Another Caged Bear is Saved From Heartbreaking Conditions in Armenia

Animal advocates are celebrating the successful rescue of Balu, a young brown bear who was being kept in heartbreaking conditions in Armenia.

Balu is only believed to be two and a half years old, but she had spent nearly her entire life chained up in a small, filthy cage since she was taken from the wild as a cub. Fortunately, her plight caught the attention of International Animal Rescue (IAR).

BALU HAS NOW BEEN RESCUED!

“We learned of the existence of Balu the bear only a few weeks ago and immediately started making plans for her rescue. This poor creature has been fed on a diet of fizzy drinks and sweets,” said Alan Knight OBE, IAR CEO.

Over the weekend, a team of rescuers, along with police and environmental officers, arrived to help and her rescue was livestreamed on IAR’s Facebook page, giving people around the world an opportunity to watch her be removed from the appalling conditions she was being kept in.

According to IAR, her owner didn’t want to let her go, and there was some pushback from a growing crowd of onlookers, but her freedom was finally negotiated and she was soon sedated.  After she fell asleep, the rescue team was finally able to go into her cage and prepare her for her journey to their rescue center.

IAR added, “She is in shocking physical condition, to say nothing of the trauma she has suffered at being kept in a small squalid cage with a heavy collar and chain around her neck.”

Now, however, she’s free from her past. She will spend some time in quarantine while her health is assessed and will finally get the care and nutritious food she needs.

Sadly, there are many others like Balu who are forced to live in wildly inappropriate conditions. Many of them have been poached from the wild and confined to barren enclosures at restaurants, among other places, just so they can be used as living attractions to draw tourists and to amuse their owners.

In partnership with a local organization and the Armenian government, IAR is working to save bears across the country from cruelty and neglect as part of its Great Bear Rescue.

Rescuers ultimately hope they will be able to rehabilitate and release any who are good candidates, but have vowed to ensure permanent homes in sanctuaries for any bears who are unable to return to the wild.

Some people are really sick to treat an animal in such a horrific way.

AS LONG AS MONEY REIGNS SUPREME, this will continue unresolved. Partnership with local and Armenian government, working to save bears across the country from cruelty and neglect, hoping they will be able to rehabilitate and release any who are good candidates, but have vowed to ensure permanent homes in sanctuaries for any bears unable to return to the wild. One at a time, rescued from captivity and stuffed in a place against nature's plan. Will we ever learn to respect each living, breathing entity and its share in this one planet?
