Judge Rules That Trump Administration Must Stop Forcibly Drugging Migrant Children

If you buy into President Trump’s baseless and xenophobic vitriol, immigrants are coming to the United States to exploit government welfare, all while abusing and selling drugs. But in a darkly ironic twist, now it seems that the U.S. has also been also doling out drugs — psychotropics, to be exact — to migrant children separated from their families without any kind of parental consent.

Currently hundreds of children remain separated from their families well after a court ordered deadline for reunions.

The Shiloh Treatment Center, a migrant children detention center near Houston, Texas, has been doing just this. Accounts suggest that the staff illegally signed parental consent forms themselves so that they could administer drugs to children against their will.

Staff members administered pills and injections to children without their consent. And, in some cases, the children were not told what they were being given or why. After taking the drugs, many reported symptoms such as depression, nausea and weight gain. One young girl was given a combinations of drugs, and she’s since had such severe tremors that she’s unable to walk without falling.

Unsurprisingly, officials at the Shiloh Treatment Center deny these charges, stating that they only administered psychotropic drugs to children under extreme circumstances. However, the reposts suggest an attempt by the center’s staff to chemically pacify unhappy minors — hardly emergencies.

These practices came to light after a federal lawsuit was filed against the facility. U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee recently issued a court order which forbids staff at the Shiloh Treatment Center from giving such drugs to detained minors without approval from a judge. Her ruling found that the facility violated a 1997 ruling requiring detained migrant minors be placed in the least restrictive conditions possible.

Gee’s ruling also cited an incident in which a child detainee was denied water as punishment.

This is nothing short of state-sanctioned child abuse. Not only has the Trump administration tried to normalize the abduction of children, now the country is also forcing powerful psychotropic drugs onto these young migrants.

The administration’s xenophobic fixation on ousting Latino immigrants from the country has not only enabled, but also encouraged the abuse of children due to a completely manufactured public panic over MS-13 – a U.S.-based street gang.

If the Trump administration wanted to devastate an entire generation of Latino immigrants, there could hardly be a more effective way to do so. Some children may never see their parents again. Others will, but a young, developing mind plied with psychotropic drugs may be forever changed.

Fortunately, Judge Gee’s ruling against Shiloh Treatment Center was soon followed up by an order that similar facilities in Texas be investigated to see whether or not drugs have been illegally administered elsewhere.

The fact that some conservatives argue that this is somehow the unavoidable consequence of “breaking the law” — the abduction and drugging of children — will some day be seen as one of the darker moments of modern American history.

Take Action!

Despite Judge Gee’s ruling, there’s no reason to believe that such abuse is not occurring at other detention facilities. And there’s only way to eliminate this disturbing practice: an audit of every private facility housing migrant children, no exceptions.

Tell U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Department of Homeland Security head Kirstjen Nielsen that they have a duty to ensure that the U.S. is not in the business of abusing children. Add your name to this Care2 petition, and make your voice heard!

Roberta G. - I agree with you 100%. Children are my passion. I would do anything to protect them, and I know you would, too. Let's keep working to stop the insanity that trump has inflicted on desperate immigrant families simply because he is a racist and a soulless fool.

Susanne...Thank you for liking my reference. I do a lot of reading, and I remember much of it. This situation is sickening, and the people who approve of hurting children are utterly despicable. My heart bleeds for the 5 year old depicted in the article, as well as all the other kids abused and terrorized. Hard to think of a 5 year old so frightened that he is wanting to die.

Roberta G. - My sincerest apologies! I confused you with Rhoberta E. I do most of my commenting while most people are sleeping, and my eyes are tired and watery. I'll be more careful in the future. But I did appreciate the article! Thanks for sharing it!
