North Carolina GOP: Public Hanging For Abortionists

There’s something about a public hanging that strikes me as very oh, I don’t know, “cruel and unusual” and offensive to every last bit of human decency. Not so for North Carolina Republican Larry Pittman. In fact, Pittman thinks bringing back public hangings would be a great deterrent for “abortionists, rapists, and kidnappers.”

Pittman expressed this view in an email to every member of the North Carolina General Assembly. From Pittman’s email: “We need to make the death penalty a real deterrent again by actually carrying it out. Every appeal that can be made should have to be made at one time, not in a serial manner,” Pittman wrote in the email. “If murderers (and I would include abortionists, rapists, and kidnappers, as well) are actually executed, it will at least have the deterrent effect upon them. For my money, we should go back to public hangings, which would be more of a deterrent to others, as well.”

Criminalizing abortion is of course the very goal of the right, so it is no surprise to hear that a conservative lawmaker would view abortion providers as criminals. What is more telling is that Pittman’s position is quickly becoming the “center” for the right on the abortion issue. Last year alone Republicans in Nebraska, Iowa and South Carolina all pushed legislation that would essentially criminalize abortion and 2012 promises even more such measures.

And the harder to the right Republicans go on the abortion issue, the more violent their rhetoric. The more violent their rhetoric the more violent their actions. To call Pittman lumping abortion providers in with murderers and rapists as those who are first in line for a public hanging irresponsible would be generous.

Health care providers are not criminals, and it’s time conservatives get a grip and stop trying to treat them as such.

Definitely, Elsa. And next they'd start burning women who'd had an abortion, if they only could...

The thing that is ridiculous is-- most of the stuff I read on this web site.. Like that huge apparatus inserted in women who want an abortion... Get real... A sonogram is suggested. Now-- 'a hanging'. Are you kidding me.. And you guppies drink the cool-aid and get all freaked out over this silly stuff.. Does anyone have a brain.. Hello ..

I lived in North Carolina for several years, and believe me, wingnuts like this thrive their. They like to think of themselves as modern and progressive and friendly, Maybe in Asheville, or isolated neighborhoods around charlotte and Raleigh, but not anywhere else. This jerk Pittman is one of their heros. Women are second class citizens, as are anyone else who isn't a white redneck with a pick up truck. You think being gay is tough in Texas or Nebraska, give it a go in NC.
Driving around with a rebel flag on your roof or license plate is acceptable behavior. Advocating womens rights and equality will get your teeth kicked in.

The GOP has made this country a shadow of it's former self. Bush made us the laughing stock of the world and after he deregulated the banks and created the housing bubble and subsequent crash that sent economies around the world into a recession.

Every other day someone from the GOP makes absurd statements which reflects their beliefs no matter how hard they try to retract or explain what they've said. Why we're at, in addition to hanging people, we could bring back the Iron Maiden and other torture devices. Maybe we can even start burning "witches" at the stake.

The GOP is turning into the American Taliban - their regressive views on social issues are not that far apart................

VOTE FOR THE GOP, and help spread more hate. We get what we deserve, and if we let more and more of these hate mongers get into office we can all kiss what's left of our freedom, goodbye.

Perhaps it's the brain-dead hate-filled ignorant bigots and bible-beating bunko artists who should be publicly hung -- or, at the very least, quarantined from society.
