Elizabeth Edwards Cancer Spreads

Elizabeth Edwards, former wife of Senator and Presidential hopeful John Edwards, has been bravely battling cancer since 2004.  Sadly, it appears that fight may no longer be winnable.

Elizabeth Edwards’ cancer has spread, and her health has deteriorated, multiple sources told WRAL News Monday.

Edwards, 61, the wife of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, was briefly hospitalized recently, but she is now at home, and her family and friends are lending their support.

Elizabeth Edwards was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, which went into remission but returned in 2007 while her husband launched his 2008 presidential run.  The couple disclosed the illness while continuing on the campaign trail.

The cancer subsequently moved on to her bones, where it was determined to be incurable but treatable.  USA Today reports that it has now spread to her liver, and that doctors are now advising she forgo any additional treatment.  A statement to People Magazine reads:

“Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive. She is resting at home with family and friends.”

John and Elizabeth Edwards legally separated in January of 2010 after it was disclosed that John was having an affair with a campaign videographer.   Due to North Carolina’s mandatory one year separation period, the couple never officially divorced.

All I can think of is what a brave woman she has been and what a bastard John Edwards is. He spent 30 years with her as she supported all his efforts in politics but he wouldn't stand by her as she battled for her life. Well, he can breathe easy now, he doesn't have to get a divorce...I can still see that other woman when she was on Oprah and thought...that is what he chose????? I am soooooo thankful he didn't win any bid for the Presidency or Vice Presidency. Hopefully we will never have to hear about him or his escapades or the tramps he chooses to be with.
Elizabeth showed what she is made of...strength and dignity to the end...God bless her and her children.

What a shame that she had to die at such a young age. (Yes, I consider 61 young.) My heart goes out to her three children. Not only to lose their mother, but to lose her only weeks before Christmas is particularly sad.

I hope the end was peaceful. She was a brave woman. Be at peace, Elizabeth.

I just heard on the news, she died 10am today. I could never have had her courage, her braveness in spite of all the blows life dealt her. She was one classy woman. I am so sad for her young children.I hope they are old enough to retain their memories of a wonderful mother.
