Care2 Members Create Petitions to Stop School Shootings

Following a tragic incident like the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, itís hard not to feel utterly helpless. While curling up into a ball and shutting out the rest of the world might be a common coping mechanism, the truth of the matter is that without action, events like these are going to continue.

Thatís why several Care2 members have decided to take onus and try to bring about change in their own way. Following the news out of Parkland, they went to Care2ís petition-making page to start petitions in an effort to help prevent the next school shooting. Below are just 5 examples.

(Note: The proceeding petitions have been written by Care2 readers and do not necessarily reflect the position of Care2 or its staffers.)

1. GIVE NRA DONATIONS TO GUN VIOLENCE SURVIVORS

Care2 member Amanda H. has a novel idea: asking all Florida politicians who have accepted campaign contributions from the NRA to donate that money to the victims of gun violence.

Calling out Senator Marco Rubio, Governor Rick Scott, and Attorney General Pam Bondi by name, Amanda hopes that, with help from your signatures, she can make this moral obligation a trend.

2. DESIGNATE THE NRA AS A DOMESTIC TERRORIST ORGANIZATION UNDER THE USA PATRIOT ACT

In his petition, Pierre L. argues that the government should reclassify the National Rifle Association as a terrorist organization. That may sound far-fetched at first, but Pierre makes a pretty interesting case by citing portions of the USA PATRIOT Act itself to show how the NRA functions as a domestic terrorist.

If the NRA can be banned from donating to political campaigns, their influence would quickly disappear.

3. END THE NRAíS CONTROL OF CONGRESS

Cody Wait also laments the NRAís role in mass shootings and wants to take a different approach to eliminating the organizationís political influence: having the voters render it useless.

Codyís petition is less of a petition and more of a pledge. He asks†for people to sign his petition if they are willing to commit to never voting for a candidate who has accepted money from the NRA. With a lot of signatures, that would put legislators on notice that the people are watching who is funding their campaigns.

4. GUN CONTROL AGE RESTRICTIONS ON ASSAULT WEAPONS

Care2 reader Ken W. canít help but wonder how,† at the age of 19, the shooter legally got his hand on an assault rifle. Ken wants to see the age limit for purchasing a deadly weapon increase to at least 21.

Itís a moderate change, but allowing would-be shooters to gain a little more perspective and maturity certainly canít hurt matters. As Ken points out, if society has decided that 19-year-olds arenít responsible enough to handle drinking alcohol, why should they have unfettered access to deadly weapons?

5. SOS Ė SAVE OUR STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL SHOOTERS

An anonymous petition writer explains how abhorrent gun violence in schools is and offers a seemingly simple solution for tackling this issue: metal detectors.

The writer contends that since tax dollars fund public schools, thereís no reason that the cost of metal detectors and security canít be added to school budgets to ensure the studentsí safety. With enough signatures, this Care2 reader hopes Congress will allocate the money for these security measures.

Over to You

If you have an idea to tackle gun violence that could use the support of the Care2 community behind it, why not start a petition of your own? Rather than sitting back and doing nothing, take a few minutes and use Care2ís easy platform to demand change.

What Parkland did is further divide the nation. Half saying we need to ban military weapons in the hands of civilians and half saying everybody should have the right to own any gun they please. What we need to do--what our legislators need to do--is work together to come up with a viable solution. The "stand your ground" on whether the NRA is a terrorist organization or everybody has the right to own all weapons isn't helping. Our children need to be safe. Counseling for bullies and their victims would help. Some victims hold their anguish inside until it virtually explodes.
