Fox News “Expert”: Birth Control Now, Manicures Next? [VIDEO]

For Fox News, a “fair and balanced debate” seems to involve pitting an unreasonable, inaccurate conservative “expert” against a respected progressive figure.  Poor Jehmu Greene, the former president of the Women’s Media Center, was on America’s Newsroom with Sandy Rios, the Vice President of Family PAC Federal, the “leading pro-family conservative political action committee in Illinois.” Their topic?  The recent decision to require all insurers to cover birth control and other women’s health services without co-pays.

Greene put forward all of the reasons why access to birth control is crucial for women, explaining that the move was a “text-book definition of win-win.”  Rios, however, lambasted the policy change as “la-la land,” saying,

“Is the White House out of their mind? Does the West Wing not know what the left wing is doing? We have $14 trillion in debt and now we’re going to cover birth control, breast pumps, counseling for abuse? Are we going to do pedicures and manicures as well?”

She then went on to compare the United States to “Red China,” and railed against the “uncontrolled sexual behavior” that birth control access would produce.  Clearly, Rios is on the same page as Bill O’Reilly, who recently declared that most women are “blasted out of their minds” while having sex.

Greene responds to Rios gracefully and far more reasonably than I would have been able to do.  But if this is the future of “fair and balanced debate” — well, I’m pretty terrified.

Oh good grief!! Just because a woman uses birth control does not mean she is having all kinds of sex with multiple partners. I thought the rebuttal to that "argument" was calm and sane...way nicer than I could've managed. Oh, and "fair and balanced" and "Fox" don't even belong in the same sentence.

Quite frankly, although I whole-heartedly support this measure in the above debate I think that Ms. Greene did a rather poor job. She didn't respond at all to Ms. Rios' attacks regarding the cost of birth control, which was her strongest argument, and in that respect let the pro-choices community down.

Rios uses way too much demagogy in her arguments. This annoys me, verily. But it may appeal to those who don't recognize it... maybe the people with lower education?

I've never had any manicure or pedicure except that of 'cut the nails, file the sharp edges, maybe paint them' which I do myself. And the fact that I've never had any professional manicure isn't going to change my life for the worse. If I never had professional birth control I'd have at least one baby by now (I'm 19). Which would severely damage my chances of studying in university. So, yeah.

I have been birth control since I was 13 (I am currently 26). I had to get on birth control or bleed to death. Birth control isn't taken just to not get pregnant. There are many health issues that birth control corrects. Fox News needs a wake up call. Women like me need birth control.

The wealthiest people in the world only represent 1% of the population. That means when the revolution comes, it will be 99 to 1. Those aren't very good odds.
