Republicans Still Think the Real Scandal Is Clinton’s Emails

It’s become a joke among liberals that no matter how mired in scandal President Donald Trump’s administrations gets, conservatives’ go-to response is “But her emails.” Sadly, this quip is looking less like a joke and more like reality: The GOP-led House Oversight Committee is still actively seeking to press criminal charges over Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server.

On Thursday, the leader of the Oversight Committee, Representative Jason Chaffetz, sent a formal letter to the newly appointed Attorney General Jeff Sessions requesting that Bryan Pagliano, the IT guy who helped Clinton set up her server, either face criminal charges or appear before a grand jury.

“Just because there was a political election doesn’t mean it goes away,” said Chaffetz, a Republican representing Utah’s 3rd district.

Though it’s true that Pagliano ignored Congressional subpoenas to answer the House Oversight Committee’s questions, the FBI twice cleared Clinton of having criminal intent by setting up a private server. Particularly once Clinton lost the election, there’s really no pressing need to reopen an investigation that’s proved fruitless multiple times in the past.

That’s especially relevant given everything else that’s going on in the world of political scandal. When National Security Advisor Michael Flynn was forced to resign after the press discovered he had discussed dropping Russian sanctions with Russian diplomats prior to the election – something he previously lied to the American public about – Chaffetz declined to conduct an investigation of his own, saying, “It’s taking care of itself.”

Actually, these kinds of things don’t take care of themselves. We have bodies like the House Oversight Committee in place as an intentional check on power when the Executive Branch is out of line. When Chaffetz declines to use his position to do just that because the president shares the same party affiliation at him, those checks and balances are squandered.

Chaffetz might not want to help connect the dots, but journalists and the American public are starting to do it without his help. Following the Flynn leak, there are plenty of reasons to question Trump and his team’s ties to Russia, yet Chaffetz is deliberately choosing not to do that – just as he’s deliberately chosen not to look into Trump’s potential business conflicts.

If he’s going to represent the country as an oversight chair, he can’t be concerned with the party of the person he’s investigating. Chaffetz has claimed he doesn’t want to lead a “fishing expedition” against Trump, but he had no problem doing precisely that against his political opponent Clinton for the past few years.

It doesn’t get much more partisan than that. It’s no wonder that Chaffetz’s own constituents jeered him and told him to “Do your job!” at a recent town hall meeting.

Chaffetz might think another email investigation is a great distraction from the turmoil currently transpiring in the White House, but Americans lose if we fail to keep our sitting elected officials in check. Be sure to tell Chaffetz we want his focus on Russia’s involvement with American politics rather than Clinton’s emails by signing this Care2 petition.

I care a while lot more about Clinton's emails than Trump's taxes! The emails actually belong to we the people!

"Morals" may be different to different people: that does not make them right or wise. People ignore natural law to their own detriment and is why there is so much unnecessary grief and suffering in the world. Defending survival of the fittest rather than natural law which puts care and respect for life first would make all the difference in the world. Imagine if people made decisions from natural law which at its core is to do no harm, not from man-made self-serving law. We all know what harms us and if it harms us than it harms others. Life would be better and we could live our lives learning, exploring and creating in harmony with Earth. It is in our power of choice to do so and to say that humanity can't do it takes away our ability to be better and keeps humanity stuck in endless wars and produces leaders like Trump who justifies his self-serving, harmful behaviour just as Obama did before him.

Darlene B--You believe what you want, but Morals do change, attitudes change, life changes.. Morals are different in different societies, different cultures. In war-time Morals do a complete shift where the more people you kill or maim on the other side, the more heroic you are perceived to be. Espionage and treason are much more evil than killing, rape or infanticide.. What helps the war is good and everything else is either bad or doesn't matter. When war is over, we go back to whatever our society/religion say's is good or bad. Society and peoples moral values completely change when war is involved and over time.

Human moral codes change because people want to get around what is right when we all know what is the difference between right and wrong. That is why we get into trouble because humans try to bend the truth for personal agendas rather than acknowledge we are all one and interconnected. If people understand this then when people are hurt in other Countries we know that we are not separated from that and speak out against these wrongs. Natural law is not the survival of the fittest - that is Darwinian THEORY. What survives and thrives is that which is cared and respected and humans are the caretakers of Planet Earth. That is again why our Planet is in trouble because we continually try to justify bad behaviour and then cry when things go wrong rather than acknowledge that when we do NOT care about life, grief and suffering is ALWAYS the result. We can choose to live with dignity and respect or say that this impossible so let's fight for ourselves and the rest of the world who cares. Eventually, that catches up to you if that is how you choose to live, someone will abuse you or lie to you. I choose to live within natural law and will continue to speak up that humans always can choose better that would result in a healthy world where people cooperate and create a fabulous beautiful existence in harmony with Planet Earth. We can do it but we have to create together honouring life and knowing we are sacred spiritual beings here on Earth to live and grow. Our religious, poli

@Brian F---Wikileaks speaks the truth! So you trust the authenticity of an alleged Rapist holed up in an Embassy because he does not have the balls to face his Swedish accusers, speaks volumes! The United States of America has officially linked Wikileaks to Russia. These TRUTHS are anonymous and a great source for people who don't require accuracy and enjoy finding TRUTHS written on Bathroom Walls... Anyone can write in anonymously with accusations which happens to news organizations all the time, and they protect their sources, BUT, they also follow up finding if these stories are true or just a vendetta against someone. They have to prove their anonymous source stories..Wikileaks does NOT..

OK--Darlene--You said, "With Trump, what you see is what you get." Darlene, grown up people know that harming others and destroying their worlds rarely comes back to the destroyers. If it actually did, that would be all that is necessary to prevent these horrible things from continually happening wouldn't it. And grown up people also know that Morality and Values change over time, as with anything else. Human Moral codes vary a great deal between different cultures and subcultures. Furthermore, morals sometimes change rapidly with individuals and within societies. You, I, and everybody else lead the lives we do today, because of past horrible immoral actions and devious practices, which is considered abhorrent and illegal today, whether you want to believe it or not. So do not pine and whine over something that NEVER was, trying to get back to what you believe was better, because it was NEVER BETTER! Yes we must try and make a better world for everyone, but it is not going to be done by droning on about some mystery Moral compass, and whatever the hell you think Natural Law is. Natural Law is "SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST."

Making a blanket policy to block all people from 7 Countries is harming the people of these Countries when only a small portion of people from these Countries are harming others. Developing a policy to identify people that harm others rather than making it about race and religion is a much more just and fair procedure. Trump is being racist by not differentiating between those that are radical and will use violence and people that only want to live in peace. Trump is making a bad situation worse by using the military rather than standing for what a peaceful and just society is all about, fighting fire with fire, hatred with hatred. We need wise leaders that uphold strong principles to turn this situation around and who truly care about humanity and life rather than be interested in their own personal power agendas. Politics, religion and corporations are not working in the best interests of Planet Earth and until that happens people will continue to be harmed for self-serving reasons. We have to find the strength in cooperation and the balance between the individual and the community. Until then people are suffering unnecessarily and we are destroying the very Planet that gives us life.
