How Does Ben Carson Still Have a Job? 5 Fireable Offenses

Serious question: how does Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson still have a job?

Not long before accepting a cabinet position, Carson said he lacked the government experience necessary for the job, quipping, “Having me as a federal bureaucrat would be like a fish out of water.” President Donald Trump nominated him anyway, perhaps thinking he needed some African American representation in his White House.

Since then, Carson has failed to impress by just about any metric. Here are some of the lowlights of his tenure, emphasizing his need to be replaced with someone who does care for the agency’s mission:

1. MAJOR LACK OF EXPERTISE

When Carson appeared before the House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday, Democratic reps took the opportunity to give him a basic quiz on terms that anyone in his field should be familiar with. Repeatedly, he failed to be able to define meanings.

Most glaringly, was his answer to Rep. Katie Porter’s question about an “REO.” Carson at first thought she was referring to an Oreo cookie, before being unable to explain the acronym: real estate owned.

Carson then followed up that hearing embarrassment by posing for a picture with a package of Oreos. For him to revel in his ignorance about his important government position goes to show how un-seriously he takes his position.

2. ELABORATE FURNITURE PURCHASES

Carson faced a lot of criticism after buying a $30,000 dining room set and $8,000 dishwasher for his government office, but those purchases weren’t just wasteful, they were also illegal.

The Government Accountability Office finally weighed in on the incident, saying that Carson broke the law by not giving Congress advanced notice of the acquisitions, which is required of furniture purchases above $5,000.

A year ago, Carson blamed the purchase on his wife, (what are wives good for it not to play scapegoat?) however released emails showed that Carson himself was involved in selecting the furniture.

3. NOT WORKING MUCH

Caron’s daily schedules, a matter of public record, show a man who doesn’t put much effort into his job. His schedule is pretty bare, with only one meeting with senior staffers per week, whereas most cabinet positions consult with their senior teams on a daily basis.

The schedule also reflects that on many Fridays he either takes off early or does no work at all in order to fly to his mansion in Florida. According to staffers, Carson’s leadership conveys a “lack of urgency” in terms of getting much done.

4. LYING TO CONGRESS ABOUT TRANSGENDER RULE

At the most recent Congressional hearing, Carson assured lawmakers that HUD was “not currently anticipating changing” regulations that prevented homeless shelters from kicking out transgender people. Literally the next day, however, HUD did announce that it would be tossing out this regulation so shelters could discriminate against trans and gender non-conforming individuals.

Either he blatantly lied to Congress or he left the meeting and immediately got to work on screwing over transgender people in direct contradiction to what he had just told the representatives.

5. NO ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO SPEAK OF

The work he’s accomplished during his first couple years as head of HUD has been underwhelming to say the least. Carson got rid of rules designed to prevent housing segregation, which is hardly a step in the right direction, so – thanks? There’s also that fight he led to get people in poverty to pay triple the rent they were currently paying for federal housing. Fortunately, that didn’t come to pass, but it really shows how out of whack Carson’s priorities were in the first place.

He has reached the limit of his competency with this job. Still can't imagine him as a surgeon. Would you close your eyes and let him work on you?

Not only is he not qualified for his job, he is not trying to educate himself in that respect.

Just as trump has done deliberately to women, he too has deliberately put in a man of color that he lknew would be hopeless. Decisions are made behind the scenes without any real interference and it discredits all people of color as being inept
