Kansas Republicans Just Declared War on Transgender Children

The Republican Party of Kansas has voted to officially adopt a zero-tolerance approach to all “efforts to validate transgender identity.”

On Saturday, February 17, the state’s GOP committee voted to pass the resolution after questions were raised about the party’s approach to gender and sexuality. While the platform mentioned opposing same-gender marriage, it offered few concrete details on how the party approached trans inclusion.

The chief proponent of the resolution is Eric Teetsel, Governor Sam Brownback’s son-in-law. Teetsel told the Witchita Eagle that he backed this policy out of love and that “an ideology that says you can determine your own gender identity is broken and it’s going to lead to a lot of pain… It is concern for the well-being of others that drives us to seek out what is true and not just for society, but for them personally.”

The resolution states:

Whereas many have sought to normalize transgenderism and define gender according to one’s self-perception apart from biological anatomy; and…

Whereas, some Kansas public schools are encouraging parents and teachers to affirm the feelings of children experiencing gender dysphoria; and

Whereas, some Kansas public schools are allowing access to private facilities according to children’s self-perception of gender and not according to biological sex; and

Whereas, these cultural currents run counter to God’s created order and violate the dignity of every human being.

The resolution goes on to explain that the Kansas Republican party recognizes that dignity, but it then says:

We oppose efforts to surgically or hormonally alter one’s bodily identity to conform with one’s perceived gender identity; that we oppose all efforts to validate transgender identity; … that public schools should not undermine the values of parents who do not agree with transgenderism; and that students have a reasonable expectation of privacy and safety at school.

It’s difficult to overstate how deeply injurious this resolution is. Parts of the document contain complete denial about the health consensus surrounding trans identity: Gender affirmation is an appropriate and healthy way of helping people who experience gender dysphoria.

Furthermore, to state as the resolution does that the party affirms the human dignity of LGBT people and then flirt with the tired and easily disproved lie that trans people are a threat to cisgender students is absolutely appalling. The Kansas Republican party’s attempts to rehash those arguments — despite the mountains of evidence that show trans-affirmed spaces are beneficial and do not lead to sexual harassment — speaks to the fact that this about an ideological agenda and not true concern.

Lastly, the fact that the Republican party of Kansas is elevating its narrow interpretation of the “God’s design” argument demonstrates that it is not interested in facts or compassion and would rather push a narrow religious viewpoint.

Shortly after the vote, Equality Kansas director Tom Witt posted his thoughts on Facebook:

Denying science and attacking schoolchildren in the name of religion is not a recognition of “dignity.” This is a cheap election year attack by Sam Brownback’s son-in-law, and yet another attempt to dehumanize those who do not fit inside the narrow world view of Brownback, his family, and his wing of the Republican party. Equality Kansas is incredibly disappointed that Kansas Republicans, on a day they should be focused on protecting children, promote such an undignified and crass assault.

At a time when the federal government has turned its back on trans children and refuses to enforce gender identity protections under the Education Act, this kind of resolution has an even greater sting.

This does throw down the gauntlet, though: Defeating the Republican party in this year’s elections in states like Kansas isn’t just crucial for liberal policy making; it’s the only way to effectively protect the mental health and safety of some of our nation’s most vulnerable children.

you know, I think it's just fine to ask people what they wish to be called And, in my whole life I expect there will be only a handful of people in my bedroom, so mostly I don't care what someone else's gentalia is like

Too bad ''hell'' is only a myth--I'd enjoy imagining every one of these inhumane bigots roasting there.

I agree that this is all overwhelming to many of us and some find this topic hard to think about let alone talk openly about. It is with us and has been with us for eternity and not just humans! I have known animals born hermaphrodites as well as children. Often the decision to operate to a parent chosen sex can be tantamount to suicide to a child forced to be what their parents wanted and not what the child really was. Thank goodness these days more parent choose to wait until the child is 3-5 yrs discovering the true direction their child is. True love! We humans have been genetically modifying seeds to animals to inventing medications to plastics that have ALL added to Hormonal changes to our children and grand children...! So who do you want to blame? It matters not because this is with us and is real and these are living beings that we are dealing with, no matter if you or I like it or not. We have a duty of love and compassion to every single child for whoever they are. As for God... well He assures us He only looks at the heart...not colour race religion or gender!

@ Nena C : are you really that stupid or retarded ?? Would prefer to be retarded, then people should and could forgive you. Biology and Science have erased many misunderstandings. So being in 2018, I rather believe in science as far as transgender people are concerned. Have some more prayers, may be you will be enlightened.

@ Jenn C : really ?? I think it would be better is you looked up some matters on google. It is so easy nowadays to learn something about all kind of things. And when you completed your self study, may be you could re-write another comment.

I really believe that Mr. Teetsel is an under developed primate, but certainly NOT a human being with a heart !! You do not CHOOSE your gender. You have it the moment you are still in your mother's womb, and one can fight as hard as he can, but will never succeed to change it or be happy. Some very young children of 3 / 4 years know already that they are not a "boy" or not a "girl". Many difficulties are lying ahead of them, and they risk to be put on the street as soon as they tell their parents. Others don't feel good for 20 or 30 years, and then realize what the cause is. How many young people did not commit suicide because they are NOT ACCEPTED ? Now that science has confirmed that sexual orientation is not a punishment by God, or that they are possessed by the Devil, it is time we also accept this. Transgender people don't have an easy life. Before the whole procedure is started, they are scrutinized from top to bottom and inside out. It is not just "saying" it !! Some physical aspects can not be changed completely, unless you have heaps of dollars. Transgender women have sometimes a very heavy, manly voice. Despite training and instructions from a logopediste, they can not alter it completely. The nose sometimes also is a problem. The Republicans are a bunch of old hypocrite dictators, and have to stop oppressing people.
