Bachmann Wins Ames Straw Poll, Pawlenty Distant Third

The votes are in, and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann had taken the top spot, barely beating out Texas Congressman Ron Paul, who came in 152 votes behind her.

Meanwhile, former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, who has been focusing his sole attention on the Ames straw poll, turning it into a make or break point in his campaign, came in a very distant third with less than half of the votes of either of the top two candidates.

Texas Governor Rick Perry, who spent the day in South Carolina where he was formally announcing for president, came in at 6th place, all via write in ballots. This put Perry in front of former Governor Mitt Romney, the Republican frontrunner, who despite his head of the pack status spent no money and very little time in Iowa to round up support for the poll.

A total of 16,892 ballots were cast.

Full results were:

1. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (4823, 28.55%)

2. Congressman Ron Paul (4671, 27.65%)

3. Governor Tim Pawlenty (2293, 13.57%)

4. Senator Rick Santorum (1657, 9.81%)

5. Herman Cain (1456, 8.62%)

6. Governor Rick Perry (718, 3.62%) write-in

7. Governor Mitt Romney (567, 3.36%)

8. Speaker Newt Gingrich (385, 2.28%)

9. Governor Jon Huntsman (69, 0.41%)

10. Congressman Thad McCotter (35, 0.21%)

The Iowa straw poll was started as a fund-raiser by the RNC. You have to pay $30 for a ballot in order to vote.

The candidates often buy ballots and pass them out. Bachmann bought 6,000 ballots, and received 4,800 some votes.

And that's how the straw poll works, basically it has no meaning except that the winner is rarely the canidiate.

She won 4823 (!) votes, OK?
What matters here is the word "won", not what is it that she actually won.

There have been 16,892 ballots cast. The Iowa population is 3 mln. In 2008, to have an estimate, there were 1.5 mln voters. So, about 0.56 % voters in this state voted for her. There is something to get all fired up about.

That is about what she is going to get at the end of the day.

@Michale M,
The scariest thing ever heard would be Obama getting another four years to screw up our country even more than he has already.

Anyone with a right mind would vote for Bachmann over Obama because she's infinitely more qualified than Obama to lead out country.

@Marco C,
Your quote: "Bachmann won the straw poll.....Bachmann and straw.....what do they have in common"

The answer: They have the thing in commons as Marco C and straw.

What is the scariest thing you have ever heard? Is it "President Bachmann" or is it "President Perry and Vice President Palin"? Both of these scare me. But it has been my experience to not underestimate the stupidity of large groups of people, such as the American public. Seriously, why else is birth control not free, and abortion becoming more illegal each day, and why do gay people not have all the same rights as their non-gay brethren? And why would anybody in their right mind cast any vote at all for Bachmann???

Craig C, I'm about to make your day. President Obama's school, college and law school history are but a few clicks away! I want you to be happy and feel better. I really, really do.

Here's what you do. Find the search box on your internet explorer page. I prefer Google but I have AOL and don't know what you have. When you see live search or something to that effect simply type in: "President Obama's school history" and up will come something you may not recognize. It's called factual information, not spoon fed lies. Real info!

I'm amazed that you don't know the presidents school history which is quite impressive. He also taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago for 10 years. Kinda odd that he is constantly accused of trampling on the constitution. I think he probably knows quite a bit about it, heh? This information is well known to all but Fox news viewers who are considered to be the most uninformed voters in the United States. I doubt they would cover that aspect of our president.

Do you feel better now? Say Uncle! The truth shall set you free!!!
