Romney’s Top Six ‘I Know I Am But So Are You’ Moments

Written by Annie-Rose Strasser

Mitt Romney has a way of deflecting criticism that is uniquely his. Where most politicians tend to pivot to another topic if they don’t like what someone is accusing them of, Romney takes an I’m-rubber-you’re-glue approach to attacks, accepting them as true but then simultaneously making the same accusation of his opponent.

Just today, the Romney campaign has started reflecting back allegations of outsourcing by saying that, in fact, President Obama was the one who really outsourced jobs. This is just the latest maneuver of the sort. Here are the top six times that Romney has had a “I Know I Am But So Are You” moment:

1. Mitt Romney “offshores” jobs, but Obama outsources. When the Washington Post ran a story depicting how Mitt Romney sent jobs overseas during his time at Bain Capital, the Romney campaign rushed to specify that he had “offshored” jobs, not “outsourced” them. But now, the campaign is saying that it was in fact Obama who outsourced jobs, since the Recovery Act funded US-based renewable energy projects by companies that also did work overseas. Those claims have been debunked previously as patently untrue.

2. Romneycare’s individual mandate is constitutional, but Obamacare’s isn’t. Mitt Romney’s spokespeople have argued that the individual mandate is an “unconstitutional penalty.” Romney called it a constitutional tax. But whatever it’s called, he wants to be clear that Obama is raising taxes and Romney, when he passed a nearly identical bill in Massachusetts, was not. (He did, however, briefly say it was a tax then too)

3. Mitt Romney got two degrees from Harvard, but Obama “spent too much time” there. Mitt Romney got two degrees — a JD and MBA — at Harvard; President Obama only received his JD. But Romney told his audience at a rally earlier this year that Obama “spent too much time at Harvard.” This argument tries to frame Obama as the out-of-touch elite, despite the fact that Romney is the millionaire son of a governor.

4. Romney wants to gut Medicare, but says Obama is responsible for massive Medicare cuts. Romney has said that Obama wants to “end Medicare as we know it.” But Romney’s budget proposal drastically reduced federal funding and will require seniors to purchase insurance using “premium support” vouchers.

5. Romney says he shouldn’t be held accountable for inheriting a recession in Massachusetts, but holds Obama accountable for 2009 job loses. In 2006, when job creation was incredibly slow in Massachusetts under a Romney governorship, he asked constituents to understand how hard it is to pull a state out of a deep recession. But the Romney campaign still blames Obama for job loses that occurred in the early days of his administration.

6. Mitt Romney’s big houses are a sign of success, John Kerry’s big house shows he’s rich and out of touch. In 2004, when Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) was the Democratic candidate for President, Romney went on the attack, joking that he didn’t know why Kerry would want to be president since “he would have to move into a smaller house.

Keep people scared and broke and you can control them completely. It worked for Reagan, it worked for both Bushes and it appears to be working for Romney and Ryan. Brainwashing involves de-humanizing people, repeating the same line over, and over, and has worked wonderfully ever since Karl Rove came up with the Willie Horton ads against Dukakis. Why would they change direction now? After all, the Koch Brothers and their ilk are donating the billions the Republicans need to spread their fear and misinformation, the Republicans know how well it works, so is anybody surprised that they are continuing along their so well tried and trusted line? The sad part is that so many of the 99% are so eager to gulp the Kool Aid.

Gerry, I am so sorry. I thought the UK was saner than us.

Should Romney win, the best possible outcome would be the Democrats taking over the House and Air Force Ona and Two being involved in a supersonic crash at 30,000" with the crew escaping with parachutes.

Just kidding. The best result would be the Democrats winning everything and ditching the filibuster rule.

Reply to Diana R.: Poor people vote Republican because they are ill informed. Ever notice how the poorer a person is, the more religious that person is. They have become so used to listening to church sermons that are focused on instilling fear into their hearts to keep them subjugated so they would keep on giving their tithes. The republican machine uses the same tactic to keep their base misinformed so they do not see that they are actually being used to promote the republican agenda--exercise control over the people to whatever extent, to maximize financial profit no matter at what cost. Once in a while, they spout some biblical verses (do not kill fetuses, but kill criminals even if they may not be truly guilty) to keep the poor pious people in their place. Oh, and yeah, throw them ignorant people a bone from time to time...let them carry guns to protect themselves from the bogeyman.

Track down one of your child hood books of fairy tales and read 'The Emperor's New Clothes'. Double speak appears to be the norm in politics now. We have never been so close to George Orwell's '1984' vision as we are now. Its time for plain speaking, transparency and honesty. And the only people who have that freedom (which needs fierce protection) are the people. So make your voice heard. The Republicans are amoral and unethical and have lost the plot in their attempt to gain power. Look back on your past presidents and compare their leadership with those of today. America is run by big business driven by the profit motive. It started with the Mafia, and now there is a legitimised corrupt Mafia called Big Business who can control and influence politics in a variety of ways. Yet there are still good men and women who one hopes will prevail in this toxic political and business world.

This is going to be a L--O--N--G silly season. Unlike most years , our country and the world is at a critical tipping point and the ballots cast this time round will be setting a course that will far outlast the tenure of those elected.

Will this country and the world for that matter be an enduring property of the people or a trophy on somebody's mantel?

@Steve R. Here the totality in several of those issues have been closely examined, and somewhere in the food chain for source to the expressions flowing from your fingertips at least a little gilding of the Lilly has occurred.

It would be appreciated if defenders of the faith on both sides of the isle would refrain from such puffery, and try spending a little quality time with Google to research the actual substance and context.

This goes for parrots both LEFT and RIGHT..

He is a moron, idiot, and any other words that can be used to describe someone who lacks common sense and intelligence. Education does NOT always make one smart, and he is the poster child for that.

I will just address one of the items - outsourcing.

Obama appointed Jeff Immelt - CEO of General Electric, as head of his "Council On Jobs And Competitiveness".

The same Jeff Immelt than moved GE's entire X-Ray division to China.

Then there are those "shovel ready" bridge building jobs that went to China, LED manufacturing jobs funded by the stimulus that went to China, wind turbines funded by stimulus funds that were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, and that Fisker Automotive loan to build alternative energy cars in FINLAND???

Obama is a bare faced liar - he is just as guilty of outsourcing as anyone else, including Romney!

And Romney should simply be quoting specific examples of Obama's outsourcing in his rebuttal of Obama's BS accusations!
