Another ‘Pro-Family’ Republican Gets Caught in Affair Scandal

Missouri Republican Governor Eric Greitens  found himself neck-deep in scandal after his extra-marital affair was exposed to the public. While he is by no means the first so-called “pro-family” Republican to be caught having sex with someone other than his spouse, he faces far more serious allegations: The woman in the relationship claims that Greitens blackmailed her to keep the affair a secret.

Greitens, a Tea Party first-term governor, hasn’t denied that he was involved in a sexual encounter with a married woman. A recording obtained by the woman’s now ex-husband makes it abundantly clear that in 2015 Greitens — who is also married — invited her to his home after a long-standing flirtation, and that the two engaged in consensual sexual activity.

What is different, however, is that Greitens appears to have photographed the woman without her consent during the encounter, telling her that he would release the photo if she told anyone about the secret affair.

“He stepped back, I saw a flash through the blindfold and he said: ‘you’re never going to mention my name, otherwise there will be pictures of me everywhere,’” the woman told her ex-husband, according to a recording published by News Channel 4.

Greitens ran for governor on a pro-family values platform, declaring “I’m Eric Greitens, I’m a Navy SEAL, native Missourian and most importantly, a proud husband and father.” While his affair was public knowledge — and an issue he admitted and said his family had accepted — there was no indication that Greitens essentially had blackmailed his sexual partner in order to ensure her silence.

Jeneé Osterheldt at the Kansas City Star writes:

[T]he unforgivable, despicable part of this drama is the allegation that Greitens basically used revenge porn against his side-chick. The woman, who has yet to go on the record, confessed to her then-husband. He recorded the conversation and recently gave the tape to St. Louis CBS affiliate KMOV, which aired it Wednesday night. She was his hairstylist. She says he invited her to his home, took her down to the basement and taped her hands to exercise equipment. And then, she says, he blindfolded her and took a nude photo, warning her to never mention his name. If it’s true, this is an abuse of trust, power and basic human decency.

It’s also an illegal act — and one that could lead to the governor being indicted.

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner has announced her intention to launch a criminal investigation into Greitens, stating:

The serious allegations against Missouri Governor Eric Greitens are very troubling. After further consideration, I have decided to launch a formal investigation. It is essential for residents of the City of St. Louis and our state to have confidence in their leaders. They must know that the Office of the Circuit Attorney will hold public officials accountable in the same manner as any other resident of our city. Both parties and the people of St. Louis deserve a thorough investigation of these allegations.

The Republican party in Missouri remains uncommitted on whether or not to defend Greitens. “Most Republicans in the State Legislature have not pulled their support for the governor over the affair, but they have not loudly defended him, either, and some have already suggested he must resign — or, one said, be impeached — if all the allegations leveled against him prove true,” reports the New York Times.

Greitens is putting pressure on fellow Republicans to support him during the investigation, often calling them in conjunction with his wife to tell his version of events — and to blame the allegations on Democratic enemies and a liberal press.

Ironically, this scandal may not be enough to completely derail Greitens’ political career — especially if he is not found guilty of blackmail.

“It’s damaging for sure. Is it over? I don’t know,” Ken Warren, a left-leaning political science professor at St. Louis University told the St. Louis Dispatch. “People who have had affairs have survived, depending on how they’ve handled it. Given what we’ve gone through with (President Donald) Trump, I’m not sure it’s a deal-breaker.”

Of course, affairs and blackmail are never deal-breakers. At least, not if you are a Republican.

Every time I hear politicians use words like "family-man" "pro-life" "deeply religious" I know never to vote for them. Invariably their subconscious mind is trying to cover something up. Just as a conman starts his patter with "to be honest with you".

I don't trust the "holier than thou." Egotistical people are convince they can do what they want and won't be caught.

@Martha Ferris--You are right and I mostly agree with you, but when one party runs on a platform of "Family Values" "pro-life," you need to call them out on that--Big Time, from the roof tops. I will stay out of their bedroom and their life, their personal body and I will cease and desist in judgement in having affairs, paying for their mistresses abortions, when they stay the Hell out of mine and not before!

I agree with Anne M--How stupid could you possibly be to let a cheater, liar, adulterer, pro (hypocrite)-family man take you down the basement, tape you to an exercise machine, blindfold you and take naked pictures of you! For Christ sake--do any of these morons ever learn? He should absolutely resign! Any woman knowingly starting an affair with a married man is pathetic and cruel. He is just another sickening fool, who will be weeping and calling on God, begging his wife to take him back, sobbing about his children, while he humiliates all who loved and trusted him. What a guy!
