Bipartisan Bill Would Ban GMO Salmon Completely

Despite public outcry and scientific evidence to the contrary, many say that an FDA approval of AquaBounty’s genetically engineered salmon looms large on the horizon.

Consumer advocacy group Food & Water Watch recently acquired numerous internal documents and emails from the U.S. Department of Interior’s Fish & Wildlife Service that expose scientists’ startling concerns regarding AquaBounty salmon.

Anticipating that the FDA will live up to its reputation of ignoring the public’s desire for food safety and transparent labeling of GMOs, lawmakers from Alaska, Oregon and Washington have introduced a backup plan to protect American consumers and wild fish populations.

Earlier this year, U.S. Senators Mark Begich (D-Alaska), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Representative Don Young (R-Alaska) introduced a bill that would ban frankenfish entirely (Bill# S. 230/H.R. 521).

Or, if that fails, an alternate bill (Bill# S. 229/H.R. 520) would require companies to at least put a sticker on any product that contains frankenfish to let Americans know what they are eating.

“Frankenfish are uncertain and unnecessary,” said Rep. Young. “The assessments of these ‘fish’ are flawed at best and the threat to the population of our wild salmon stock is unacceptable.

“Additionally, consumers have the right to know that they are eating a supposedly sterile fish spliced with the growth hormone of a Chinook and the genetic code of an ocean pout. We cannot allow these alien fish to infect our stocks and I will put forth every effort to ensure they stay in the labs where they belong. I choose Alaskan wild salmon every time.”

In addition to Begich, Murkowski and Young, the bill to ban GMO fish is co-sponsored by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Washington) and the bill requiring labeling, should GE fish get approved, is co-sponsored by Sen. Murray and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon).

TAKE ACTION! Friends of the Earth has endorsed both these bills as a way to protect people from the dangers of genetically engineered foods, and asks you to show these brave lawmakers your support:

Don Young (R-Alaska) is sponsoring this bill? This is amazing. Well, he knows salmon is not only consumed by the "wetbacks". If it was the case, he wouldn't care at all.

Anyway, I hope the bill passed.

Farmed salmon has proven to more like production farms for cattle and chickens. They are unhealthy. A synthetic astaxanthin is used to colour the farmed salmon as there is no colour.
Here we go chemical additives to copy wild salmon. Natural astaxanthin provides us with quality omega 3's and this is why it is considered heart healthy..... unnatural NO!
GE salmon are modified to grow larger and faster. Who knows what they did to this fish but no doubt in my mind it is terrible for the enviroment and will destroy wild salmon over time due to being such large fish. Farmed salmon get out of their containers; I have no doubt fast moving larger young salmon will do the same. I only eat wild salmon.
This is great news.

luck to those senators,my

This is great news. I am praying it does something to bring more awareness and pressure to stop GMO salmon. As a Canadian, BC will be sorely affected. That is our source for wild salmon.
What people do not realize when buying fresh salmon over the counter, they are buying farmed fish. I asked grocery stores, and they tell me to comes from Atlantic Canada, all farmed. It looks great due to added colour from synthetic astaxanthin. It is a chemical based colourant duplicated to be like astaxanthin, found naturally in wild salmon. Natural astaxanthin is very healthy to eat which is why wild salmon have this colour i(omega 3's). Synthetic astaxanthin was simply made to give GE salmon it's natural colour in an unnatural way.
I refuse to eat farmed salmon and only one grcery store labels farmed vs

selective breeding is not anything like inserting the genes of another species into something else. those who keep defending gmos by comparing them to selective breeding really have no idea what they are talking about. Ban all GMOs. and until then we need to require truthful labeling.
