More Than 200 Dogs Saved as Another Dog Meat Farm is Closed in South Korea

Rescuers are celebrating saving more than 200 dogs as another dog meat farm in South Korea is closed down for good.

An estimated 2.5 million dogs are raised and slaughtered for their meat every year in South Korea, which is the only country that allows intensive farming of dogs for human consumption.

While the numbers are staggering, animal advocates are continuing to raise awareness about the conditions dogs are kept and killed in within this industry, working towards seeing it banned, and rescuing those they can.

This week, more than 200 dogs were saved in Gyeonggi-do by a team from Humane Society International (HSI), which has been working with people who raise dogs for meat to help them close down and transition into other lines of work.

According to HSI, in this case it was a 71-year-old farmer who had been operating for 14 years that approached them for help. He’ll soon be expanding a medicinal herb farm instead.

“When I first started this farm I had heard that the dog meat industry was booming and I thought it would be a safe retirement plan. But the fact is eating dog meat has been on the decline ever since, and these days so few people want to eat dog that I’m actually losing money. I’ve wanted to stop dog farming for a while but I didn’t know how to make it happen until a former dog farmer told me about HSI’s scheme to turn dog farms into new businesses. I think there will be a lot of interest from other dog farmers wanting to quit too, because it’s not just about saving the dogs but about helping us farmers too, and I appreciate that,” said Farmer Lee.

Thanks to this cooperative partnership, he’ll get a new livelihood and the dogs will soon be starting over in entirely new lives.

The dogs, who range in breed, age, size and health, will now be flown to an emergency shelters in the U.K, U.S. and the Netherlands, while the majority of them will be headed to Canada, where they’ll get the love, care and medical attention they need before finding forever homes.

In all, this rescue effort marks the 13th dog meat farm that HSI has helped close down in South Korea, and public opposition there continues to grow against it, particularly among younger generations. HSI is hopeful that this model can be used as a solution to close down the remaining farms and bring this brutal industry to an end.

“Across Asia, momentum is building to end the dog meat trade. Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore already have bans in place, with Indonesia recently pledging a ban, and the authorities in Hanoi, Vietnam also committing to ending the cruel trade. So the time is right for South Korea also to embrace change. We stand ready to be a part of that change, and would welcome government officials to come and see our farm closure scheme for themselves. Phasing out the brutal trade by working with farmers is the way forward, we just need the government to adopt this scheme and take it nationwide,” said Nara Kim, HSI’s South Korea dog meat campaigner.

Save these beautiful souls.....grow your vegetables, fruit trees, etc. it will benefit both you and all animals. Bottom line: we do not need to slaughter animals for meat to survive. Thanks for sharing.
