP lawmakers.

“Any senator who votes against starting debate is really telling America that you’re fine with Obamacare,” Trump told Republican Senators, according to the Washington Times, who reports that he then turned to Nevada Republican Senator Dean Heller and announced “You weren’t there. You’re going to be,” adding, “He wants to remain a senator, doesn’t he?”

4. Build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico

Yes, we are now one-eighth of the way through President Trump’s first — and maybe last — term in office, and still no concrete measures have been taken to start his signature project: the border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

The House claims that it will put an amendment in a budget bill for next week to fund the wall, and that will probably pass easily. Once it reaches the Senate, though, the bill may will hit a wall of its own.

“Even if this package passes the House next week, Republicans likely know that this is merely a messaging strategy because it will never pass the Senate. Spending bills are subject to a 60-vote hurdle in the upper chamber, which means Republicans ultimately have to rely on Democratic votes to fund the government,” CBS News reports.

5. “Lock her up”

Perhaps the only chant heard more frequently at Trump campaign rallies than “Build the wall!” was “Lock her up!” But despite his promises, President Trump decided almost immediately following election night that he couldn’t care less about investigating his rival, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

“That plays great before the election — now we don’t care, right?” he said dismissively at a December 2016 victory rally, according to The Hill.

Still, this one can’t be totally counted out quite yet. The GOP recently threatened to reopen investigations if Democrats don’t stop looking into President Trump’s ties to Russia during the 2016 campaign. After all, it was always just a political distraction.

Thank goodness he's unable to keep his campaign promises! Hopefully this will disappoint the yahoo's who elected him and he won't get a 2nd term. Although I've signed the Impeach Trump petition so many times that my voice alone ought to rid us of this creep. ;)

The truth of it is that no matter what people say about Trump. All the arguments for or against him. What he does and what he doesn't do, how people see him or think of him, he is just a bad president.......period.

Someone who would want to make "America Great Again" should first be great and reveals his greatness through ACTION.

Obama and the corporate fake Democrats caused this fraud Trump to be elected because of his horrible policies of allowing Wall Street to run our country, and hiring GW Bush’s defense secretary and continuing Bush’s failed policies. People wouldn’t vote for Hillary because she was corrupt, and would have continued Obama’s horrible policies, so Trump won. Obama’s republican healthcare plan was far short of what we needed, which was Medicare for All, so the failed neo liberal corporate fake Democratic policies of Obama and the Democrats caused this crook Trump to be elected. Obama hates Bernie Sanders, because Bernie Sanders is honest, unlike him, and Bernie Sanders wants to end the corruption in the Democratic party, that Obama supports.
