Pence Recommits Himself to Ending Abortion – Be On Alert

Those who value the reproductive rights of women would be wise to keep their eyes on Vice President Mike Pence and start mounting a counter-offense. This week, Pence recommitted himself to ending abortion in the United States, and it’s not all that unfeasible for it to happen.

“I know in my heart of hearts this will be the generation that restores life in America,” Pence said at an anti-choice luncheon. “I truly do believe, if all of us do all that we can, that we will once again, in our time, restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law.”

Those aren’t the kinds of words you want to hear from a man who is a heartbeat – or impeachment, as looks increasingly likely – away from being the president. Women fought for the right to have autonomy over their bodies, yet Pence is prepared to rip all that away and force women to carry unwanted and possibly unviable pregnancies to term.

It’s a position Pence has made clear since joining the Trump campaign trail nearly a year and a half ago. “I’m pro-life and I don’t apologize for it,” Pence said. “We’ll see Roe vs. Wade consigned to the ash heap of history where it belongs.”

The scary thing is that Pence could very well pull off this feat. While legislators can and do try to whittle away at abortion rights by imposing unnecessary laws just to make it impractical for women to obtain abortions, they can’t really end abortion without the cooperation of the Supreme Court.

As it stands, the Supreme Court is potentially just one new conservative judge away from having the justices necessary to overturn Roe vs. Wade. With rumors of declining health and retirement among the aging justices currently on the bench, the odds are good that the current administration will get to make such an appointment.

Worse yet, Pence does not need to ascend to the rank of presidency for such a scenario to play out. At the same luncheon, Pence referred to Trump as “the most pro-life president in all of history,” suggesting that he’s confident that his boss is committed to appointing anti-choice justices. Trump himself pledged to exclusively appoint “pro-life” judges.

Trump’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch would support that notion. Although Gorsuch hasn’t ruled directly on an abortion case to definitively ascertain his position, anti-abortion activists are pretty sure from his other opinions that he’d be a reliable vote in the crusade to eliminate women’s reproductive choices.

For those of us who do not wish to see Pence’s crusade succeed – in this generation or any other – our best move is to ensure liberals regain a majority in the Senate to prevent the confirmation of anti-abortion justices. Republicans showed Democrats how to play hardball when a Supreme Court seat is on the line, and for the sake of women’s rights, we need to put ourselves in a position to play hardball right back.

The only thing Pence should be ending is his Vice Presidency --and any future career in politics as well. His time would be better spent trying to help the struggling mothers of children who were unplanned by fighting for their health care, SNAP benefits, housing, day care, etc. Why is he more concerned about the unborn than he is about existing children who were born into poverty and don't have enough food, warm clothing, medical care, etc.? If Jesus really did speak to Pence, I believe He'd say, "Stop being such a dope! Why are you playing Charlie McCarthy to Trump's Edgar Bergen?" (No offense intended to the memory of Edgar Bergen or HIS dummy, Charlie McCarthy.) If Pence were truly interested in "saving" unborn children, his interest would extend long after birth. It sounds as though he's more interested in controlling women --which is odd, considering that his wife keeps him on such a short leash.

Pence believes that Jesus talks directly to him. I wonder if he could ask "Jesus" to speak a bit more publicly so the rest of us know what he's saying. It sounds more like "Satan'" is whispering in Pence's ear.

I was thinking about this issue today. How one little man, small-minded with big ambitions, has decided to dub himself as an "ABORTION WARRIOR" and cause deliberate damage to women all across the nation--simply because HE thinks that HE is the ONLY moral authority in the country. The HUBRIS/ARROGANCE of it is disgusting!

Somebody needs to remind Pence that his bible does not equate abortion with murder. If he truly wants to stop abortion, he needs to add comprehensive sex education to all school curriculums. That would go a lot farther than forcing a female of any age to carry a pregnancy to term when his glorious GOP won't provide health care or prenatal care.

Pence and co-conspirators in denying abortion for any reason is being extreme chauvinism along with his extreme Christianity foibles. Also they are being amorally responsible for violence and death of women as always since time began women have had necessary reasons for ending a pregnancy, and that will never change which is why when politicians in America became less patriarchal and less bigoted legal abortion allowed. America must not allow one Christian extremist VPOTUS and one pretend Christian POTUS regress America on this matter.

There is no limit to the harm to others that can be committed as long as you insist it is God's will. Pence is such a jerk.
