Petition to End Closure of UK Hospital Delivered to Prime Minister

A Care2 petition started by a local councillor seeking to save Leek Moorlands Hospital from closure gathered over 45,000 signatures and was delivered to the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street on February 28, 2018. Earlier in the day, 120 people from Staffordshire filled a committee room at Parliament to hear from MPs, campaigners and the head of the local NHS Sustainability and Transformation Plan. People were brought to tears hearing of the devastating impact of the loss of hospital beds and cuts to care services.

Beth Granter, Head of UK Campaigns at Care2, said the petition has surfaced due to government underfunding of the National Health Service. “Hospitals are closing and services are being lost all over the country,” Granter said. “The NHS is in crisis.”

Moorlands Democratic Alliance Councillor Pamela Wood started the Care2 petition to save Leek Moorlands Hospital and delivered the signatures to the local council last year. She hoped to escalate her campaign by bringing it to Members of Parliament and the Prime Minister on February 28.

“I am a district councillor for the area, and before retiring I spent the last 12 years of my career working at the hospital as a nurse manager (sister),” Wood writes on her Care2 petition. “So I know just how important the hospital is to the community.”
