Care2 Success! Student Wins Right To Wear “Jesus Is Not A Homophobe” Shirt

On last year’s Day of Silence, Ohio high school student Maverick Couch wore a t-shirt to school that said “Jesus Is Not A Homophobe,” but Waynesville High School Principal Randy Gebhardt ordered him to turn the shirt inside out.

When Maverick asked to wear the shirt again this past fall, Gebhardt threatened him with suspension. Lambda Legal sued on Maverick’s behalf, and has officially won the case, including $20,000 for damages, costs, and attorneys’ fees. Couch can now wear his T-shirt to school any day he chooses. The school district and principal agreed on May 21 to have a judgment entered against them.

Though Maverick is set to graduate this weekend, he ensures the freedom of expression is preserved for all students in Wayne Local Schools.

Thank you, Care2 activists! Over 26,000 of you signed our petition supporting Maverick Couch, and helped him to achieve this victory!

What is the Day of Silence?

In case you are wondering,  the National Day of Silence, sponsored by GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, is a day of action in which students across the country take a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. Through their activities students can speak out against harassment and organize for change in their schools and communities.

As a teacher, I have experienced this when students show me a note stating that they will not speak in class that day, as a sign of protest against LBGT harassment in schools. And I have admired these students for standing up for their convictions.

From Lambda Legal:

Couch says:

I just wanted to wear my shirt. The shirt is a statement of pride, and I hope other students like me know that they can be proud, too.

Lambda Legal Senior Staff Attorney Christopher Clark says:

We’re very happy for Maverick and all LGBT students in Ohio. If school officials had any doubt before, it’s clear now: First Amendment rights apply to all students on every day of the year, and efforts to silence LGBT youth will not go unchallenged.

Congratulations to Maverick Couch, and thank you, Care2 members!

I think its absolutely wonderful! First and most,, that the winning case involved Jesus. Which sadly enough is being taken iut of schools etc.. because it offends s non believer...! frankly that's a step in one awesome direction! God Bless the decision makers on that one! And God Bless the child being strong enough to wear the shirt! ANITA W.... sister... AAAMMMENNNN!!! Couldn't have said it better myself!! and TO SHUREE.. . in alll due respect... know ehat you're saying before you do please... God made ua ALL.. ans we were already BORN INTO SIN... therefore, how are homesexuals that were created by God, and born sinners to begin with... Go out and create sin?? just by being yhe person God had Created?

Jesus was not a homophobe but in the same truth he was not gay either. So respect the man for what he was, is, and is to come. What is a shame now is the child who is suppose to be the embodiment of Christ today, has suffered so much sexual abuse through mind control by those jealous of him, and those who hate Jesus. See they want him to be a gay Jesus, which is sick if you think about it because this is not the natural nature of this child.

The antichrist today is a gay man but he will put on a front of liking women. So they want to fool the masses by trying to make the real Christ child to be this way, because the followers and organizations of the antichrist will defile the one they hate the most. The child molesters who do this should die, because they do it with intent of hurting a child, his family, Christ, Holy angels, saints, and God. Hollywood is in on it, so they are definitely antichrist. They makes jokes about her child be gay when they know every time he closes his eyes he is subject to abuse through mind control by England(the seat of Satan) and our government.

Just in time for graduation, but Maverick paved the way. Proud of it and that $20,000 will pay for a good bit of college. Make sure though, that unless it advocates violence that the conservative students have freedom of speech too.

Whatever happened to what is said in the bible "God created us in his image"? Doesn't this mean we are ALL a reflection of God? Gay, straight, black, white, man, woman?
