A Vegan-Friendly Taco Place Is Coming From a Most Unexpected Guy

If you’ve seen the movie “Machete” you know actor Danny Trejo is one rough, tough dude. This week, he proved he’s got a sensitive side. Trejo announced he will soon open “Trejo’s Tacos” in Los Angeles, which will offer a significant number of artisan-level vegan tacos.

“Trejo’s Tacos” could have settled for serving up regular meat- or bean-based tacos like so many other Mexican places. For Danny Trejo, what all the other places do wasn’t good enough.

“Here, we wanted to include everybody, so we have a great vegan menu and gluten-free menu,” Trejo, 71, told the Los Angeles Times.

Thankfully, these aren’t your typical “order a bean burrito and leave the cheese off” vegan choices. How about Austin-fried avocado tacos, organic chopped kale salads, black pepper tofu tacos, house-made salsas, quinoa and brown rice, and mung bean tortillas? Of course, there’s non-vegan fare for the omnivores too.

The good news doesn’t stop with the menu, however. “Trejo’s Tacos” will use only freshly made food each day. It will keep nothing overnight. Leftovers won’t be wasted, however. Trejo plans to donate daily leftover food to a local homeless shelter.

“This was a dream of my mom’s really,” Trejo told KABC News. “We kind of just put it together.”

I think we can officially say that Danny Trejo “gets it.” He knows lots of people want to avoid eating animal products, while others want good gluten-free options. He’s made sure his taqueria caters to pretty much everyone who wants a really good Mexican meal.

When the cooking’s done, food isn’t wasted – leftovers go to people who need them. Not to mention he’s making his late mother’s dream come true. Face it, the leather-clad tough guy in the Brady Bunch Snickers commercial is a sweetheart of a man.

It wasn’t always this way. Early in life, Trejo had big problems with drugs and crime. He spent 11 years in prison, some of that time in San Quentin. Upon his release, he turned his life around in a huge way. Trejo lucked into a small movie part while visiting a Hollywood set to support a friend from a 12-step program. Good fortune smiled on him that day and it hasn’t stopped since.

Trejo’s shown his hero side before. Understanding the evils of drug abuse from first hand experience, he’s provided support to organizations that help people fight drug and alcohol addiction.

A staunch animal lover, he’s dad to five rescue dogs. Trejo is also a celebrity supporter of the Best Friends Animal Society, the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary and animal advocacy group.

He’s played dangerous brutes in everything from “Breaking Bad” to “Sons of Anarchy,” but Danny Trejo can play fluffy animals too. Watch “Ruff Life,” a public service announcement Trejo filmed for Friends of Animals, urging everyone to spay or neuter their companion animals:

It turns out Danny Trejo is more than just a pretty face. He’s pretty on the inside too.

Awesome! I live nearby! I love traditional tacos, but some of the vegan options sound pretty yummy, too.

Love Danny Trejo as an actor. Wish I could try his food. And kisses to Danny Trejo for this: A staunch animal lover, he’s dad to five rescue dogs. Trejo is also a celebrity supporter of the Best Friends Animal Society, the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary and animal advocacy group. Glad he turned his life around.
