North Korea: Trump’s Boasts Vs. the Actual Agreement

After President Donald Trump wrapped up his summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, he called the deal they reached “pretty comprehensive” and promised “both sides are going to be impressed with the result.”

At that point, it was easy for Trump to boast hyperbolically about his touted accomplishments because the media had yet to see the specifics of the agreement Trump and Kim signed. Now that the deal has been made public, the world is collectively asking, “Wait, is that it?”

Basically, Kim said that North Korea would move toward denuclearization, a sentiment that mirrored the one in agreement he already signed with South Korea a couple months ago. However, the document did not establish any sort of timeline, benchmarks or checks that would ensure denuclearization actually occurs. In other words, Trump didn’t get anything more than the vague commitment Kim has offered previously.

The real concession actually came on Trump’s part when he told Kim he’d end the U.S. and South Korea’s joint military exercises that North Korea hates. It subsequently came out that South Korea was given no prior warning that the U.S. was willing to sacrifice that particular partnership. Whoops!

Andrei Lankov, director of Korea Risk Group, a watchdog of North Korea, said, “We expected [the meeting] would be a flop, but it’s floppier than we expected. The declaration is pretty much meaningless. The Americans could have extracted serious concessions, but it was not done. The North Koreans will be emboldened and the U.S. got nothing.”

For all of his bluster about being a great deal maker, it’s interesting how Trump came away with… well, almost nothing. Perhaps if he hadn’t proudly decided not to prepare much for the summit, he could have come away with something better?

Not only did Kim get a photo op that helped legitimatize him on the world stage, but he also got the unexpected bonus of having the U.S. president fawn over him. In a post-summit press conference he said Kim has a “great personality” and is “funny… very smart… very talented,” not to mention a man who “loves his people [and] his country.”

When reporters pointed out that Kim is known for abusing and starving his own people, Trump made excuses on Kim’s behalf. But what else would you expect from a president who adores the world’s dictators?

Former Republican Congressman David Jolly can’t believe how warmly Trump spoke of a man with a reputation as terrible as Kim’s, saying that no other president has or would do that. Unfortunately, most other conservatives are applauding Trump’s supposed achievement in a partisan effort to spin it in a win. Now This News has a remarkable montage video showcasing the different ways Fox News covered Obama and Trump’s respective relationships with North Korea.

Although Trump says he expects Kim to start the denuclearization process that the dictator made no firm commitments about real quickly, he also is already giving himself an out in the event that nothing significant transpires. Trump acknowledged to the press, “I may stand before you in six months and say, ‘Hey, I was wrong.’ I don’t know that I’ll ever admit that, but I’ll find some kind of an excuse.”

Right. Trump is attempting to take his victory lap now before he inevitably has to rely on excuses to explain why the meaningless document he signed has resulted in nothing. Let’s get that Nobel prize chant going again!

He got NOTHING from them, gave N Korea everything they need, and only created a tacky commercial video and enough theater to hope he gets the Nobel.

Well two wrongs don't make a right, Susanne R. Just because the Republicans are taking more money from Wall Street, banks, and big pharma, doesn't excuse the Democrats. Nancy Pelosi is worth 100 million dollars, and refuses to support Medicare for all. How do you expect to beat this crook Trump in 2020, when the Democrats are refusing to support progressive policies that we desperately need, like Medicare for all, free colleges, a $15.00 an hour Minimum wage, marijuana legalization, their dishonestly taking millions from banks, Wall Street and corporations, and their refusing to allow Bernie Sanders to lead them? Voters need something to vote for, and the Democrats are giving them nothing to vote for.

Brian: Don't you have an audition with the Harmonicats coming up soon? Why don't you spend your time practicing instead of annoying people who are trying to ignore you? BTW, I visited open.secrets.org and learned that the Republicans are by far the bigger beneficiaries of large donations from the sources you mentioned.

As for taking my meds, the world-famous Dr. Brian hasn't got back to me with a diagnosis of my illness, so I don't know what to take. Personally, I think he could use a large suppository to cure what ails him.

Susanne R Your defense of the obvious corruption of the Democrats shtick is getting old. Even a 12 year old kid can go to opensecrets.org and see that the Democrats have taken millions from Wall Street, big pharma, banks, and corporations, and are as corrupt as the Republicans. This matters, because no one will vote for them, and they will continue to lose elections. Now take your meds.

The corporate fake Democrats first criticized Trump for his tough fire and fury talk, and now they say he was too soft on Korea, and didn't get concessions. The truth is they are so blinded by their hatred for Trump, that they can't give him credit when he does something right. In 2015 North Korea offered Obama a deal to dismantle their nuclear arsenal, in exchange for ending the war games off their coast. Obama said no, so the corporate fake Democrats should be bashing the sellout liar Obama, and not Trump.
