Is It Time To Start Drug Testing Politicians?

The latest craze in Republican run legislatures is a push to force any person receiving government aid to do a mandatory drug screening before he or she can receive benefits.  Despite the fact that the condition has been declared a violation of the fourth amendment and therefore unconstitutional, even more states seem to be contemplating issuing their own law anyway.

So, if lawmakers are going to continue to pass unconstitutional laws for little reason other than forcing a group of people who have no other choice to submit to drug testing to get government funds, why not expand the people who have to subject themselves to it.

Yes, lawmakers, it’s time for you all to pee in a cup.

It seems only fair.  After all, if it’s necessary to ensure that government dollars aren’t being spent on drugs, shouldn’t we hold the taxpayer funds used to pay political salaries up to the same scrutiny? So says Rep. Scott Holcomb,  a Democratic lawmaker in Atlanta, Georgia.  Holcomb states simply, “if required for the poor, we [lawmakers] need to do it, too.”

So how likely is a lawmaker to be willing to stand that sort of indignity?  Pretty unlikely, if Florida Governor Rick Scott is any indication.  While holding a press conference, he was asked by a Daily Show reporter to please submit to a drug test of his own, while a plastic cup was passed through the press gaggle, and up to the front of the room.  Scott declined, despite the fact that the reporter said everyone would be willing to turn around to provide him with some privacy.

Shouldn’t all recipients of any sort of tax dollars be subject to the same scrutiny?  Especially politicians, who receive far more income from the government than those who get welfare, student loans or food stamps?

Let’s see mandatory drug testing be applied fairly, if it is to be applied at all.  Pee in the cup, politicians.  After all, it’s for the children.

Why does the constitution shield cops and politicians from illegal drug tests but not us we the people?

I love the idea of drug testing them. To get a job, you have to get drug tested. To play sports, you have to be drug tested. conservitives want people on welfare to get drug tested...why don't we drug test our elected leaders?

Who will perform the tests in the lab? The RepubliCON-artists have it covered. They will make sure that THEY don't appear dirty in that way; they are just completely dirty in everything else having to do with politics.

We should ask Congressman "Good Time Charlie" Charlie Wilson, oops, he died, but not of cocaine use, not this time. Those dudes in Washington sure know to have good time on your dime.

They act like they're on crack or PCP. They do things that make no sense to the rest of society, and think they're invincible. I say test the HELL out of them. Test them till they have nothing left to test.

If we're going to forever expand this loser "war on drugs," then the ones who started that war should be subject to their nonsensical tactics. As an attorney, I believe that drug testing without particularized suspicion is un-American; but, if politicians want to continue requiring citizens to do it, then they should live by their own rules. So, yes. Drug test all candidates for public office and, while we're at it, require all candidates and elected officials to pass regular tests on the U.S. Constitution in order to qualify as a candidate or remain in office--they are, after all, required to take an oath to preserve, protect and defend the provisions contained in that document. How can they do that if they're on drugs or don't know what the U.S. Constitution requires?

Politicians should not only be drug-tested, but also get psych evaluations for mental illness. Some of them are really out in left field.

ALL politicians should be drug tested and also given a psych evaluation as well. Let's start with Rick Scott and Scott Walker.....

Given the high level of responsibility that politicians have in their hands and the potential wreaking mayhem, death, wars and disasters with their bad decisions the answer to their being drug tested has to be an unequivocal yes. In addition I would have them tested for alcohol use whilst on duty and before being allowed to stand for election, tested for sanity, a basic level of education and the ability to think logically with at least some level of general knowledge. I doubt that this will happen and we will continue with the practice of being represented by drunk, drugged, stupid uneducated power crazed obsessive lunatics.

Apparently there are people in the UK that believe that we Americans are bigots and we should just bring out the pitchforks and tourches. WE in the USA that have decency and kindness and love to give, do not share in your comment. We prefere the shock and awe method!!
