No, Senator Collins, Threat To Raise Money for Opponent Isn’t a “Bribe”

Senator Susan Collins will not be bribed! … mainly because no one has bribed her. Upset that progressive groups in her state have collected money to give to a 2020 opponent of Collins in the event that she votes to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Collins labeled the fundraising “an attempt to bribe” her.

Actually that’s democratic participation, not a bribe. Assuming that groups that support reproductive rights aren’t happy with a senator who backs a Supreme Court nominee with some worrisome writing on abortion, of course they should use their collective energy to support a candidate that better reflects their views next election.

It’s not like they’re paying Collins to vote no on Kavanaugh – maybe that could be construed as a bribe. If Collins votes no, the money is simply refunded electronically to the donors, whereas she votes yes, the money stays in the account and goes to a Democratic challenger in 2020.

If anything, her constituents are giving her a fair warning to live up to her own pledge. Collins promotes herself as someone who votes to protect the right to choose, but now says she’s satisfied that Kavanaugh considers Roe v. Wade settled precedent. That’s at odds with Kavanaugh’s previous record, though, and an email of his carves out a lot of room for the Supreme Court to overturn the precedent, indicating which way he’s really leaning.

Collins is being willfully obtuse on this issue, so cheers to the Maine voters who have raised $1.3 million to challenge her in the next cycle. They’re doing the best they can to protect liberties and a woman’s control over her body, and if Collins wants to smear such an action as a “bribe,” all the more reason to put someone better in office.

Does she consider the millions she’s received in donations from private industries to be considered bribes? She wound up voting for the Republican tax cut to the cheers of American corporations, so I’m sure they considered their investment in her money well spent. That seems more like bribery to me.

The bottom line is that it’s time for liberals to stop romanticizing Susan Collins. She might criticize Trump slightly more than the average Republican in Senate, but it’s never followed up by action. Collins votes with Trump 79 percent of the time. She’s only a “swing” vote in the sense that all of her other colleagues are so partisan that they almost never break ranks.

Collins shouldn’t need to be bribed, threatened or whatever-ed to not confirm a man whose views are antithetical to the pro-choice movement and who likely committed perjury during his Senate hearings. For that reason, hopefully Maine voters continue to raise money for a new candidate, regardless of Collins’s vote, so that they can be represented by a better lawmaker moving forward.

Susan Collins like Lisa Murkowski is bought and paid for by her corporate masters. Susan Collins is a disgrace to the state of Maine.
