Pelosi Waves Off Impeachment, But Is It The Right Call?

Liberals who have been crossing their fingers for a presidential impeachment may want to chill their expectations. That’s not because of anything Donald Trump has or has not done, but because Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi doesn’t think it’s worth pursuing.

“I’m not for impeachment,” Pelosi told the Washington Post this week. “Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path because it divides the country.”

That’s not to say other Democrats won’t try to lead the charge on impeachment in her stead, but it will certainly be harder for legislators to pull that off without the help of Congress’s foremost Democratic leader.

Even if you’d like to see Trump exit the White House sooner than later, Pelosi’s perspective should be understandable. To make impeachment a reality, Democrats are going to need a substantial number of Republican lawmakers to vote against the president; given how few of them have flinched in the face of all that Trump has thrown out there, that just doesn’t seem likely.

From a strategic standpoint, Pelosi and other Democratic Party leaders don’t want to blow the 2020 election by providing Trump with reason to play the victim of an “unfair witch-hunt.” Wanting a smoking gun or particularly damning report from Robert Mueller before giving real consideration to impeachment proceedings makes sense.

With all that acknowledged, I still reckon it’d be a mistake to be as closed off Pelosi appears to be. Her additional comment that Trump’s “just not worth it” seems almost tone deaf.

If Trump’s not worthy of impeachment, who is, then? He’s a known scammer who regularly oversteps the bounds of his office and shows contempt for the Constitution. Most signs point to collusion with Russia, but the Republicans repeatedly move the goalposts on what defines collusion (or whether collusion is even a crime in the first place) to ensure that no amount of evidence will be sufficient.

While it absolutely would be preferable to have the backing of the overwhelming majority of the country before moving ahead with impeachment, the truth is that a solid 30 to 40 percent of voters will never turn on Trump no matter what. (We can say that confidently since they’ve admitted as much in polls.)

With that in mind, Democrats cannot be afraid of pursuing justice if the case in front of them is clear just because MAGA hat-wearers refuse to see the light. Rest assured that Republicans would still push forward with impeachment if a Democratic figure were implicated in a fraction of Trump’s misdeeds – hypocrisy is thy brand.

Impeachment could alienate certain moderates or make a 2020 blue wave seem like less of a slam dunk, but if we’re begging members of the GOP to put country ahead of party, we’ve got to expect Pelosi and the Democrats to do the same.

Hopefully, if it becomes clear that impeachment is appropriate and necessary for the good of the country, Democrats will ignore the potential partisan losses associated with the move and understand it’s part of a more important plan to save democracy.

As far as Nancy goes, during trumps 1st year their wasn't enough gathered evidence to impeach him, and the house hadn't yet changed hands to become majority dem, but there has been a group focused entirely on impeaching trump and they do have a long list of 'crimes' he has never been convicted of, and some he has . A lot of it is sexual accusations, stealing money from charities he set up to use for his own purposes, that fake collage, and many things I've never heard the terms of before.
This hold back do it in small increments thing is a red flag that tells you the super wealthy are promoting it to protect the status quo that primarily benefits them. If any of you are interested there is a millionaire named Nick Hanour who wrote a book called 'Pitchfork Economics' who spilled the beans on how the rich stay rich and thriving while convincing the poor and not thriving that they TOO are doing fine because the economy is doing great for the the rich. Freedom and liberty mean different things to wealthy people. They are not so much greedy as they are often clueless about our needs, and just plain stupid.

If "people " are getting tired of me, brian can you even begin to imagine what they feel about your constant and repetitious order to like everyone you say to and name call if they don't ?
People like me are the reason YOU get pushback and I have not said one bad thing ABOUT Mr. Sanders except that I don't agree with "free" college and perhaps he won't BE the Democratic nominee.
trump IS a crook, a liar and a slimeball and I would dislike hime regardless of what he tried to do for a living.
Just keep it up brian but try to have a good day by cleaning up YOUR backyard !!

Rhoberta E Grow up. Corporations own both corrupt parties and our media. IIlhan Omar, AOC and most progressives like Noam Chomsky, Cornell West, Jimmy Dore, Kyle Kylinski and many others agree with me 100%. People are getting tired of your constant nonsense and phony one sided only this crook Trump is corrupt argument. People like you are the reason why we desperately need Bernie Sanders to lead this country.

The problem here is that people like Mary B, David C and Gene J, don't want to admit that the Democrats are as corrupt as the Republicans. Most of the Democrats are in lockstep with pro AIPAC Republican Israel can do no wrong policies even though Israel illegally occupies half the West Bank, illegally blockades Gaza, and recently murdered 173 Palestinians with sniper fire. Israel was created by stealing the land of the Palestinians, and murdering those who refused to leave. It is a Colonial apartheid regime, that gives the Palestinians no rights, yet most Democrats side with the Republicans and support this murderous regime, Israel. In addition most Democrats including Nancy Pelosi refuse to support Medicare for all, and the Green New Deal, and take as much or more from Wall Street and corporations according to opensecrets.org. And Mary B tells me I should leave this site. The only people who need this site are liars like David C, Mary B, Gene J, and others who defend the corruption of the Democrats who caused this crook Trump to win. With younger Democrats like AOC, Rashida Talib, IIhan Omar, and others, these phony corporate fake Democrats will find it harder to defend their lies. People are waking up to the lies of the Democrats who have become as corrupt as the Republicans. This is why Bernie Sanders is unstoppable.

brian f the BOT VOTED FOR Ms. Clinton in 2016.
Now, according to brian, if you follow his cut and paste mantra "you need mental health help" Hmmmm.
Not everyone will agree with or even like some candidates running for the Democratic Party and different states and different age groups will ALSO have different priorities. That's OK because none of you are clones. (except maybe brian)
brian I'm sure there is a mental health crisis hot line in NC. Keep it handy.

Mary B Bernie Sanders doesn't take corporate money unlike most of the other corrupt corporate establishment sellout Democrats, and he doesn't need the Democrats money. I never said that you or other members here don't realize the Democrats are corrupt also. What I disagree with is when I criticize other Democrats like Nancy Pelosi, for refusing to support Medicare for all and the Green New Deal, and taking millions from corporations and Wall Street according to opensecrets.org, apparently you and others here get upset. If you're tired of hearing it, go to another site. I'm not going to be silent while 45,000 people die because we are the only country that has this horrible oppressive healthcare system, because corrupt politicians like Nancy Pelosi and many other Democrats refuse to support Medicare for all. Trump is a crook and a liar but so are the Democrats who caused him to be elected. Now please leave this site if it offends you that I keep repeating this critism of corrupt Democrats, because it will not stop until they end their corruption.

David C I don't understand why you are on this site either. What do you contribute? I've stated many times that we desperately need to replace this crook Trump with an honest progressive like Bernie Sanders. You have bad mouthed both Bernie Sanders and Tulsi Gabbard, who take no corporate money and support progressive policies that we desperately need in this country like Medicare for all, the Green New Deal, a $15.00 minimum wage, free colleges, an end to regime change wars, marijuana legalization, and prison reform. Clearly you are not a real progressive who supports Bernie Sanders. We don't need centrist Democrats on this site. We need honest progressives who support Medicare for all, free colleges and other progressive issues that we desperately need in this country. Please join Mary B, and leave this site, because you have nothing to contribute to this site.
